French Opportunities for Students

Outside of School
Explore French-Language Program
Explore is an intensive language-immersion program that allows students to learn
French, discover another region of Canada and meet new people. Participants in
Explore receive funding that covers most of the expenses. Have an adventure and

YMCA Student Summer Work Program


The YMCA Summer Work Student Exchange is a unique national exchange program that
brings together youth from various communities across the country. Participating youth,
aged 16 and 17, have the opportunity to improve their second official language skills,
and gain important employment experience through a work placement while on their

CEEF (Canadian Education Exchange Foundation)


CEEF works in cooperation with the LDCSB. CEEF organizes reciprocal educational exchange
programs for elementary and secondary school students. The student exchanges are school
-based. There are two phases to every student exchange: a hosting period, and a visiting
period. A visiting student lives with your family and attends classes in your school in the
fall. To complete the exchange, you travel to the home country of your exchange partner,
live with his/her family and attend school in that country. Deadline: various depending on

ISE (International Student Exchange)

ISE works in cooperation with the LDCSB to offer Ontario students reciprocal, school-board approved
exchange programs with Europe and Quebec. ISE has the vision of developing language skills and
increasing cultural awareness among Ontario students by offering: Summer exchanges (Ages 13-17),
Elementary Exchanges (Gr 8), Secondary Exchanges (Grade 10 & 11) and Cultural Exchanges (Ages 13-
17). Exchange duration and destinations will vary depending on the program. Deadline: various

FNJA (National Ambassador Youth Forum)

The FNJA program allows bilingual students in Grades 10 & 11 from across Canada who are
enrolled in French programs, the opportunity to become ambassadors of the French
language in their schools following FNJA training. The training takes place in a different
Canadian city each year and provides 5 days of fun, interactive workshops and activities
centered on the significance of bilingualism. Most expenses are covered. Deadline April

Trois-Pistoles

French immersion and the town of Trois-Pistoles are made for each other. At the French
Immersion School, an integrated approach to learning is emphasized. All elements of the
program - the courses, the workshops, the homestay and the social and cultural activities -
reinforce one another and maximize opportunities for you to hear and speak French and to
enrich your cultural experience. There are a variety of programs for students (min. 18 yrs. old
- deadline June) and families (deadline July). Students can earn a full-year university credit

while at School
Cultural experiences

Many schools offer cultural experiences while studying French.


These experiences can be during class time or as field trips.
Some cultural events that have been offered by various schools
are French cooking classes, Fashion Shows, Cafés, Francofun
Days, French performers and Carnivals. Other schools may offer
field trips to French restaurants, French plays, and French
movies. Students may also have had opportunities to celebrate
French Canadian holidays such as, St Catharine’s Day, St Jean
Baptiste Day, and Franco-Ontarian Flag Day.

Some schools are able to offer trips to


French speaking locations. Some of these
trips have been to Montreal, Ottawa,
Quebec City, St Donat and France.

Career Opportunities
Teachers will often discuss career opportunities that require students to
have French as a Second Language. Some of these are Journalism,
Business, Customer Service, Airport Employee, Child and Youth Worker,
Social Work, Travel and Tourism, Public Relations, International
Relations, Social Justice, Advertising, Banking, Hospitality Industry,
Canadian Force, Telephone Operator, Chef, Pilot, to name a few.
Schools may even host a Career Day
for Grade 9 students.

DELF

The DELF or Diplôme D’Études en Langue Française is an internationally


recognized test of French proficiency. It is based on the Common European
Framework of Reference (CEFR), which defines language proficiency along six
global levels: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2. At each level, proficiency is measured
across four competencies: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Successful
candidates are awarded a diploma from the French Ministry of National Education
which is valid for life.

We are excited to be able to offer this experience to our Grade 12 French


Immersion students and possibly our Gr 12 Core French students, if numbers
allow.
