GUIDELINES

AYURVEDIC TOURIST HEALTH RESORTS / CENTRES AND AYURVEDIC TOURIST


HEALTH RESORTS / AYURVEDIC HEALTH CENTRES IN TOURIST HOTELS / GUEST
HOUSES REGISTRATION

SRI LANKA TOURISM DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY

Definition

A place where Indigenous medicines, treatments & services are offered or given to visitors to heal their mind
& body.

01. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

1. LOCATION 1.1 The Ayurvedic Tourist Health Resort /Centre and Ayurvedic Tourist Health

2. BUILDING 2.1 The building should be suitably designed for the application of Ayurvedic
medicine / treatment. It should be geared for the operation of an Ayurvedic
Tourist Health Resort / Ayurvedic Tourist Health Centre (in a Tourist Hotel /
Guest House or otherwise)

3. COMPOUND 3.1 The compound & garden should be well laid and maintained in a manner
befitting an Ayurvedic Tourist Health Resort/ Ayurvedic Tourist Health Centre in
a Tourist Hotel / Guest House.

4. PARKING 4.1 There should be adequate parking space for vehicles with adequate security.

5. INFORMATION 5.1 Facilities should be made available to provide detailed information on Ayurvedic
Services /Treatment offered to guests.

6. CONSULTATION 6.1 There should be consultation rooms and guest waiting area/rooms
ROOMS & GUEST with adequate space.
WAITING ROOM

6.2 Adequate, comfortable seating facilities should be provided for the physician
as well as for guests seeking treatment.

6.3. The area should be demarcated and should be adequately lit and ventilated.

6.4. It should be clean and well maintained.

7. MINIMUM FACILITIES &


EQUIPMENT

To qualify for an Ayurvedic Tourist Health Resort /Ayurvedic Tourist Health Centre in a Tourist Hotel / Guest
House, the following types of treatment should be provided:

7.1 PANCHAKARMA

7.1.1. POORVA KARMA ( Sneha & Sweda Karma )

Sheersha Abyanga Pinda & Waashpa Swedha
Shirodhara Agni & Niragna Swedha
Sarwangadhara

7.1.2. PRADHANA KARMA

Vamana Karma
Viredhana Karma
Nasya Karma

7.1.3. PASCHATH KARMA

Patya Ahara Viharana etc.

7.1.4. KSHUDRA KARMA

Gandusha
Kavalangraha

7.1.5. SHAMANA KARMA

Deepana
Paachana
Athapa
Sevana

7.2 The following equipment also should be made available.

7.2.1. Examination bed/s


7.2.2. Wooden beds for massage/ Shrodhara etc.
7.2.3 Caskets for steaming for steaming made out of quality wood (preferably Margosa)

8. TREATMENT
ROOMS 8.1 The treatment rooms should be located away from the public
areas and there should be adequate privacy .

8.2 Should have sufficient light and ventilation.

8.3 Adequate number of treatment rooms should be provided in relation to the


number of guest rooms or number of guests seeking treatment.
(1 treatment room for every 5 rooms or 1 Treatment room for 10 guests)

8.4 A minimum of 2 treatment rooms must be made available separately for male
and female guests)

9. AREA FOR RELAXATION


LOUNGE 9.1 Adequately equipped and furnished lounge/area for relaxation should
be available .

9.2 Adequate comfortable relaxing chairs should be available.

9.3 Should be quiet and free of noise.

10. MEDICINE
PREPARATION
ROOM 10.1 An area adequate in size should be available for the preparation of
medicine/ treatment.

10.2 Preparation of medicine should be done under the supervision of a qualified


Ayurvedic Physician registered with the Ayurvedic Medical Council.

10.3 Quality racks tables and other storing material to be provided.

10.4 A wash basin with running hot and cold water to be provided.

10.5 All drugs /medicines should be prepared according to the accepted standards
using permitted utensils.

10.6 Separate stores should be available to stock manufactured drugs and


raw materials.

10.6 Proper and adequate Heating, fermentation methods to be observed.

11. CASUAL TOILETS 11.1 At least 2 separate toilets for males / females should be provided.

11.2 It should have a W.C. unit with modern sanitation in good working order.

11.3 Should be provided with a wash basin, mirror, towel rail, clean towels, sanitary
bin with paper bags, soap, soap tray, toilet paper with a holder, and / or bidet
/hand bidet, Clean Hot/ Cold water.

11.4 Toilets should be adequately lit and ventilated.

11.5 Floor and walls upto 5’ should be of impervious material.

11.6 Toilets to have a minimum flor area of 35sq.ft are preferred.

11.7 Toilets to be well maintained and all fittings to be in good working order .

12. STAFF &


FACILITIES 12.1 There should be a Senior Supervisory Ayurvedic Physician as consultant
attached to the Ayurveda Health Resort.
/Ayurvedic Health Unit and the Senior Supervising physician / consultant should
have a degree /diploma from a recognized Institute by the University Grant
Commission of Sri Lanka and should have at least 5 years post qualified
experience.

Indigenous Doctor or a physician with 15 years experience after obtaining a


certificate from a Ayurvedic medical Council (param parika Vaidya Kramaya)

12.2 In addition to the Senior Supervisory Physician or Consultant an Ayurvedic


doctor with a degree /diploma on completion of the course of study and registered
with the Department of Ayurveda should be available on call 24 hours of the day.

12.3 Attendants both male and female with at least 6 months training and or practical
experience on Ayurveda to treat male and female respectively should be
available.

12.4 Adequate trained staff should be available preferably trained at the Dept of
Ayurveda or form an Institute approved by the
Department of Ayurveda or institute recognized by Department of Ayurveda

12.5 The physician or at least one member of the staff should be proficient in English
or any other relevant foreign language.

