Course Outline
SUBJECT
The subject comprises of four parts. The first part consists of 8 lectures and provides an introduction to the theories and
practices of management as applied to the engineering profession. Topics have been chosen to cover a wide scope of
leadership and management and processes of which professionals need to be aware.
The second part consists of 7 lectures and introduces the principals of project management of engineering activities. The
topics have a primary focus on planning and organization and draws on ideas presented in part A.
The third part consists of 6 lectures and concentrates on the application of business finance and micro-economic concepts to
specific civil engineering problems. Topics areas are examined with reference to civil engineering case examples.
The fourth part consists of 11 lectures, and links together legal and professional issues impacting on engineering activities.
SITE VISITS
LECTURES
Lectures will be given Fridays. As the lecturer Mr McMahon is a visiting lecturer, he will not be available for all Fridays. Mr
McMahon will advise students at lectures as to those Fridays when lecturers will be presented.

Students need to attend one of six workshops. The six workshops are conducted 9am-5pm in the Civil Engineering
Seminar Room Bldg 50 Rm C406, one on each of the following dates in the table below. Write-ups, 1500 to 2000 in
length, from the practical exercises conducted on these workshops are due by dates in table below. (Value 25%).
