Dragi mladi prijatelji!

Još sam pod dojmom veličanstvenog susreta hrvatske

katoličke mladeži koji je održan 26. i 27. travnja 2014. u
Dubrovniku. Imao sam posebnu čast biti sudionikom ovoga
susreta na kojem se okupilo preko 35 tisuća mladih iz Hr-
vatske i BiH, te većina hrvatskih biskupa i preko 700 sveće-
nika. Geslo ovog susreta bilo je : „ Na slobodu pozva-
ni“ ( Gal 5,13). Iako je vrijeme bilo kišovito mlade nije ome-
talo da aktivno sudjeluju na Euharistijskom slavlju u Gružu
te u župama dubrovačke biskupije koje su ih ugostile. Ovo
je bila manifestacija vjere mladih Hrvata.
Idući susret mladih bit će u Vukovaru 2017.
Draga katolička hrvatska mladeži Kanade i Amerike! Vaš prošlogodišnji uspješni susret na
Norvalu od 7. – 9. lipnja 2013. sve nas je obvezao da se Mladifest održi i ove godine na istom mjes-
tu u Norvalu od 4. – 6. srpnja 2014. Dirljivo je bilo vaše svjedočenje vjere. Jedan od prošlogodišnjih
sudionika rekao je ovo: „ Na Mladifest su me natjerali roditelji i nevoljko sam došao, ali ono što sam
doživio na ovom susretu je nešto najljepše što se dogodilo u mom životu. Cijelo moje biće bilo je is-
punjeno Božjom milošću i neopisivom radošću.“
Dragi mladi prijatelji! Bog u kojega vjerujemo jest uskrsli živi Isus i jedini Spasitelj čovjeka.
Svima onima koji dolaze na njegove izvore daje svoju božansku milost i radost. Koju ovaj svijet ne
može dati. Isus je svoju ljubav posebno pokazivao prema mladima. Uskrisio je od mrtvih jedinca
sina majke udovice iz Naima i mladu djevojku Jairovu kći. Mnoge mladiće i djevojke liječio je od du-
ševnih i tjelesnih bolesti. Vi mladi morate biti svjesni da ovaj svijet u kojem danas živimo nije sretan,
jer je izgubio Boga i zarobljen je porocima ovoga svijeta. Ovi susreti mladih imaju upravo tu zadaću
da vas dovedu do Isusa i da vam pokaže put kojim trebate hoditi i kako se na tom putu vladati. Ne-
prijatelj Boga i čovjeka, posebno vas mladih, je Sotona koji vas želi zarobiti: novcem, seksom, dro-
gom, alkoholom, kockom, nemoralom i svim drugim porocima. Jedini i pravi Vaš prijatelj je Isus Krist
koji vas je kadar od svega toga sačuvati i život vam osmisliti. Budite uvjereni da vas Isus nikada ne-
će napustiti i izdati. On je spreman i sutra za svakog od vas ići na križ i dati se razapeti, samo da vi
budete sretni.
Bogu smo zahvalni da će i ove godine predvoditelj ovoga susreta biti, svećenik, salezijanac,
don Damir Stojić. On je kateheta mladih na Jarunu u Zagrebu. Na tisuće mladi dolaze na njegova
predavanja i svetu misu gdje ih hrani Božjom Riječi i Euharistijskim kruhom. Ovom prigodom, poseb-
no zahvaljujem fra Tomislavu Peku glavnom animatoru i organizatoru ovoga susreta. Pozdravljam i
zbor mladih „ Kairos“ koji je svojim nastupima po našim župama animirao mlade da se uključe na
ovaaj susret. Zahvaljujem i fra Marku Puljiću ravnatelju Franjevačkog Središta na Norvalu koji je kao
domaćin velikodušno prihvatio da se i ove godine ovaj susret održi na Norvalu. Hvala i svim župnici-
ma i pastoralnom djelatnicima, Amerike i Kanade koji su se zauzeli u svojim župama da njihovi mladi
sudjeluju na ovom susretu.
I na koncu, molim Trojedinoga Boga da izlije obilje svoga blagoslova na sve sudionike i vodi-
telje ovoga susreta.

