I Introduction

Students are the next generation who will take the responsibilities to succeed the national
developments. Entering the age of globalization and the high technology era nowadays,
analysis and improvement from all fields are required to be appllied and maintained in order
to achieve the desired objectives. On the other hand, skills and professionalism require
training and a genuine effort. Thus, the industrial world is a place where students can apply
their knowledge in a real world. Practical work is a golden opportunity for students to
practice their ability and understand the real problem in the industry under the guidance of
various experts in the field.

School of Physics, which is under Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) offer five courses to
students, such as:
1) Geophysics
2) Engineering Physics
3) Pure Physics
4) Applied Physics
5) Medical Physics

As one of the sub-majors, the Geophysics Program must be able to produce graduates who
are experts in their fields and are able to apply their knowledge gained from university.
Besides, to improve and enhance high quality of human resources among university
students, the students are suggested to do Industrial Training. The main purpose of the
Industrial Training is to apply their knowledge and analyze the theories that are given in
class. More importantly, this training will enhance and improve students skill set which help
in building confidence of the students leading to the development of students into
professionals in their specialized area.

By implementing the internship program at PT. Pertamina (Persero), it is expected that we

will be able to apply science and new technologies from the industry that were not exposed

before in educational institutions. This will be very beneficial for the development of our
insight. The practical work referred in the description above has become a part of the
education curriculum at the Universiti Sains Malaysia, specifically in the School of Physics.
Therefore, the author as a student from the School of Physics is very eager to carry out the
Industrial Training at PT. Pertamina (Persero). This is a great opportunity for the author to
participate in understanding and experiencing the working environment directly. In addition,
the author is open to work in any field that PT. Pertamina (Persero) has to offer, as far as it
relates to the application of geophysics.

II Background

The important issue on how to find oil and gas resource, like other exploration activities,
such as mining, it is necessary to efficiently find the reservoir that has suitable resources.
Generally, the early stages of hydrocarbon exploration consist of surface survey and well
surveys, of which surface surveys are further categorized into preliminary survey with
interpretation and analysis of aerial photography and satellite imagery, volcano study/
volcanology, geological surveys, geo-chemical surveys, and geophysical exploration.
Geophysical data that are used are from the application of seismic, resistivity, gravity,
magnetic and magnetotelluric surveys.

Academic theory and industrial field are the media to improve and apply new technology
to find the appropriate way how to relate what we have learned. In addition to fulfilling
academic obligations, these activities are expected to increase knowledge about things that
happened in the industry so that students have views about the purpose and direction of
the development of technology and ability to evolve creatively in order to understand the
issues raised in the world of industry. Therefore, to better understand the stages of
hydrocarbon exploration, the author intend to take part in practical work at PT Pertamina
(Persero).

III Objective

There are several objectives of this industrial training or internship, such as:
1) To complete the university requirement for industrial training subject as an elective
course in the School of Physics.
2) To provide exposure to working-life for students nearing their completion of
undergraduate study.
3) To strengthen the relationship between the University and the private and public
sectors.
4) To identify the general reality theory about application and implementation that has
been learned during class hours.

IV Industrial Training Implementation
