An DuongVuong High School [ENGLISH 12 – MOCK TEST 1- (09/04/2017)]

Polar bears are in danger of dying out. (31)_______ some other endangered animals, it's not hunters that are the
problem, it's climate change. Since 1979, the ice cap at the Arctic Circle where the polar bears has reduced in size.
By about 30 per cent. The temperature in the Arctic has slowly been (32)______ and this is (33)_______ the sea ice
to melt, endangering the polar bears' home. The polar bears' main sources of food are the different types of seals
found in the Arctic. They catch them by waiting next to the air holes seals have made in the ice. (34)_______ the
bears are very strong swimmers, they could never catch seals in water. This means that the bears really do rely on
the ice to hunt.
Polar bears also need sea ice to travel. They can cover a huge territory and often swim from one part of the ice to
another. They have been (35)_______ to swim up to 100 km, but when there is less ice, they may have to swim
further and this can prove fatal to the bears. A number of bears have drown in the last few years and scientists
believe that it is because they were not able to reach more ice before they became too tired and couldn't swim any
further.

Communication in general is process of sending and receiving messages that enables humans to share
knowledge, attitudes, and skills. Although we usually identify communication with speech, communication is
composed of two dimensions - verbal and nonverbal.
Nonverbal communication has been defined as communication without words. It includes apparent behaviors
such as facial expressions, eyes, touching, tone of voice, as well as less obvious messages such as dress, posture and
spatial distance between two or more people.
Activity or inactivity, words or silence all have message value: they influence others and these others, in turn,
respond to these communications and thus they are communicating.
Commonly, nonverbal communication is learned shortly after birth and practiced and refined throughout a 9A.
person's lifetime. Children first learn nonverbal expressions by watching and imitating, much as they learn verbal
9B
skills.
Young children know far more than they can verbalize and are generally more adept at reading nonverbal
cues than adults are because of their limited verbal skills and their recent reliance on the nonverbal to communicate.
As children develop verbal skills, nonverbal channels of communication do' not cease to exist although become
entwined in the total communication process.
6. According to the writer, ________.
A. Nonverbal language is only used by the deaf and the mute.
B. One cannot communicate in both verbal and .nonverbal language.
C. Those who can listen and talk should not use nonverbal language.
D. People communicate with both verbal and nonverbal language.
7. Which is not included in nonverbal communication?
A. words B. spatial distance C. facial expressions D. tone of voice

C. even silence has message value THẬM CHÍ SỰ IM LẶNG CÓ GIÁ TRỊ
D. touching is not accepted in communicating

Today we take electricity for granted and perhaps we do not realize just how useful this discovery has been.
Steam was the first invention that replaced wind power. It was used to drive engines and was passed through
pipes and radiators to warm rooms. Petrol mixed with air was the next invention that provided power.
Exploded in a cylinder, it drove a motor engine. Beyond these simple and direct uses, those forms have not much
adaptability. On the other hand, we make use of electricity in thousands of ways. From the powerful voltages that
42 C
drive our electric trains to the tiny current needed to work a simple calculator, and from the huge electric magnet in
43 steel works that can lift 10 tons to the tiny electric magnet in a doorbell, all are powered by electricity. An electric42 B
current can be made with equal ease to heat a huge mass of molten metal in a furnace or to boil a jug for a cup of
coffee. Other than atomic energy, which has not as yet been harnessed to the full, electricity is the greatest power in
the world. It is flexible, and so adaptable for any task for which it is wanted . It travels so easily and with incredible
speed along wires or conductors that it can be supplied instantly over vast distances. To generate electricity, huge
turbines or generators must be turned. In Australia they use coal or water to drive this machinery. When dams are
built, falling water is used to drive the turbines without polluting the atmosphere with smoke from coal. Atomic power
is used in several countries but there is always the fear of an accident. A tragedy once occurred at Chernobyl, in
Ukraine, at an atomic power plant used to make electricity. The reactor leaked, which caused many deaths through
radiation. Now scientists are examining new ways of creating electricity without harmful effects to the
environment. They may harness the tides as they flow in and out of bays. Most importantly, they hope to trap
sunlight more efficiently. We do use solar heaters for swimming pools but as yet improvement in the capacity of the
solar cells to create more current is necessary. When this happens, electric cars will be viable and the world will rid
itself of the toxic gases given off by trucks and cars that burn fossil fuels.