Leah darrow
Leah Darrow is a speaker that challenges her inter-
national audiences to live their lives in accordance
with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. She speaks on topics
which include modesty, chastity, mercy, conversion,
and human dignity.
Leah first gained international attention with her de-
but on the reality television show, America’s Next
Top Model. As one of the 14 finalists, Leah’s foray in-
to the world of modeling aired in late September of
2004. Following her time on the reality show, Leah
continued to work in the world of modeling making
appearances in many national and international pub-
lications. As she neared completion on what was to
be her last photo shoot, Leah had an experience that
set her life on a different course. Realizing her pro-
fession placed her in situations in which she was not
truly comfortable, Leah left the modeling industry
and has devoted herself to speaking about Gospel of
Jesus Christ and helping people find their love, acceptance and beauty in Him.
Leah is especially inspired to share her message on modesty, dignity, mercy, chastity,
and conversion. Her goal is to add value to the faith and life of her audiences and to
help them find lasting happiness. She does this by encouraging them to find happi-
ness that rests in the infinite world rather than in the temporalities of life. Leah em-
phasizes that the temporal world sells a kind of happiness that is driven by possessi-
ons, beauty, and money and points out that these things can never bring true satis-
faction. She also enjoys speaking to women about the many gifts, talents and abilities
they have to offer and endeavors to teach them how to embrace their God-given
dignity through being classy, fabulous, and faithful.
Before her premier in America’s Next Top Model, Leah Darrow earned her BA in
Psychology from the University of Missouri St. Louis. Today, she is furthering her edu-
cation by working toward her MA in Theology at the Augustine Institute in Denver, Co-
lorado. Her full-time work as an apologist and speaker for Catholic Answers from 2010
-2013 has given Leah the opportunity to bring her experiences in education, fashion,
and reality television to audiences around the world.
In addition to her modeling and public speaking endeavors, Leah has been given the
chance to appear on many radio and television programs to discuss the topics of faith

and culture. She has also had the chance to par-
ticipate in a United Nations panel discussion in
July of 2011 on behalf of international youth.
Recent opportunities have placed Leah in front
of an audience of 15,000 youth in Manila during
her Real Love Revolution tour at the World Trade
center in the Philippines. She has also given the
keynote address for more than 6,000 college
students at the national FOCUS conference,
SEEK2013, which was held at Walt Disney World.
Leah strives to do her part in the call for a New
Evangelization by speaking to audiences at
events, schools, retreats, and parishes. She sha-
res her love for The Gospel by relating real-life
stories, personal experiences, inspiration, and a
little down-to-earth sarcasm. She hopes to help
her audiences understand the importance of
purity, chastity, modesty, and living happy and
fulfilling lives by following Jesus Christ.

Fr. Damir Stojic, SDB
Norval’s very own Salesian priest and student chaplain at the
University of Zagreb. Beloved by students across Croatia he
will come home to address youths who are like him, children
of Croatian immigrants.

Fr. Damir Stojić is a salesian priest born in 1973 in Toronto,

Canada, as the youngest, third son of Croatian emigres.

After having graduated from a salesian high school in Cana-

da he begins psychology studies and after a summer in Croa-
tia he decides to join the Croatian salesian province where
he begins his theology studies at the university of Zagreb. He
completed catechetical internships in Split and in Sondria,
Italy. In 2002 he completes his theology studies and is ordai-
ned as a priest. He went on to work as the associate pastor
at the “Duh Sveti” and “Sveta Mati Slobode” parishes at Ja-
run in Zagreb. In 2004. he went on to graduate studies in
moral theology in Washington, DC, at the Catholic University of America where he re-
ceived his master’s degree on the topic of “Principles of Catholic social teaching on the
rights of minorities”. During his studies he was the pastor at the Croatian Catholic mis-
sion St. Blaise in Washington, DC, as well as the student chaplain at the University of
America. He returned to Croatia once again in 2007 where he was decreed by the
Archbishop of Zagreb, Josip Bozanić, to be the student chaplain at the University of
Zagreb. He is a member of the youth ministry commission of the conference of Croati-
an Catholic bishops as well as a
member of the Croatian salesian
province. He promotes the
“Theology of the Body” based on
the writings of Bl. John Paul II.
by hosting forums, lectures, se-
minars, retreats across Croatia
and abroad. Aside from being
the student chaplain he also ful-
fills his regular pastoral duties at
the “Sv. Mati Slobode” church in
Zagreb.

Tanya Granic Allen
Tanya Granic Allen is a Canadian writer (Croatian/Maltese bac-
kground), commentator, and spokeswoman.

Primarily focusing on issues affecting women and the family,

Tanya also provides commentary on Canadian and American po-
litics and current affairs.

She has over 20 years experience in politics at the local, natio-

nal and international level

Tanya Granic Allen resides in Toronto, Canada with her husband

and children.