12.6 Separate and clean toilet with WC in working order should be available for the
use of the staff.

12.7 A staff Changing / Rest/Dinning rooms equipped with necessary furniture,


cutlery, and crockery should be made available.

12.8 Staff must be provided with uniforms.

13. CUISINE 13.1 The food should be prepared as prescribed by the physician ensuring high
standard of cleanliness.

14. BED ROOMS 14.1 a single bedroom should not be less than 120 sq.ft.

14.2 a double bedrooms should not be less than 140sq.ft.

14.3 E very bedroom should be fitted with clean and comfortable beds.

14.4 The size of a single bed should not be less than 3’x6’3’’

14.5 Every bedroom should be provided with good mattresses, clean mattress
covers, clean pillows, pillow cases and fresh linen should be provided.
14.6 Special care should be taken when laundering Ayurveda linen.

14.7 Blankets should be provided in guest houses where the average monthly
temperature falls below 65F or in Air-condition rooms.

14.8 Every bedroom should be pro vided with a cupboard with hangers, dressing
table, luggage stand, table chairs, bed side table and lamp waste paper basket,
carpets/rugs, flask or water carafe, mosquito net.

14.9 A call bell/ internal telephone or any other communication system should be
installed.

14.10 The walls, ceiling, wood work, furniture fittings should be clean and maintained
in a manner befitting a tourist guest house.

14.11 The floor should be clean at all times.

14.12 Doors and windows should be closable and fitted with a safe lock.

15.THE DINNING 15.1 The restaurant dinning area should be adequately lit and ventilated.

15.2 The restaurant (dinning area) if non air conditioned should have sufficient
electric fans. This does no t apply to establishments where there are adequate
ventilation or the average monthly temperature falls below 65F (where heating
systems o r room heaters should be available)

15.3 The floor area of the restaurant should be sufficiently large to allow easy
movement between the tables.

15.4 Suitable dining tables and suitable/comfortable dinning chairs should be


available.

15.5 The walls, ceiling, doors, floor, wood work and fittings, furnishings should be
maintained in good condition.

15.6 The floor should be clean at all times.

15.7 The décor should be of a high standard befitting an Ayurvedic tourist center and
conform to the type of specially cosine offered (if applicable)

15.8 Cutlery, crockery glassware and other table ware should be adequate , clean and
be of good quality.

15.9 At least 3 sets of good quality table linen and serviettes should b e provided.

15.10 Service staff in the dinning room should be adequate, and in clean uniform.

16. Kitchen 16.1 The kitchen should be suitably located for easy and quick service.

16.2 The kitchen should be sufficiently large to cater to number of covers according to
the type of cuisine offered.

16.3 There should be adequate provision for ventilation and efficient removal of hot
and air and odours.

16.4 Lighting should b e adequate and suitable for a tourist restaurant.

16.5 Kitchen floor should be of impervious material conducive to easy cleaning.

16.6 Kitchen walls to be conducive to easy cleaning preferably be of impervious


material upto 5ft.

16.7 Kitchen ceiling, doors, windows, window panes wood work should be very
clean and well maintained.

16.8 Kitchen area should be free of insects and rodents there should be fly screens for
all kitchen doors and windows where necessary.

16.9 Preferably a separate kitchen to prepare Ayurvedic Medicine /food.

16.10 Kitchen table tops should be of stainless steel o r similar material and be in
good condition.

16.11 Kitchen cupboards with mesh door should be provided.

16.12 Kitchen utensils should be clean and adequate and well maintained.

16.13 At least two sinks with running (hot and cold) water should be available.

16.14 Separate facilities for washing hands with soap and clean cloth or paper towels
should be provided at the entrance to the kitchen.

16.15 There should be a sufficient number of waster bins with bags and covers, which
should be clean and in good condition.

16.16 Cooking facilities /equipment should be sufficient to cater to the number of


covers and the type of cuisine offered.

16.17 Containers with lids to be made available e for spices etc.

16.18 The kitchen should be equipped with suitable gas, or electrical firewood /stoves
/cookers.

16.19 All drains and outlets should be covered and clean and lead to a sealed
masonry soakage pit.

17 General 17.1 Emergency medical facilities/ arrangements should be made available such as,
first aid ,transport arrangements, Stretcher, wheel chair
17.2 It is necessary that the approvals form following agencies be obtained on an
annual basis (items II to VIII does not apply to Tourist Hotels/ Guest Houses
who have obtained approvals covering the Ayurvedic Tourist Health
Resorts/Centres situated within the premises)

i. Department of Ayurveda.
ii. Annual Trade license from the Local Authority.
iii. Fire adequacy certificate from the Local Authority/Fire Brigade as
registered fire company.
iv. Water sampling report (Micro – biological) from the Water Board /ITI o
r any Registered Laboratory.
v. Insurance certificate covering public liability
vi. Environmental Protection License from the Local Authority (where
applicable )
vii. Medical Reports of all staff (certified by a Registered medical
practitioner)
viii. Coast Conservation Dept Clearance (where applicable)

17.3. Security arrangements should be adequate.

17.4 Left Luggage and safe Locker facilities to be provided.

17.5 Appropriate measures should be taken to prevent breeding grounds of


Mosquitoes

REGULATORY REQUIREMENT

Under the section 48 (4) of Tourism Act No 38 of 2005 all Tourist services shall be registered
with the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority.
It shall be an offence to provide any tourist services which has not been registered of Sri Lanka
Tourism Development Authority. According to the section 48 (10) and section 63 (2) of the said
Act any enterprise or tourist service with no proper registration and license will become a
punishable offence.
