Vice-Chancellor‟s Message
The recent velocity and profundity of our country‟s
economic downturn has presented an extraordinary
experience for many of us due to global recession
and shortage of energy resources resulted in lack of
industrial and agricultural productivity. The economic challenges that we are
facing now and which we will most likely continue to face in many years to
come had tremendous impact on our university. In addition to that, the vacant
post of Vice-Chancellor for more than six months hampered the efficiency and
performance of the university. We, however, struggled against all odds to
strengthen our University.

During the last one year particularly, the BZU has continued to provide quality
education as per the expectations of the students‟ and the research grant was
increased considerably having exponential increase impact on the
International publications of the university. It was supported by world class
cutting edge research for which the University has been highly commended
by the Higher Education Commission, Pakistan.

Due to the untiring efforts of my colleagues, the Higher Education

Commission ranked BZU 3rd in the General (large) universities of Pakistan in
2011. All our achievements whether in academia, research, construction or
administration have virtually no limits.

Our lush green and environment friendly campus, dynamic faculty, well-
equipped class rooms, modern laboratories and Quality Enhancement
Directorate are an indication of the overall dynamism of the B.Z. University.
We should be proud of our continued growth which has made this year
rewarding and the credit goes to my brilliant colleagues whose sincere
devotion have made our success possible.

Prof. Dr. Syed Khawaja Alqama,

Vice Chancellor
Bahauddin Zakariya University, Multan

Executive Summary

Multan is a historical educational city and various Islamic scholars selected

this part of Earth as religious and spiritual teaching and guidance. To meet the
educational need of people of this area, the University of Multan was
established in 1975 and then renamed as Bahauddin Zakariya University
(BZU) in 1979.

Teaching and research quality standards at BZU has helped to earn 9 th place
in research category among 134 universities/degree awarding institutes of the
country 2011-12. It is further satisfying to mention that, in the category of
general universities BZU is ranked at No.3 in the country in 2011-12.
University main campus is spread over 960 acres located at a distance of 7
km from the city center. Initially university started its functioning in a rented
building in 1975 with 8 departments and now, it has more than 55
departments/institutes/colleges. With a quality ensemble of 518 faculty
members, 189 hold doctoral degrees who are actively involved in research
has produced over 2500 publications in the previous 10 years. The BZU
faculty is among the proud recipients of almost 10 civil awards conferred each
year by the Government of Pakistan for notable and meritorious services to
the country. Fleet of 28 buses, 3 coaches and 36 small vehicles (cars, vans,
loaders) provide transport facilities to students and staff whole round the year.

BZU has large student body rising up to 18992 regular students and 3000
distance education students, out which more than half are female. The heart-
warming fact is that the graduates are not only gainfully employed, but a good
number of them are entrepreneurs creating jobs themselves, such as owners
of Faisal Movers, Mehmood Textile Group etc. Presently university is offering
almost 120 programs at all level of education i.e. BS, M.A/M.Sc, M. Phil. and
Ph.D. Additionally, in recent years, the University has taken a lead by
establishing Departments of Environmental Sciences, Sport Sciences, Gender
Studies, Geographic Sciences and Institute of Social Sciences are some of
very recent developments in addition to that of Saraiki Area Study Centre,

Page 6/106
English Language Centre, Institute of Advanced Materials, Institute of
Molecular Biology & Biotechnology and Faculty of Veterinary Sciences. It
offers higher degrees in M.Phil/MS and Ph.D. in almost 40 departments.
Various short-term course, diplomas and associate degrees are also popular
with the general public which are offered from time to time by the university.

Significant enhancement in students' enrolment has been observed in recent

years, therefore, to ensure quality in academics and research, Quality
Enhancement Directorate has been established. Almost 20 new buildings
have been completed in recent years and still many are under construction.
These buildings will provide better facilities to the students. The University has
implemented semester in all BS, M. Phil, and PhD programs and annual
system in MA/MSc program in the departments. Furthermore, organizing
national & international conferences and seminars has been a routine
academic activity. A 73 number of faculty members have been awarded Ph.D.
scholarships and post-doc research fellowships during the last five years.
Capacity building of faculty members and officers is the priority of the
university.

from all over the world came for studies and research. Multan has maintained
its central position and centuries old cultural heritage and therefore suited
ideally to become a centre of learning. Thus the University of Multan was
established in 1975 by an Act of the Punjab Legislative Assembly. To pay
homage to the Great Saint, the name was changed from the University of
Multan to Bahauddin Zakariya University in 1979.

Chapter-2: Research & Development

2.1 R&D - An Overview

Modern universities are drives by the research conducted in them. As the

mission of BZU is three dimensional, excellence in research is fundamental to
the other two. Course outline designed and taught at BZU are well in line with
modern concept of research. A compulsory research methodology course is
taught at all academic levels; moreover, lab work is an integral part of course
works at BS, MSc, M. Phil and PhD level. Submission of dissertation at BS is
must in most of the course outline while it‟s compulsory for M. Phil and PhD
degrees. University is putting its best to improve the research infrastructure in
departments and simultaneously trying to inculcate research ethics as well.
Faculty members are provided with intramural research grants in order to train
scholars and conduct research in their respective field research to resolve
societal problems by which they contribute to our mission of public service.
University has taken initiatives to induce faculty members to complement
each other in existing research activities in order to create new synergies and
discoveries that are not otherwise achievable.

that may also work as office of resource generation and development,
develop linkages with industry, local community, national and
international organization, alumni and academia.

