Vice-Chancellor‟s Message
The recent velocity and profundity of our country‟s
economic downturn has presented an extraordinary
experience for many of us due to global recession
and shortage of energy resources resulted in lack of
industrial and agricultural productivity. The economic challenges that we are
facing now and which we will most likely continue to face in many years to
come had tremendous impact on our university. In addition to that, the vacant
post of Vice-Chancellor for more than six months hampered the efficiency and
performance of the university. We, however, struggled against all odds to
strengthen our University.
During the last one year particularly, the BZU has continued to provide quality
education as per the expectations of the students‟ and the research grant was
increased considerably having exponential increase impact on the
International publications of the university. It was supported by world class
cutting edge research for which the University has been highly commended
by the Higher Education Commission, Pakistan.
Our lush green and environment friendly campus, dynamic faculty, well-
equipped class rooms, modern laboratories and Quality Enhancement
Directorate are an indication of the overall dynamism of the B.Z. University.
We should be proud of our continued growth which has made this year
rewarding and the credit goes to my brilliant colleagues whose sincere
devotion have made our success possible.

Executive Summary
Teaching and research quality standards at BZU has helped to earn 9 th place
in research category among 134 universities/degree awarding institutes of the
country 2011-12. It is further satisfying to mention that, in the category of
general universities BZU is ranked at No.3 in the country in 2011-12.
University main campus is spread over 960 acres located at a distance of 7
km from the city center. Initially university started its functioning in a rented
building in 1975 with 8 departments and now, it has more than 55
departments/institutes/colleges. With a quality ensemble of 518 faculty
members, 189 hold doctoral degrees who are actively involved in research
has produced over 2500 publications in the previous 10 years. The BZU
faculty is among the proud recipients of almost 10 civil awards conferred each
year by the Government of Pakistan for notable and meritorious services to
the country. Fleet of 28 buses, 3 coaches and 36 small vehicles (cars, vans,
loaders) provide transport facilities to students and staff whole round the year.
BZU has large student body rising up to 18992 regular students and 3000
distance education students, out which more than half are female. The heart-
warming fact is that the graduates are not only gainfully employed, but a good
number of them are entrepreneurs creating jobs themselves, such as owners
of Faisal Movers, Mehmood Textile Group etc. Presently university is offering
almost 120 programs at all level of education i.e. BS, M.A/M.Sc, M. Phil. and
Ph.D. Additionally, in recent years, the University has taken a lead by
establishing Departments of Environmental Sciences, Sport Sciences, Gender
Studies, Geographic Sciences and Institute of Social Sciences are some of
very recent developments in addition to that of Saraiki Area Study Centre,
Page 6/106
English Language Centre, Institute of Advanced Materials, Institute of
Molecular Biology & Biotechnology and Faculty of Veterinary Sciences. It
offers higher degrees in M.Phil/MS and Ph.D. in almost 40 departments.

Research & innovation has paramount importance at BZU, for it is
believed that in the years to come, research & innovation performance
and reputation would be the critical determinants of the „institutional
pecking order‟ among universities in the country. The national capacity
to undertake research projects is fully dependent on the continued
growth and development of basic research within the higher education
system. Huge investment in Biotechnology, Agricultural Sciences,
Mathematics, Chemistry, Veterinary Sciences, etc. by BZU depicts the
significance of basic research which in turn facilitates innovation.
Page 54/106
Students are motivated for research and consultancy through their
participation in the projects.
Talented students are encouraged by giving them Honorarium from
the research projects.
For promotion and key awards in the university, the research and
consultancy activities are given special importance in overall
scores.
After incurring expenditure, 80% of the money earned through
consultancy is given to the consultant and 20% share goes to
University for revenue generation.
For the benefits of local community, this university provides funds
from its own resources to the researchers to carry out problem
oriented research.