Fr. Frank Kelly, SDB

Fr. Frank Kelly, SDB, was born and raised in
Brooklyn, N.Y. In 1954, Fr. Frank came to the
Salesians as an aspirant in West Haverstraw,
N.Y. After his novitiate year in Newton, N.J., he
made his first profession in 1959. Fr. Kelly did his
post-novitiate formation at Don Bosco College,
Newton, Don Bosco Prep, Ramsey, N.J., and Ho-
pe Haven in Marrero, LA. Fr. Frank made his per-
petual profession at Newton in 1965. Fr. Kelly
was formed as a Salesian priest at the Josephi-
num in Columbus. After ordination in 1971, Fr.
Kelly was among the first DRAs at Salesian High
School, New Rochelle, N.Y., and Don Bosco Prep,
Ramsey, N.J. Fr. Frank was assistant pastor at
St. Anthony Parish in Elizabeth. He served on
the Marian Shrine retreat team. He was director of Salesian Junior Seminary in Gos-
hen, N.Y., from 1983-1986. In 1986, Fr. Kelly brought his deep spirituality and hearty
laugh to the Salesian community in Etobicoke, Ont. While in the Toronto area, Fr.
Frank has served as director of the Salesian community and pastor of St. Benedict Pa-
rish. From 2000 to 2006, Fr. Kelly was vice provincial for the Canadian vice province.
At present, Fr. Kelly lives with the Salesian community in Etobicoke, where he serves
as a priest and spiritual guide.

YOUTH CHOIR "KAIROS"
“KAIROS” is the youth choir at our Croatian Franciscan Centre in Norval, Ontario. The
choir was born out of the first Mladifest (2013) where they sang together with our gu-
ests from Croatia, Božja Pobjeda. Their name come from the theme of the Mladi-
fest: "Now is the time of salvation" -2 Cor 6:2 and in biblical Greek it loosely means
"THE RIGHT MOMENT". After Mladifest 2013, they continued to gather for practices
and continually improved their skills and repertoire. In the fall of 2013 they began to
sing the newly instituted Sunday evening bilingual mass at Norval. They also tour
playing masses at Croatian parishes in promotion of Mladifest. The enthusiastic youth
who founded the choir consist of a mix of newly arrived youth from Bosna & Hercego-
vina who brought with them their experience and talents from back home, together
with Canadian born Croatians they bring a new life and heighten the experience of
God at every liturgy they play at. It is their hope to start a trend of forming youth
choirs in other Croatian parishes because the talent is certainly there. If you are in the
Toronto area you are more than welcome to join them either to stay with them or le-
arn from them so that you can start a similar choir in your own parish. KAIROS is pro-
ud to be the musical heartbeat of Mladifest 2014 and looks forward to seeing YOU
there!

Mladifest: A Letter From Milwaukee
SRCE ISUSOVO—MILWAUKEE
Have you ever looked back on your life and really thought about how many things had
to have happened to get you to the point you are at today? What makes us who we
are? Why are we the way we are? Can we be better? Am I the person who I want to
be? What do I value? These are some questions we have been pondering here in
Milwaukee.

Over time the youth has become more and more distant from the Church and their
Catholic roots because there is “too much going on” and “they don’t have the time”. It
is a sad phenomenon. Going to church is a blessing, not because you are “in church”,
but it is the one hour a week you devote to God and yourself. It is a special time we
were given to really think about what we have done in the past week and how that
has impacted everyone around us. It allows us to ask for forgiveness for all the harm
we may have done and for strength to become better and make the right choi-
ces. We go to church to learn about love, family, community, hope, faith, happiness,
and many other great things, all we have to do is open our hearts.

The importance of the church within a Croatian Community may not be evident in ot-
her places as much as it is here in Milwaukee. We see that the glue holding the Croa-
tian people and Croatian traditions together is not the cultural groups, it’s not the soc-
cer, it’s not the group of old men playing bocce, it is the church. It is evident, that if
our church would cease to exist, so would the Croatian community and all our traditi-
ons. We realize how lucky we are to have such an amazing community, and we want
to fight to keep it alive. We are the youth, and we are the future. We know that what
happens to our community is in our hands and we want to make sure we have a futu-
re.

Mladifest to us is about strengthening that glue across communities and the diaspora.
It is about going on a journey that brings to question who you are, what you are do-
ing, and where you are going. It is important for every member of the Croatian youth
to go, not just because it is good for them but because it is what is needed to keep
alive our Croatian traditions, our Croatian clubs, our groups, and everything else.
Think about your Croatian community, where do you find out about Croatian events?
Where do you find out about Croatian groups? Where did you first meet your Croatian
friends? The church and God is what allow us to have all of these things, it is our job
to make sure these things are available for our children and their children’s children.

