Every child has rights, no matter who they are or where they live.

Nearly every government in the world has promised to protect,

respect and fulfil these rights, yet they are still violated worldwide.
Save the Children's Child Rights Governance (CRG) programs in the Philippines focus on holding the
government accountable on children's rights standards by monitoring its performance and commitments
under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). While the Filipino government
ratified the UNCRC six months after it came into being, there are still instances where children's rights are
ignored or not taken into account in government procedures and policies.
Ensuring children are heard
Working together with other child-led organisations and civil society, we do policy research and analysis
to ensure child rights are upheld in government policies, procedures and laws - and that children's voices
are heard and taken into consideration. Last year, our involvement in the Bata Muna campaign led to
children becoming more aware of their rights during elections - read more about it here. This year, we're
encouraging children to take an active role through our Children Talk to Children About the UNCRC
project and our aim is to have at least 2,000 children take part in collecting and contributing information
on child rights in the Philippines.

We have also taken a lead role in advocating on key issues such as corporal punishment and violence
against children, early pregnancy, juvenile justice and children's access to basic services.

Child rights in emergencies and disaster preparedness

With natural disasters featuring so prominently in the Philippines, we've developed strategies to involve
children in disaster preparedness and risk reduction. After Typhoon Yolanda struck, it emerged that many
children were confused about the warning signs, what to do and the sheer scale of destruction. Save the
Children believes that children should have access to Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) information,
presented in a child-friendly way, and their opinions, concerns and views should be taken into
consideration in DRR planning and activities.
