CONTENT
Text and Context Connections (Critical Reading)

CONTENT STANDARD
The learner understands the relationship of a written text and the context in which it was developed.

PERFORMANCE STANDARD
The learner writes a 1000-word critique of a selected text on the basis of its claim/s, context, and properties as a
written material.

LEARNING COMPETENCY
The learner explains critical reading as looking for ways of thinking.

I.OBJECTIVES
o define critical reading as way of thinking;
o distinguish the critical reading strategies used by critical readers;
o explains the importance of critical reading in their daily lives.

II. SUBJECT- MATTER


Topic: Critical Reading as Ways of Thinking
Materials: Laptop (Powerpoint), Handouts, Paper and Ballpen
References: CG, Textbook, Internet
Strategies: HOTS, Collaborative Learning, Brainstorming

Motivation
The teacher would ask the class if ever they received messages that say they won money from uncertain
organization or company and asking for their personal information.
Guide Questions:
1. Have you ever received messages saying that you win a certain amount of money in a contest?
2. What did you do when you received this kind of messages?
3. Did you believe easily? Why or Why not?

A. Activity
The class is divided into 5 groups and tasked to share a scenario or experience where they used critical thinking.
Each group must assign a leader to represent the group and is given 10 minutes for the preparation and 2 minutes
for the presentation.
Guide Questions:
1. Why do you think we have to think critically?
2. Why is thinking not enough?

B. Analysis
Students are asked to look for and list down the ideas that are connected to ‘thinking’ that they may find in the
puzzle that will lead to the discussion of the topic.
C. Abstraction
The teacher with the participation of the students would discuss about critical reading and its strategies.

D. Application
Students are tasked to answer the quiz based on the discussion on critical reading and its strategies.

IV. EVALUATION
In a ½ sheet of paper, students are tasked to write a 100- word essay on the importance of critical reading in their
lives. A rubric is to be used to rate their output.

V. AGREEMENT
The students are instructed to research on claims and its types.
