Q.No. Answer all questions Marks

1. For a two machine power system, explain with the help of plots the transient stability margin a) [5]
without compensation b) with ideal midpoint shunt compensation. Make suitable assumptions.
2. Derive the expression for the transmitted power and the reactive power for a four segmented [5]
transmission line. Explain this with the help of circuit diagram, phasor diagram and P-δ plots.
3. Explain the a) functional control scheme b) functional logic for the implementation of transient free [5]
switching c) the losses vs VAR output characteristic for TSC-TCR type static VAR generator.
4. In a FC-TCR type VAR Generator, the firing angle is 45○, maximum value of applied sinusoidal [5]
voltage is 230 V, the inductance of the TCR circuit is 3 mH. a) Calculate the capacitance such that
overall VAR from the generator is zero. b) Also calculate the firing angle when the overall VAR is
capacitive and is half of the maximum capacitive VAR.
5. In a TSC circuit, the capacitance is 10 µF and the inductance is 1014 mH. If the amplitude of applied [5]
sinusoidal voltage is 1.0 p.u. a) Calculate the amplitude of the voltage across the capacitor and the
reactor when the TSC is in the on state. Derive these results. b) Also explain and show the waveforms
for the voltages across all the components when TSC is in the off state.
6. Two synchronous machines are connected by a lossless transmission line and the voltages at the two [5]
ends are 1.2∠5○ and 1.0∠0○ respectively. The reactance is 0.8 p.u. a) Calculate the active power and
the reactive power at the receiving end and derive the expressions used. b) If a voltage of 0.1 p.u. is
injected perpendicular to the line current, calculate the percentage change in the active power. Draw
relevant phasor diagrams.
