Universal Design for Learning (UDL): This is an awesome resource for English Learners. This Instructional
Software allows for the students to watch videos of the same content the whole class is learning about but
having it translated to their native language. This helps their transition and becoming more comfortable with
academic language in the classroom. This is also a helpful tool for student’s families. It allows the families at
home to see what students are working on in the classroom, it provides them an opportunity to also support
the student if they are confused about something. Students with BrainPop are given the opportunity to watch
the videos as often as they want, this allows for them to have more reinforcement of the content.

Lesson idea implementation:
In this lesson students will be learning how to add and subtract fractions when referring to the same whole. I
will introduce this lesson by asking students what we already know about fractions. I will hope students will
say there is a numerator and a denominator and then talk about how the numerator is how many pieces and
the denominator is the size of the pieces. This will be a review of what we have been learning and the
building blocks for the lesson we are going to learn today. After we go over that I will ask the students if they
think we could add and subtract fractions like we do with whole numbers. Once this discussion is over and I
feel students are engaged I will show the video on BrainPop of adding and subtracting fractions, which is 4
minutes long. After the students watch the video I will ask if students have questions on adding and
subtracting fractions.

Once that is over we will start our lesson. There will be four different centers going on throughout the room
and each group will get a chance to rotate to all of them. On the SmartBoard the students will get the
opportunity to play the games on BrainPop that consist of Refraction, and Slice Fractions. This station will
allow students to have practice with adding and subtracting fractions in a fun game setting. Another station
will be students completing the quiz on BrainPop called review. This will allow me as a teacher to see how
much the student understood from the lesson and what students might need more support. The next station
will be a station where the group gets a list of math vocabulary words and they can make flashcards of them,
this allows students to have more practice with the academic language which in further helps them with
success on the content. The last station will be the students making a movie of them demonstrating how to
add and subtract fractions, the instructions will be for them to turn in to the teachers and explain to someone
how to add and subtract fractions. They will be given materials to record with and they will be given white
boards, paper, etc. The movie station will be differentiated based on the level the problem is. At the end of
the lesson I will ask if any groups want to show their movie they made while they were at the center. This will
allow for me to give feedback or ask questions for how they did something, and also allow peers to see how
you could demonstrate adding and subtracting problems in a different way.

Reflective Practice:
These activities will extend student learning because it allows them to work with fractions in different ways. It
is not just drill and practice it allows for them to explain their reasoning and become comfortable with adding
and subtracting fractions. Something that could further this lesson is putting the videos the students made on
to my class blog for their parents to see.