Mladifest to us is also about building a better self and becoming closer to God. It’s

about giving God the chance to show you the power of His glory, His love, His patien-
ce, and His mercy. He has your back, even when you sin, even when you fall, even
when you curse Him out. If you need Him and you look for Him, He will be there. Are
you mad at him for something that happened in your life? Are you questioning how a
God can exist when such bad things are happening? Are you frustrated because the
cross you are carrying is too heavy? Mladifest is about allowing yourself to ask these
questions and helping you understand the answers. God loves you and always will, re-
member he was the one that gifted you with the ability to ask these questions.

Mladifest is not just for people who already believe with all their heart, rather it is for
anyone who wants to get to the point where you believe with all your heart. It is abo-
ut learning about your faith. It is about exploring and opening what is in your heart,
then letting it out. Now ask yourself, why would you not want to go? What possible
reason could there be? Are you afraid people will judge you? Do you think you're not
“good” enough or that you are “too cool” to go? Are you worried you won’t fit in? Are
you scared because you don’t know all the answers? Is it because you don’t know
anyone else going? Is it just something that is not important enough for you? None of
those reasons are a good enough excuse not to go. The things you can get out of this
experience have the ability be much greater than any of those fears. We urge you to
take a leap of faith and join us.

Here in Milwaukee we have been working on spreading the word, getting more people

to come with us, and doing some fundraising so we can help lower the cost of travel
and also help out the Norval Community. Mladifest isn’t just for them, it is for all the
Croatian youth in North America. It’s not fair that they do all the heavy lifting.
Recently we had a very successful fundraiser here. We sold Burek, Sirnica (aka burek
sa sirom), and Cevapi dinners, and we SOLD OUT of everything we had. The support
from our community was amazing. We were amazed by the selflessness from people.
We had many people come help who were not going to Mladifest and who didn’t even
have kids or grandkids that would be going! We had so many people come up to us
and tell us how proud they are of us here taking initiative and moving forward.
However, let it be known that none of this would be possible without the support of
Father Ivan Strmecki. He has been behind us the entire time and we know he would
do anything to help us.

This year we have some returners and some newcomers, for whom it will be their first
time. We are going because we want to strengthen our faith and we are really excited
to be around people who are there for that same cause. It will be amazing being sur-
rounded by people who share our values and our love for God. It is about connecting
with people on deeper level. We want to make the world a better place by becoming
better people. We want to spread joy, happiness, hope, mercy, and faith around the
world. So we have decided that we are going to make a pledge of goodness to prepa-
re ourselves for Mladifest and
begin opening our hearts. We
are pledging every day, from
today till the Mladifest, to go out
of our way to do something kind
and good for someone else. We
believe that core of being Catho-
lic is love, kindness, humility,
and forgiveness, and want to
strive to become better.

We hope to see you at Mladifest!

Svemogući vječni Bože!

Zahvaljujemo Ti što si nas stvorio tako čudesno! Živimo ovdje u Sjevernoj Americi, da-
leko od hrvatske zemlje naših očeva i pradjedova. Ti si vodio svoj narod iz tuđine pre-
ma obećanoj zemlji; molimo Te vodi i nas da upoznamo spasenjsku moć Tvoga Sina
Isusa Krista koji, usred ponuda ovoga svijeta, jedini donosi istinsku sreću i radost.

Želimo biti Tvoje ruke i tvoje noge kako bi liječili rane ovoga svijeta, kako bi širili Tvoju
ljubav i dobrotu gdje god prolazimo. Po zagovoru hrvatskih blaženika, svetaca i naše
nebeske majke Marije, želimo posvetiti svoju mladost Tebi i tako postati tvoji sveci no-
vog tisućljeća. Sada je naše vrijeme, sada je vrijeme spasenja, računaj na nas, Gospo-
dine, kao što i mi računamo na Tvoju pomoć i vodstvo!

To te molimo po Kristu Gospodinu našemu.

Almighty and everlasting God!

We thank You for creating us so wonderfully! We live here in North America far from
the Croatian land of our fathers and forefathers. You led your people from foreign pla-
ces toward the Promised Land; we pray that You lead us also so that we may come to
know the saving power of Your son Jesus Christ who, among the offers of this world,
is the only one who brings true happiness and joy.

We want to be Your hands and feet so that we may heal the wounds of this world,
that we may spread Your love and goodness wherever we go. Through the intercessi-
on of the Croatian blessed, saints, and our heavenly mother, Mary, we want to dedica-
te our youth to You so that we may Your saints of the new millennium. Now is our ti-
me, now is the time of salvation, count on us Lord as we count on Your help and gui-
dance!

We pray this through Christ our Lord.
