THE EXTERNAL HISTORY OF THE KINDER- UND HA US-
MARCHEN OF THE BROTHERS GRIMM. III
It is not necessaryto followDr. von der Leyen throughthe other
divisions of the Marchen which he ingeniouslyestablishes. It is
possiblethat he meansno morethan thatthe toneof certainMdrchen
correspondsto the tone of a certainperiodin Germanliteratureand
that those storiesmay have been remodeledto suit the prevailing
literaryfashion. It hardlyseems possible that he means that the
Mdrchenwereactuallycomposedout of oldermaterialat the periods
he indicates. The meritof his classificationconsists,in his eyes, in
the fact that "no matterhow incompleteit is and must remain,it
still makes clear how the developmentof the German literatureis
reflectedin the Mdrchen, and shows in all its vicissitudesthe forces
whichwere ever active in that literature. What a wonderfulthing
it is that the childhoodof mankindand the progressof our entire
Germanpoetry(Dichtung)is revealedto our childrenin the German
Mdrchen!"
II. HISTORY OF THE INDIVIDUAL TALES1
VOLUME I, 1812
No. 4. "Gut Kegel-und Kartenspiel."Reprinted in Bolteand Polivka,
I, 22. ThisHessianstorywasreplacedin 1819andsubsequent editions
by a Mecklenburg versionentitled: "Von einemder auszog, das
Fiirchtenzu lernen." In theNotes,1822and 1856,six otherversions
arementioned, twoofwhich,thefifth fromZwehrn and thesixthfrom
Paderborn, are printedat length. Theyare also givenin Bolteand
Polivka,I, 25, 28. The versionin thefirsteditioncontainsonlyone,
and thefinal,testofcourage.
No. 6. "Von derNachtigallundderBlindschleiche."Reprinted in Ton-
nelat,p. 8, and in Bolte and Polivka, I, 57 (6a). This storywas replaced
in the second and subsequent editionsby "Der treue Johannes." In
the "Anhang" to the firstedition,Panzer I, 392, the editorssay: "Aus
dem Franz6sischentibersetzt. MRmoiresde l'academie celtique,Tome
2, 204, 205. Vergl. T. 4, 102. Das Mirchen und der Glauben findet
sich unter den Solognots. Die franz6sischenReime ahmen den Ton
der Nachtigallglticklicher nach:
Je feraimon nid si haut, si haut, si haut, si bas!
Que tu ne le trouveraspas.
1The tales not mentioned in this list are supposed to be continued through the
seven editions, or the editions following their first appearance, with the usual stylistic
changes only. Forty-seven tales in 1812, and fifty-threein 1815, have persisted in the
subsequent editions and have undergone stylistic changes only.

No. 70. "Der Okerlo." Replaced from 1819 on by "Die drei Glicks-
kinder." The originalstoryis reprintedin Tonnelat,p. 22, and in Bolte
and Polivka, II, 77 (70a). Tonnelat, op. cit., thinksthe story was
omitted because it is practicallya replica of No. 56, "Der liebste
Roland."
No. 71. "Prinzessin MRusehaut." Replaced from 1819 on by "Sechse
kommen durch die ganze Welt." The original story, a variant of
No. 65, "Allerleirauh,"is reprintedby Tonnelat, p. 24, and Bolte and
Polivka, II, 47. The Grimms said in the note to "Allerlei-Rauh"
(1812): "Die PrinzessinMausehaut, No. 71, ist dieselbe mythische
Person, aber die Sage bis auf einigesganz verschieden."
No. 72. "Das Birnli will nit fallen." Replaced from 1819 on by "Der
Wolfund der Mensch." The originalstoryis reprintedby Tonnelat,
p. 25, and Bolte and Polivka, II, 100 (72a). Tonnelat,op. cit.,thinks
the storywas omittedin subsequent editions on account of being in
verse,and remarks: "Mais en l'admettantdans leur premiere6dition,
les frbresGrimmprouvaient combien ils 6taient port6sA consid6rer
leurceuvrecommeune suite du Wunderhorn."
