Spiders are not insects! They are actually arachnids - invertebrates (animals without backbones) that
have eight legs and which inject venom. Spiders are found on every continent except Antarctica. There are
over 44,000 known kinds of spiders. Spiders are found in every kind of habitat and are often found in homes!
Spiders are unique among animals in that many spin webs out of silk. The webs trap insects and other
prey to be eaten later. Larger spiders, such as wolf spiders, huntsman, and tarantulas attack prey rather than
spin webs. One spider that was recently discovered even flings itself at prey like a slingshot! Most spiders eat
insects, but tarantulas and larger spiders will eat small lizards and mammals as well.
Many people fear spide
rs. In fact, a fear of spiders has its own name: Arachnophobia! Most spiders, however, are totally harmless to
humans and are actually beneficial because they eat insect pests. Even the largest tarantula in existence, the
Goliath Bird-eating Tarantula is harmless to humans. A tarantula bite is said to be about as painful as a bee
sting. Some spiders, however, such as the Black Widow Spider, are dangerous to humans. Bites from these
spiders usually require immediate medical attention. (Source: mrnussbaum.com)

Sometimes referred to as “rainforests under the sea”, coral reefs are colorful, exploding with life, and
are some of the most impressive sights on Earth. They are complex and exciting ecosystems that together
host around a quarter of all sea life. A fear for the future, however is that rising ocean temperatures will lead
to the loss of many of our coral reefs forever.
So what exactly is a coral reef? Think of it as an underwater city made of coral. To the human eye, coral
can look like a lifeless rock. However, it is really the skeleton of an animal called a “coral polyp”. When a coral
polyp dies, it leaves its skeleton behind. Then, a new polyp grows on top of the old one. Over time, this
process builds large coral reefs. These reefs are mostly founded in shallow tropical waters and they support
lots of aquatic life. They are like megacities under the water. They are so busy that they support about 25%
of all marine life, despite covering less than 1% of the ocean floor. Some researchers estimate coral reefs are
home to over one million species of plants and animals!
A harsh reality is that much of the world‟s coral is at risk of extinction. Irresponsible fishing, pollution
and climate change are killing off coral reefs at an incredible pace. Scientists say we have already lost 27% of
the world‟s coral, and warn that 60% of the world‟s coral could die within the next 25 years. That is a pretty
frighten prediction!
As scientists and politicians work together to try and figure out way to save our coral reefs, you should
do your part to help to. Simple things like cleaning up trash at the beach and conserving fresh water can help,
but preventing rapid climate change is the best way to save coral reefs. Like many environmental issues, coral
reefs depend on us changing our lifestyles for the best. „
