A Detailed Lesson Plan

in English 7

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
a. identify logical connectors that signal chronological and logical sequence and summation;
b. link sentences using logical connectors that signal chronological and logical sequence and summation (EN7G-
III-a-1:) ; and
c. appreciate the lesson by constructing a process using logical connectors and present it to the class.
II. Subject Matter

1. Greetings
“Good Morning everybody!” Good Morning, Ma’am!
“Kindly take your seat.” Thank you, Ma’am!
“Alright! So, are you excited on what we are going to Yes, we are!

“Please make sure that you are seating on your proper

seat or else, you will be marked absent.”
3. Checking of Attendance
“Is everybody present today?” “Yes, Ma’am!”
4. Review
“Can someone give a review on what we did last Last meeting we finalized the compilation of our
meeting? quizzes Ma’am.

“Good!”

5. Motivation
Are you fond of eating cookies? Yes, Ma’am!

I have here the ingredients used in making cookies.

You don’t just mix all the ingredients together in one
bowl to make a cookie. There are steps that you have
to follow to be able to successfully bake cookies.

So the recipe of the cookies is presented to you and I

want you to take note of the words that were
underlined.

What then are the importance of the words in carrying Following steps brings you to a good outcome.
out steps accordingly?

Very good!
What will happen if we will remove the underlined We will not be able to understand the steps in
words? making cookies Ma’am!

B. Presentation of New Lesson

Our lesson for today is all about logical connectors.
“So what comes into your mind when we say ‘logical’?” Clear reasoning, Ma’am!

“Very good! Logical means to be able to give reasons or

thoughts in an orderly manner.”

“Who here have experienced having a lot of ideas about

a certain topic but cannot organize or connect these?” (Students raise their hands)

“Can you share his or her experience then?” Ma’am, whenever our teacher asks us to construct
a paragraph about a certain topic, we tend to have
lots of ideas in mind but we cannot connect and
express it.
“Okay. Thank you for that sharing! Don’t worry because
for today we are going to discuss logical connectors that
will help you in relating your ideas.”

C. Development of the New Lesson

“To further understand, logical connectors are essential in
writing and speaking because these are used to show
relationship between ideas in sentences and in paragraphs.
Logical connectors are like bridges between your
paragraphs.

What do you think why logical connectors are compared Logical connectors are compared to a bridge
to bridges? because just like a bridge, it helps us link and
arrange our ideas so that the readers will
understand our paragraph.”
Correct!

Furthermore, logical connectors also are useful in

achieving good coherence in your writing.

Can someone define coherence? It refers to the linking of ideas in a logical

sequence or order. Also, it refers to the
organization of sentences and ideas in your essay
working together as a whole within paragraphs
Correct!
Moving on, logical connectors are categorized into two.

I. Connectors that signal chronological and logical

sequence
“Can you please read what is showed in the slide?” (Students read the logical connectors presented)
Numerical
Chronological Logical
 in the  initially
(first)  secondly
place
 first…
 second…
“Thank you. So, when we say chronological in terms of
writing composition, it means that the things happened
or came to be are arranged in order. And as I have said
a while ago, logical is when you give your ideas in a
reasonable or proper way.

Examples:
 First, we would like to take this opportunity
to thank all of you for coming to this event.
 In the first place, we should decide on one
plan only or else we will not win the
competition.
Second, these connectors are used to begin a sentence
or a paragraph and also to show the sequence of the
event happened.

Beginning
Chronological Logical
 at first  to start with
 to start with  to begin with
 to begin with  for a start
 for a start  initially
 initially

Example:
 For a start, I found it difficult to deal with my
new environment.
 At first, my doctor thought I have dengue but
further testing proved I didn’t.

Next, if we continue a certain paragraph, the following

connectors are used to resume the happenings.
Continuation
Chronological Logical
 previously  next
 after this  then
 afterwards
 eventually
 subsequently
 before this
Examples:
 Write your name on the space provided.
Afterwards, read the instructions carefully.
 Then answer the questions properly

On the other hand, if you are already to conclude your

paragraph, you can use the second column (connectors)
to help you end your composition.
Conclusion
Chronological Logical
 finally  at last
 eventually  last but not the
 at last least
 in the end  as a final point
 lastly
 to conclude (with)

Example:
 It was such a long travel. Finally, we got the
chance to have a glance on the beautiful rice
terraces.
 After eight months passed and his broken heart
healed, George eventually, started dating girls
again.

