Set 1
Good morning/afternoon. You have read text 1 silently. Let’s begin.

You have been asked to tell a story for a school programme. You have prepared an
interesting story which you would like to share with your friends. Read the text aloud.

Tyler and I were trekking in the jungle. We suddenly heard a guzzling

sound. We felt uneasy and wondered what to do next. The next minute, we
quickly hid behind some bushes. From the bush hidden by the tall grass, we
could not see much what was in front.

I looked at the tall tree where the sound seemed to have come from.
Tyler could not bear the agony of waiting. He just wanted to find what had
happened to the animal that had made the sound. He rose slowly. This time a
loud snort shattered the silence. It was the grunt of a wild boar. Then it stopped
and there was silence again.

For a split second, we saw the grass move. Tyler aimed his rifle in the
direction and fired. However, he missed. By then the bushes were moving
even more. We had the same thought, “It’s coming at us!”

I grabbed hold of Tyler’s rifle and fired desperately. I took another shot
and the beast lay sprawled on the ground. At the same time, I saw Tyler
sprawling on the ground. He thought that I had shot him. I was thinking, “Silly
fellow!”

Set 2
Good morning/afternoon. You have read text 2 silently. Let’s begin.

Your have been asked to give a speech on ‘Success’ during your school assembly. Read the
text aloud.

Good morning teachers and students. I am here to talk about ‘The Quest for
Success’.

In the quest for success, the question that often begs to be answered is
whether success is a matter of chance or choice? According to the great
English playwright, William Shakespeare, ‘It is not in the stars to hold our
destiny but in ourselves’. In my opinion, that is precisely true.

Therefore, what does it really mean to regard success as being within

ourselves? I think what it means is that success can only be achieved if there is
a determination. Without determination we would fail to overcome the
obstacles that come along our way. In the quest for success, there will
undoubtedly be hurdles along the way – hurdles that we ought to clear so that
the goals become clearer. We must believe in ourselves to overcome the
challenges that come our way.

In the pursuit to success, every successful person – scientist like Thomas Alva
Edison, social workers like Mother Theresa, politicians like our Father of
Independence Tunku Abdul Rahman and sport personalities like Lee Chong
Wei- overcome great odds to achieve what they wanted. It was their single-
minded determination and hardwork that made them succeed. Let us learn
from these role models who are icons of success. Thank you.

Set 3
Good morning/afternoon. You have read text 3 silently. Let’s begin.

You have been asked to share the following article during your school assembly. Read the
text aloud.

Reading is an excellent way of passing our leisure time. However, it can be

problematic if we find the reading material too difficult for our level.

When we read something, it is likely that we encounter unfamiliar

words. Hence, the first step to decipher the meaning of the word is to either
take a mental note of the word or make a pencil mark in the margin, and read
on. It is important to keep reading to prevent further interruption to your
reading process. You can usually learn enough about a word from its context
or from contextual clues. Remember that it is important to go on enjoying the
book than to find out how the dictionary defines every new word.

If you still cannot make out the meanings of some words even after
completing the passage, you should make an intelligent guess based on what
you have learned from reading the whole passage. Another look at the context
may confirm or improve your guess.

Of course, when all fails, you should use the dictionary. Your first aim
when you have located the word is to find the meaning which fits the context.
With a good dictionary you can look up the meaning of a word you see or
hear, check the spelling of a word, find out how to pronounce a word and find
examples of sentences using the word.