No. 73. "Das Mordschloss." Replaced from1819 on by "Der Wolfund
der Fuchs." In thenotesto 1812,the editorssay: "Eine ArtBlaubart,
aber mit anderm, auch sonst schon bekanntemAusgang. .... Das
Ganze aus dem Hollindischeniibersetzt, das wiraus dem Munde einer
Frauleinaufgeschrieben haben. Hier moge das Originalselbststehen."
Then followsthe Dutch original. When the storywas omitted,accord-
ing to Tonnelat, on account of being a variant of No. 46, "Fitchers
Vogel," a somewhatcondensedand stylistically improvedversionof the
originalwas given in the Notes, 1822 and 1856 to No. 56. The full
originalis reprintedin Bolte and Polivka, I, 407 (notes to No. 46,
"Fitchers Vogel").
No. 74. "Von Johannes-Wassersprung und Caspar-Wassersprung."
Replaced from1819on by "Der Fuchs und die Frau Gevatterin." The
originalis reprintedin Bolte and Polivka, I, 531, in notes to No. 60,
"Die zwei Briider," of which our story is only a variant and hence
omittedafterthe firstedition. The beginningof the storyis given in
the Notes,1822and 1856,to No. 60, "Die zwei Briider."
No. 75. "Vogel Ph6nix." Replaced from1819 on by "Der Fuchs und die
Katze." The originalstoryis reprintedin Tonnelat, p. 28, and Bolte
and Polivka, I, 276, in notes to No. 29, "Der Teufel mit den drei
goldenenHaaren," of which our story is a variant and hence subse-
quentlyomitted.
No. 77. "Vom Schreinerund Drechsler." Replaced from 1819 on by
"Das klugeGretel." The originalstoryis reprintedin Tonnelat,p. 29,
and Bolte and Polivka, II, 131 (77a). In the notes to 1812,the editors

No. 151.* "Die zw6lffaulen Knechte." There does not seem to be any
good reason forthe addition of this story,a variant of the one already
given under No. 151, The second story is more detailed and might
have been substitutedforthe first;both are of literaryorigin.
KINDERLEGENDEN
KINDERGLAUBEN
At the end of the "Anhang" in the firstedition, 1812, ed. Panzer, I,
464-68, containingthe notes to the storiesin the firstvolume, was "Einiges
aus dem Kinderglauben." This was reprintedin the second volume of the
second edition, 1819, and may be found in W. Grimm'sKleinereSchriften,
I, 399-404. As has been said above, the valuable "Einleitungen" to the
firstand second volumes of the second edition, 1819, were not afterward
reprintedand must now be read in the volumeof the KleinereSchriften just
cited. The Kinderglaubenhas undergone considerable changes, chiefly
expansion,in the second edition. In the firsteditiontherewere fivepara-
graphsor divisionsof the subject. In the second editiontherewere nine.
This is anotherinstanceofthecare bestowedon each succeedingedition.
"An die Frau Bettina von Arnim," "Liebe Bettine, etc.," pp. v-viii,
as in 1857, "Vorrede," pp. (ix)-xxii,as in 1857. Pp. xxii-lxxii,"Ober-
sicht der Marchenliteratur." This "Ubersicht" begins p. xxii, directly
afterthe prefacereprintedin 1857,and ends p. lxxiiwith "Erdmannsdorf
in Schlesien am 30sten September, 1850. Wilhelm Grimm." Vol. I
contains Nos. 1-86, pp. 1-501; Vol. II contains Nos. 87-200, Kinder-
legenden,1-10, pp. 1-562. This edition is remarkableas containingin
the "Vorrede" an "tlbersicht" of the Mdrchenliterature. This first
appeared in the thirdvolume of 1822,and is repeatedherewith further
correctionsand additions. It appeared forthe last time, withadditions,
in the thirdvolume, 1856. In the briefprefaceto the seventhedition,
the editorssay: "Dort [i.e., in the 3d vol., 18561hat auch die tObersicht
der Literatur,die sonst hier [i.e., in 1850] folgte,einen angemesseren
Platz erhalten."