Before moving on to the next category, let’s combine all

the connectors from numerical and beginning, to
continuation, and conclusion with this quick activity. I
will begin first the process on how to plant seedlings
then you continue it. Understood?
Yes, Ma’am!
 For a start, let’s prepare the paraphernalia in
planting. Student 1: Second, get the trays or pot.
Student 2: Initially, fill the seed tray with seed
compost.
Student 3: Then, moisten the surface of the
compost.
Student 4: Afterwards, sprinkle the seeds evenly
over the compost.
Student 5: Cover the seed tray eventually.
Student 6: After this, place the seed tray in a
warm place.
Student 7: Subsequently, uncover the seedlings
once they germinate.
Student 8: Next, transplant the seedlings and keep
transplanted seedlings in the shade.
Student 9: Last but not the least, plant out into
the flowering position.

Very good!

What then is the importance of putting these words in Student 1: They connect what issues in regard to
the sentence or paragraph? Why do we need to put it? when they occur.
Student 2: Ma’am logical connectors are
important for the readers to be able to understand
your composition.
Any questions? None, Ma’am.

Is it clear? Yes, Ma’am!

Okay, if there are no questions let us proceed to the

second category.

“Kindly read the table?”

II. Connectors that signal summation

General Review of Effect/Result
Main Idea or and Summary
Purpose
 in  as has  consequently
conclusion been  given (all)
 in mentioned these options
summary  as has  hence
 to sum up been noted  so
 to  as I have  then
summarize said  therefore
 as was  thus
previously
stated

Basing from the connectors you have read, what does Summation means you give a short explanation
summation means? on the composition you made starting from
introduction, body, and conclusion.
You are correct!

As you can see, connectors that signal summation are

divided into three. These are general, review of main idea
and effect/result. They are all connected with each other
but they are just categorized through their appropriate
functions.
In general, these connectors are used when you give the
most important information about your paragraph.
General
 in conclusion
 in summary
 to sum up
 to summarize

Examples:
 In conclusion, walking is a cheap, safe, enjoyable,
and readily available form of exercise.
 To sum up, I hope the preceding arguments have
convinced you of the need for action.
Moreover, if you want to emphasize or go over with the
key points you mentioned in your paragraph, these help
you connect the ideas you want to emphasize.
Review of Main Idea or Purpose
 as has been mentioned
 as has been noted
 as I have said
 as was previously stated

Example:
 As I have said, water the plants as much as
possible so that they will not be withered.
 As has been noted from the guest speaker’s
speech, “Do not give up and continue fighting.”
Effect/Result
and Summary
 consequently
 given (all)
these
options
 hence
 so
 then
 therefore
 thus

After reviewing the main idea or purpose, you are now

going to give its effect or result of your composition

summarize the main ideas you have pointed out using

these following logical connectors.
Summary of Points
all in all
altogether
in all
on the whole
over

Examples:
 All in all, life is hard that is why there is such a nice
reward at the end of it.
 On the whole, the short film entitled “Tokwifi” is
one of a kind story that was shot here in Bontoc.

Finally, if you want to give a short description of your

paragraph, you can use the following connectors.
Condensation
briefly
in a word
in short
to be brief
to make a long story short
to put it briefly
Examples: Student 1: To begin with, prepare the things you

stabs. Student 5: Next, fill up the glue bottle with warm
water and pour it in a separate bowl.
D. Exercises/Drills Student 6: After this, add 1 teaspoon of borax.
To see if you understood the lesson, let’s have an activity. Student 7: Then slowly add 4 teaspoons of borax
solution into the glue mixture. Keep mixing until

Watch the process on how to make a slime then Student 8: Afterwards, knead the slime.
afterwards restate the process again by inserting Student 6: Finally, we now have a stretchy slime.
logical connectors.

Yes, Ma’am!

At first, our teacher showed us the process on how

to bake cookies then she introduced us the new
lesson “Logical Connectors”. Initially, this is
divided into two in which these are Connectors
that signal chronological and logical sequence
and connectors that signal summation.
Afterwards, we came to learn the different

continue it with the use of logical connectors. As a result, we were more enlightened about the
lesson. All in all, logical connectors are very
E. Generalization useful in writing and speaking.
Did you understand the lesson?

Using logical connectors, can someone summarize the Logical connectors are beneficial for they
lesson that we tackled? organize the different ideas for the readers to be
able to understand your paragraph.

Very good answer!

What are the importance then of learning logical
connectors?

Correct!

IV. Evaluation
You will be grouped into five (5) and each will construct a process using at least 10 logical connectors. After constructing,
present the process to the class.
