FORMULAE FOR CLUTCH DESIGN

1. 𝑪 = 𝒑𝒎𝒂𝒙 × 𝒓𝟐

2. The axial thrust,

𝑾 = 𝒑𝒎𝒂𝒙 × 𝝅 (𝒓𝟐𝟏 − 𝒓𝟐𝟐 )……For Uniform Pressure Theory

3. The axial thrust ( W ),

𝑾 = 𝟐𝝅𝑪(𝒓𝟏 − 𝒓𝟐 ) = 𝟐𝝅 (𝒑𝒎𝒂𝒙 × 𝒓𝟐 ) × (𝒓𝟏 − 𝒓𝟐 ) …For Uniform wear theory

4. Torque transmitted 𝑻 = 𝒏 𝝁 𝑾 𝑹 …….For Plate Clutch

4. The area of the friction faces, (When R & b known)

A = 2π R.b

R = Mean radius of the friction lining, and

b = Face width of the friction lining = R/4 (Usually)

5. The face width (or radial width) of the plate, 𝒃 = 𝒓𝟏 − 𝒓𝟐

6. For uniform wear, mean radius of the clutch plate,
