sentences? How about the middle sentences?

2. Discussion

What is a paragraph?
Is a group of sentences organized to discuss a topic? In fact,
the main rule of a paragraph writing is to focus one idea or
topic.
(The students are going to listen,
Question: and participate for the entire
 Do you think long sentences make good paragraph? discussion.)

Long paragraph doesn’t mean it is a good paragraph. An effective

paragraph has one idea or topic. As we go on with our topic we will know
if a paragraph is effective or not.

Parts of a Paragraph

1. Topic sentence- It presents the topic of the paragraph. It is the

most important sentence in the paragraph. That is why it is also
called a “controlling idea” of a paragraph. It is usually comes at
the very start of the paragraph, but not all the time.

“Based on the given sentence strip, who can go to the board and
identify the topic sentence? Paste it on the given organizer.

Question:

 Class, do you think your classmate’s answer is correct?

Why do you say so?

“Very good! Now, let’s go to the second part.

2. Supporting sentences- It is the body of the paragraph. It gives a

reader details to understand a main idea, or evidence to show why
a claim is true or correct. You will find supporting sentences in the
middle of a paragraph – after the topic sentence, and before a
concluding sentence.
“Now who can go to the board and identify the supporting
sentences?”

Question:

 Is it correct? What made you say that these are the

supporting sentences?

“Very good! Next, let’s talk about the third or the last part of a
paragraph.”

3. Concluding sentences- The last sentence in a paragraph. Its job is

to summarize the main idea of the paragraph. It comes after all the
details have been included in the body or supporting sentences.

“Now who can identify the concluding sentence?”

Question:
 Is it correct? Why do you think that this is the
concluding sentence?

“Very good! Do you understand now the paragraph and its parts?
Do you have any questions?”

Yes, ma’am.
