TOPIC:
THE VALUE OF A SOUND MEDICATION AND VACCINATION PROGRAM

OBJECTIVES:
 Define the value of sound medication and vaccination program.
 Identify the importance of vaccination, and the precautions in administering vaccination to animals
 Differentiate the types of vaccines.
 Promote the value of sound medication and vaccination program.

LESSON PROPER:

Much of the economic loss in the livestock industry in the country is caused by diseases. Diseases are
somtimes difficult to control because they are contagious and affect most of the livestock.

The most effective method of controlling these diseases is through preventive vaccination.

Vaccination
 Vaccination is an effective way to reduce disease burden in pets and farm animals and it is a key
tool in maintaining animal health and welfare.

Vaccination cost is minimal, only about 25 to 50 pesos per head of livestock. Veterinaries from the Bureau
of Animal Industry even give their services for free. Livestock vaccine should never be used without the
prescription of the veterinarian. Durections in administring vaccination must be followed strictly.

Different types of vaccines:

1. Live (attenuated) vaccines- modified live vaccines are treated so the disease virus will not cause the
disease, but will allow the animal to develop immunity to the disease. Modified live vaccines are not
safe for pregnant animals.
2. Killed (inactivated) vaccines- are made from viruses or bacteria that are no longer active. These
vaccines are safe to give to pregnant animals.

Why do we need to vaccinate animals?

 To ensure provision of safe food.
 Safeguard our pets
 Protect the human health

The following precautions must be observed in administering vaccination to animals:

6. Disinfect the part of the animal where the vaccine is to be injected.
7. Never use the same syringe for another serum and vaccine.
