Good-for-Nothing

The ‘no-homework’ policy is good-for-nothing. Homework is a scholarly work given to students

outside the customary school hours. It is not restricted to written tasks but it also involves researches or
in any other forms as long as it is assigned to be done after the school day. Although this may have
positive results, the other side is always present— the negative side. Having a good motive is not an
excuse to overlook the bad sides of it. This no-homework policy, or HB no. 3883, was passed by House
Deputy Speaker Evelina Escudero and Quezon City Representative Alfred Vargas in separate bills. This is
with the objective of limiting the load of homework being given on weekends.

This policy was mainly passed for the purpose of mending relationships— family, friends, self,
etc. According to a study from Western Cape Province, South Africa; the national discussions show our
perception towards the idea of homework. It is said that homework is a burden to children and parents.
Moreover, it also affects the family life wherein some cases, impact are blown negatively. But most of
the time and generally, it is positively affiliated with scholastic achievements.

This situation can be considered as a win-win situation as well, whereas students are given
relaxation and a healthy social bonding after a long and tiring week, and the teachers are being spared
from more paperwork allowing them to focus on improving classroom engagements. This supports the
claim that this policy will balance the mental exhaustion and social responsibility of a student.

However, this may produce effects inflicting us eventually. Firstly, this approach can corrode the
quality of education, and in the long run, affecting the willingness of the youth. Secondly, like what the
Teacher’s Dignity Coalition said: “Our teachers are trained educators. We know the value of homework.
It's about discipline, responsibility, and continuity of learning.” We will lose the practical methods in
terms of decision-making and life lessons. Homework does not only attain the understanding and
intellect of a person regarding a specific topic but also for one’s pragmatic thinking. Time Management
is one example. Lastly, it extends students’ learning activities. People have an adaptive characteristic
that gives us different habits. Some are more comfortable learning outside the school premises, while
some are a lot comfortable learning with people not present in school. This permits students to learn
not only inside the school, but also outside the premises.

Again, this ‘no-homework’ policy is good-for-nothing. The Department of Education should

devote more of their time in ameliorating and examining the subsisting laws regarding homework to
assure that they can encounter effective results and discussions. Homework is a crucial part of
education and therefore, must not be banned. There are other ways in stabilizing the social life and
learning status of a student aside from prohibiting homework. Homework is just a lift of the leg on a 100
step stairs in this aggressive and fierce world.
