Title: PURPOSEFUL WRITING IN THE DISCIPLINES AND FOR PROFESSIONS

Hello dear high school learners, welcome to our new lesson on resume and application for
college admission.

A resume is a summary that highlights one’s background, skills and qualifications, and
capabilities which is sent to employers for review. It serves as your personal marketing brochure with
the goal of gaining the employer’s attention and to giving them the information they need to bring
you to the next step in the hiring process, an interview.

A typical resume considers the following elements and factors.

1. Contact information – It refers to the Job seeker's name, address, phone numbers, and email.

2. Objective or Summary of Qualifications – The relevant and impressive qualifications for

the desired position, presented at the top of the page, directly under the contact information.

3. Work History – The present and/or past employment, including dates, companies, job titles,
and relevant skills and accomplishments.

4. Education – The highest level of education completed.

5. Who Needs a Resume? – Somebody who has the desire to apply for a certain job whose
skills and strengths will convince his future employer of his fitness to the job.

6. Purpose of a Resume - The resume's sole purpose is to give an interview. It tells the future
employer about one’s qualification and what it takes for the job.

Types of Resumes

Many kinds of resume templates are available, but the top three formats are:

1. Chronological: With work history listed in reverse chronological order (most recent position
first, oldest position last), this traditional type of resume focuses on titles and dates.
Written by: NORIKO Y. DAPII (T-II) Baliwasan Senior High School Stand-Alone
2

2. Functional: This less-common format focuses on skills and accomplishments, rather than
dates and titles. It divides your qualifications into functional categories, such as
Administrative, Marketing, or Project Management.

3. Combination/Hybrid: Featuring a mix of elements from both of the above resume types, this
format is the most versatile for individual scenarios.

Top 10 Features Must Include in Resume

1. Communication Skills – This is the ability to communicate well to a potential employer.

2. Openness - This means openness to new ideas, new processes, new people and so on.

3. Creativity - This is the ability to engage in non-linear thinking or thinking outside the box to
use a nice cliché.

4. Cultural Experience - Denotes what experiences you have had with people from other
countries and cultures. This can come in handy when a company needs to deal with and even
negotiate with international partners.

5. Positivity – It is the use of upbeat language and dropping hints of what a happy camper you are
in the office.

6. Commitment - This involves dedicating one’s self in a company.

7. Enthusiasm - This is all about what lengths you go to in order to further your career. Extra-
curricular activities can benefit your potential new employer.

8. Integrity – This requires for customers and co-workers to trust and work successfully with
you.

9. Team spirit - Team spirit is more than simply playing, it’s actually taking the initiative and
activating a group of people and creating closer bonds.

10. Community service - This is about you making a difference and being able to tell the world
how you did it.

Here is an example of a resume:

Components of the College Application

General admissions application requirements can include the following elements:
 Application form - Carefully read and fill out the application form. Do not be afraid to ask
questions about anything that is unclear. A simple mistake can mean the difference between
getting into a college or not.

 Essay (or other writing sample) - The essay is one of the most important part of your
application, and your chance to shine. Colleges are interested in how well you express
yourself in writing.

 Transcript - Your transcript shows the high school(s) you attended, courses taken and your
grades, as well as your Regents exam grades, cumulative grade point average (GPA), SAT,
SAT subject tests and ACT scores, and school attendance. Colleges use this information to
determine if you satisfy admissions and eligibility requirements. It is also used to determine if
you met high school graduation requirements.

 School profile - The profile paints a picture of your school for the admissions advisers and
offers information about your school's environment.

 Test scores - These include your scores from the SAT or ACT. Colleges vary on whether or
not they also consider the SAT essay when they review applications.

 Recommendation forms - Ask for recommendations from people who know you well --
teachers, guidance counsellors, employers or any adult who can comment, favorably and in
depth, on your skills, maturity, integrity and personality. Be sure to give them the forms well
in advance of the application deadlines.

 List of activities - This list should include all the extracurricular activities you participated in
throughout high school.
