Types of Cookies

The word “cookie” originated from the Dutch word ‘Koekje’, which means ‘a small piece of cake’.
Cookies were originally made from cake mixtures; compressed into small pieces and baked in the
stove to measure the latter’s temperature. Cookies can be classified by its texture and the various
baking methods. There are 6 types.

1. Dropped Cookies

This type of cookie is most widely-known and can be baked easily. Due to the mixture’s runny texture,
it can be shaped by simply squeezing the mixture through a pastry bag or depositing small chunks of
the dough onto the baking sheet. When baked, they either flatten out or take on round shape, with a
crispy and crumbly texture. You can add other ingredients of your choice to create your preferred
cookie flavour such as butter, peanut or coffee cookies.

2. Pressed Cookies

This lovely and delectable type of cookie is made from very rich ingredients; therefore, the dough is
quite cohesive. It can be flattened using a roller. Using a cookie press or pastry tube, you can form
different shapes like flowers or animals. Examples of this cookie are Cashew nut cookie and toffee
cookie.
3. Molded Cookies

These are dry in texture and contain high fat content, making them suitable to be shaped by hand into
figurines such as stars, hearts or animals. You can also decorate the surface with icing.

4. Rolled Cookies

The texture of the rolled cookie dough is harder than any other types so that it can be easily rolled out
into thin slices. After which, a cookie press or pastry tube is used to construct the shape. The baked
cookies are crumbly and not too sweet. Examples include lime cookies and biscuits.

5. Bar Cookies

Its texture can be soft like a cake, crispy or sticky. The ingredients of this cookie type are different
from the usual as they are found in both cake and cookie recipes. They are prepared by setting the
dough in a cookie pan to level it out. They are baked and quickly cut into squares while they’re still
warm. An example of this type: brownies.
6. Refrigerated Cookies

This type of cookie is prepared by rolling out thin slices of dough, shaping them into long rolls, and
subsequently wrapping them in cellophane and refrigerating them. Once cold, the dough can be sliced
into various shapes, and garnished with peanuts, almonds or dried fruits. They can be kept for months
and baked when you want to eat them. Examples are cheese, pinwheel and peanut cookies.
