It is not necessaryto followDr. von der Leyen throughthe other
divisions of the Marchen which he ingeniouslyestablishes. It is
possiblethat he meansno morethan thatthe toneof certainMdrchen
correspondsto the tone of a certainperiodin Germanliteratureand
that those storiesmay have been remodeledto suit the prevailing
literaryfashion. It hardlyseems possible that he means that the
Mdrchenwereactuallycomposedout of oldermaterialat the periods
he indicates. The meritof his classificationconsists,in his eyes, in
the fact that "no matterhow incompleteit is and must remain,it
still makes clear how the developmentof the German literatureis
reflectedin the Mdrchen,and shows in all its vicissitudesthe forces
whichwere ever active in that literature. What a wonderfulthing
it is that the childhoodof mankindand the progressof our entire

p. 19. This storywas omittedin subsequenteditionson account of its
foreignorigin. In the prefaceto the second edition (1819) the editors
say: "Was wir nun bisher fiir unsere Sammlung gewonnenhatten,

dependence upon Perrault's "Chat BottS," which was circulated in

Saxony and Austria are mentioned. Tonnelat is under the erroneous
impressionthat the Grimms' sources were Perrault and Basile, and
remarksthat if theyhad collectedthis storyfromoral tradition,they
would not have failedto mentionit.
No. 34. "Hansens Trine." This version,which Bolte and Polivka say
was told to the brothersby Dortchen Wild in the garden at Cassel,
September29, 1811, was replaced in 1819 by a variant fromZwehrn
told by Frau Viehmannin. The firstversionis reprintedin Bolte and
Polivka, I, 335. Tonnelat, as in several other cases, regardsthis as
a merechangeof name. In realityit is the substitutionof anotherver-
sion whichseemedbetterto the brothers.
No. 35. "Der Sperlingund seine vier Kinder." Replaced in 1819 and
subsequenteditionsby "Der Schneiderim Himmel,"and relegatedto
No. 157. Change of positiononly.
No. 36. "Von dem Tischen deck dich, Goldesel und Kniippel aus dem
Sack." The story in 1812 consisted of two versions: (1) related by
JeannetteHassenpflugin Cassel in the autumnof 1812,and (2) a second
Hessian version related by Dortchen Wild, October 1, 1811. This
second versionwas omittedfrom1819 on, and reprintedin Notes, 1822,
1856, in a condensedform. The fullversionis reprintedin Bolte and
Polivka, I, 349. Tonnelat does not mentionthis change,but on p. 73
gives an elaborate account of the stylisticchanges in this storyin the
second edition.
No. 37. "Von der Serviette,dem Kanonenhiitleinund dem Horn." Re-
placed from1819 on by "Daumesdick," and, in a fullerversion,rele-

KINDERLEGENDEN

In the editionof 1819, the brothersintroduceda new categoryof tales,

the Kinderlegenden.1We have alreadyseen that in the secondvolumeofthe
firstedition, 1815, No. 35, "Die himmlischeHochzeit," the collectors
remarkedof the story: "Grinzt an die Legende und ist doch auch ganz
kindermirchenhaft," and in later editions relegatedthe story to the new
category. There were nine Kinderlegenden in 1819 to 1843 inclusive. In
1850 a new one, "Die Haselruthe," "aus den vorarlbergischen Sagen von
Vonbun, S. 7," was added. Since then no change has been made in this
category.
BRUCHSTUCKE
We have alreadyseen that in 1812,First Volume,No. 85, " Fragmente"
consistedoffourpieces: (a) "Schneeblume"; (b) "PrinzessinmitderLaus";
(c) "Vom Prinz Johannes"; (d) "Der gute Lappen." These stories,as we
have seen above, were replacedfrom1819 on by "Die Goldkinder,"which
was No. 63 in 1812,but less fullyrelated. The second ofthefourfragments,
"Prinzessin mit der Laus," was alone deemed worthyof preservationand
was relegated,in the volumeofNotes,1822 and 1856,to the new categoryof
"Bruchstticke," No. 2, "Die Laus." Two other stories, 1812, No. 33,
"Der gestiefelteKater," and 1812, No. 84, "Die Schwiegermutter"(name
changed to "Die bdse Schwiegermutter"),were for reasons stated above
relegatedto the new categoryin 1822 and 1856. Two other fragmentary
tales were added in 1822 and 1856: No. 1, "Der Mann vom Galgen," and
No. 3, "Der starkeHans," an exploitof Hans not relatedin No. 166, in the
storyof the same name. Finally,in 1856 was added No. 6, " Marchenhafte
Bruchstiickein Volksliedern,"containingthree allusions from Fischart's
Gargantuaand Andr. Gryphius' Gedichte. Tonnelat, p. 38, says of the
"Fragments" in general: "C'est justementparce qu'elles ne contiennent
que des fragments que les pages prdc6dentesont 6tdretranch6esde la seconde
