Q1. Calculate the firing delay angle and the value of the inductance used in the TCR circuit when applied voltage is
230cos(⍵t) , frequency is 50 Hz, the amplitude of the fundamental component and 5th harmonic component of
the reactor current are 163.23 Amp and 12.14 Amp respectively. Also sketch the applied voltage and the
current in the reactor after obtaining the values of the inductance and the firing angle. [10]
Q2.a) Explain and sketch the voltage waveforms across all the elements and the current waveform when the TSC
circuit is in the on state. b) Also explain and sketch all the waveforms for cycles of current when the TSC goes from
off to on state with capacitor voltage =1.0 pu and -1.0 pu. [10]
Q3. Explain very clearly with the help of relevant figures and mathematical equations, how the transient stability is
enhanced for a two machine two line power system using shunt compensation. The fault is considered to have
occurred right at the middle of this two line system. Make other suitable assumptions. [10]
Q4. Explain the a) functional control scheme b) functional logic for the implementation of transient free switching in
TSC c) Explain the operating V-I area of the FC-TCR type VAR Generator. [10]
Q5. In the FC- TCR circuit, the amplitude of the current in the capacitor is given by 114.21 Amp, Applied Voltage is
230sin(⍵t), the frequency is 50 Hz, the firing angle is 10○. Calculate a)the value of the inductance and b) the
capacitance C, such that the net VAR is zero from this FC-TCR circuit c) Also plot the reactive power drawn by
the inductor and the capacitor against the reactive power demand. [10]
Q6.Derive the expression for the transmitted power and the reactive power for a four segmented transmission line.
