Dear Employer,
I write this letter to fully endorse Megan McCaffrey as an educator who will
strengthen your faculty. Megan was an outstanding student in my course, CEP 803A,
Assessment of Children with Mild Disabilities. Megan completed her undergraduate
degree from our Special Education program in May 2019 and was taking my course as
a teacher intern in Fall 2019. This course is the first graduate-level course the interns
take and is one of the most conceptually-challenging and time-intensive courses
required in the Special Education program at Michigan State University. While taking
this course and two other graduate level courses, Megan was also in the midst of
writing lesson plans and lead teaching for the first time a full case-load in Special
Education in a high school. Given the novelty of the situation, the intensive time
demands, and the rigor of the course, it is very impressive when students achieve a 4.0
grade (on a 4-point GPA scale) in the class.
Not only did Megan achieve a 4.0 in my class, she also independently learned
and implemented an evidence-based reading intervention for a student case. Megan
worked with a student who had been struggling in reading for several years and
conducted several diagnostic assessments and accurately identified the root of the
student’s complex reading needs. She is a problem-solver. Megan’s work with this
student was highly successful. In just 4 weeks, the case student’s reading rate
significantly increased.
Megan exhibited long-term dedication to children’s education no matter
logistical barriers. This is a quality I see in all MSU graduates, but Megan’s ability to
learn very quickly and independently and her technical skills set her apart. Without any
additional feedback from me, Megan matched an evidence-based intervention with
College of
Education her student’s needs, progress monitored and graphed that student’s performance, and
adeptly interpreted the graph for next steps with instruction. This is the key skill that
Department of makes teachers so effective in getting results by individualizing instruction. It’s a skill
Counseling, that usually takes a long time and a lot of professional learning to acquire. I have no
Educational doubt that Megan will be achieving tangible results with her students from the
Psychology, and beginning and will be leading schools to improve outcomes for students in the very
Special Education near future. I recommend Megan without any reservations and am proud that she will
be educating the next generation of students with excellence, and continually striving
Erickson Hall
Michigan State University to improve students’ trajectories. Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can provide
620 Farm Lane Room 447
East Lansing, MI 48824 further evidence of Megan’s potential as an educator.
