Title of the Project: The Comparative study on the evolution of recreational

preferences of Filipinos for the past decade.

A. Rationale
Changes are constant in an individual’s life. Our environment is continuously
changing due to the effects of cultural, economic and social needs which will
definitely influence people’s behaviour and way of life. As people’s lifestyles
change, their recreational preferences also change. Recreation is defined as any
activity done for the sole purpose of relaxation and pleasure.

A study done in 2010 at the Ankara University in Turkey found out that
people preferred to spend their leisure time outdoors. However, as technology
evolved and the concept of digital social media was introduced the preference of
outdoor and active recreation quickly evolved into the preference of indoor and
sedentary recreation. Majority of the participants responded that they prefer to
spend their leisure time inside shopping malls rather than staying in an open area
like parks.

In the early 2000’s, most Filipinos preferred to spend their down time with
either their friends or families and go out. When smart phones, computers and
social media platforms were introduced to the public the old preference was
quickly change in to Filipinos spending their leisure time alone and on their
gadgets.

This study will focus on the comparison of Filipinos’ recreational preferences

in the past and in the present in order to find a pattern of behaviour and to know
how the change in the environment affects that pattern.
