G. Kiryakova*

Faculty of Economics, Trakia University – Stara Zagora, Bulgaria

ABSTRACT
The current study discusses the nature of distance education. It indicates the main characteristics
which distinguish distance from traditional education. The study also summarizes the advantages and
disadvantages of distance education. It discusses the new technologies by which this form of
education is implemented. The study also emphasizes Web-based education which is prevalent and
growing in popularity.

Key words: distance learning, information and communication technologies,
