STUDENTS WITH HEARING IMPAIRMENT

Hearing impairment or disability refers to the reduced function or loss of the normal function
of the hearing mechanism.

According to the age of onset, hearing impairment can be congenital when the condition is
present at birth or adventitious when it is acquired after birth or later on. The time when a
hearing impairment occurs in terms of the normal development of spoken language at the
age of two thereabout is another classification of deafness. When the condition occurs before
the child learns to talk, deafness is pre-lingual. Deafness is called post-lingual when it is
acquired after the child has learned speech usually at the age of two.

THE TWO MAIN CATEGORIES OF HEARING IMPAIRMENT

DEAF- do not have a sufficient residual hearing to understand speech without special
instruction and training.

HARD OF HEARING- have enough residual hearing to understand speech and learn in a
regular class without much difficulty.

Hearing impairment is not simply inability to hear or to communicate through speech. The
most devastating effects of deafness is the deprivation of language.

CHARACTERISTICS OF PERSON WITH HEARING IMPAIRMENT

 Cups hand behind the ear, cocks ear/tilts head at an angle to catch sounds.

 Has strained or blank facial expression when listening or talked to.

 Moves closer to speaker, watches face especially the mouth and the lips of the speaker

when talked to.

 Less responsive to noise, voice, music and other sources of sounds.

 Uses more natural gestures, signs and movements to express self.

 Often fails to respond to oral questions.

 Often unable to follow oral directions and instructions.

THE ANATOMY and PHYSIOLOGY of THE HUMAN EAR

The ear has three main parts:
1. external or outer ear
2. middle ear
3. inner ear
The external or outer ear is consisting of:
 Pinna or auricle- this is the outside part of the ear.
 External auditory canal or tube- this is the tube that connects the outer
ear to the inside or middle ear.
 Tympanic membrane (eardrum) - the tympanic membrane divides the
external ear from the middle ear.
The middle ear (tympanic cavity) consisting of:
 Ossicles – three small bones that are connected and transmit the sound
waves to the inner ear. The bones are called:
 Malleus
 Incus
 Stapes
 Eustachian tube – a canal that links the middle ear with the back of the
nose. The Eustachian tube helps to equalize the pressure in the middle ear.
The Eustachian tube is lined with mucous, just like the inside of the nose
and throat.
The inner ear, consisting of:
 Cochlea – this contains the nerves for hearing.

 Vestibule – this contains receptors for balance.

 Semicircular canals- this contains receptors for balance.

CLASSIFICATION OF HEARING IMPAIRMENT

 Conductive hearing loss- occurs in the outer and middle ear thereby blocking the
passage of acoustic energy.
 Sensorineural hearing impairment- occurs in the inner ear. The sensitive
mechanisms and the auditory nerve may be damaged.
 Mixed hearing impairment- results from a combination of both conductive and
sensorineural hearing losses.

Etiology of Hearing Impairment

 Genetic and hereditary types of deafness- occur in one out of one
thousand live births.

 Infections- such as maternal rubella, cytomegalovirus, hepatitis B, virus,

syphilis, mumps, and otitis media may occur during pregnancy or after birth.
 Adventitious hearing loss- can be attributed to the environmental factors
such as excessive and constant exposure to very loud noises.

D. Application
If you will be a SPED teacher someday what are the teaching strategies and techniques
that you will do for students with hearing impairment?