Bahauddin Zakariya University is located in South of Punjab which is

well known for its agricultural production and related industry
particularly textile industry is very common in the area. This university
is well aware of it responsibilities to meet the need of farmers and
industrialists through research and consultancy services. It is a fact that
revolution in agricultural and industrial sector is possible only trough
innovation and creative work. For the reason the major focuses of the
university is on its research activities and its recent trend of exponential
increase in national and international publication indicates the
commitment of management of the university. During last couple of

pecking order‟ among universities in the country. The national capacity
to undertake research projects is fully dependent on the continued
growth and development of basic research within the higher education
system. Huge investment in Biotechnology, Agricultural Sciences,
Mathematics, Chemistry, Veterinary Sciences, etc. by BZU depicts the
significance of basic research which in turn facilitates innovation.

The objectives of the research at the university are:

1. To advise the University Authorities on all matters connected with

the promotion of research and publication of results of research in
the University.

2. To deal with and advise University Authorities on all matters

connected with the research problems and projects including those

researchers and scholars to proceed for research without any financial or
administrative hindrance. The ORIC office is actually the strengthen
shape of the Directorate of Research with extended scope to take care of
technology incubation activities, Patent matters and generate new
initiates for research collaboration. There is an immense need of
establishment of ORIC at BZU for which work is going on for its proper
approval from statutory bodies. All the academic and administrative
departments have been encouraged to actively take part in research and
consultancy activities. Faculty of Agriculture and Science is actively
engaged in consultancy services to the formers and few projects with the
help of foreign agencies are in process by the university. The activities

Chapter-9: Universities Building Communities

9.1 University-community Interaction

BZU signed Agreement with PSIC

Mr. Farhan Aziz Khawaja, Managing Director of Punjab Small

Industries Corporation (PSIC) visited the BZU in May 2012 and called
on the Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Syed Khawaja Alqama in his office. An
MoU was signed between University College of Arts and Punjab Small
Industries Corporation for making joint efforts for promotion of local
handicrafts, provision of facilities of marketing of local products and
imparting training to local youth in these particular arts. Besides, BS
designing/handicraft programme will be initiated soon.

9.2 University’s role in building community

Community is one of the biggest stakeholders of the university

education. It includes parents, general public and employers. The
community can play vital role in educational policy development and its
execution. The inputs from various stakeholders of the community are
essential for quality education to meet the national and regional needs.
Again, unfortunately this is one of the week areas that needs to be
strengthened. This university organizes annual meeting and student
week and parents are encouraged to participate but their participation
is not encouraging. An awareness program for community participation
is needed. In future university has a policy to actively engage the
community in providing feedback to the institution.

Page 73/106
9.3 Alumni Affairs: Outstanding Achievements etc

Alumni of the university is considered to be the true ambassador

working free of cost and providing financial and academic support
through their feedbacks. Alumni wish to contribute to the enrichment
and enhancement of the quality of education being received by the
students and also make contribution to the society at large. They
associate and involve in fostering professional, academic and social
links with the university. The alumni as a stakeholder is significant
during the different stages of institutional activities such as need
analysis phase, curriculum design phase, implementation phase and in
evaluation.

Alumni continue to be the largest source of private contribution to

education in analysis and evaluation of the existing policies of the
university. They are instrumental in gaining valuable insights about
various industries, employers and society. They identify what kind of
experience and skills are needed to obtain specific position in
profession. They provide feedback through which the institution can
update academic courses most relevant to current requirements.
Besides they identify career opportunities available in a particular field
based upon which academic programmes can be decided. The alumni
can help the institution during curriculum development and revision
with a view to include courses on entrepreneurship skills and
leadership qualities for students by giving the feedback periodically.
They help to identify the currently appropriate requirements for
development relevant to successful employment, ensuring the inclusion
of essential skill elements. They also help to identify the professional
organizations which are useful to the particular field and to know what
type of skills is most important for industry. Alumni can involve
themselves in providing orientation programmes and providing funds.
The alumni may institute awards prizes and contribute books to the

Page 74/106
library or establish book bank. Fund can be raised to cater to the needs
of the genuinely deserving candidates. They can provide financial aid
to support the poor, needy and meritorious.

Bahauddin Zakariya University is composed of around 50 departments

and there is no centralized alumni data bank as a result strong alumni
infrastructure does not exist. However, individual departments are
maintaining record of some ex-students. The university is try its level
best to set up a centralized data bank for alumni and hope that in future
this university would be able to get all the benefits associated with the
alumni. Some departments like Institute of Management Sciences,
Institute of Bank Alfalah and Department of Physics are leader in
establishing the alumni infrastructure.
