ROMAN SCHOOLS
Most Roman children didn’t go to school-they worked on farms with their parents. Boys
from rich families usually went to school but all girls stayed at home with their mothers. The
schools were small, with only one room and one teacher. The teachers were always men,
and their students were boys of 7 to 12 years old, who all studied lessons together. The boys
used to sit on chairs but they didn’t have any desks. The teacher taught reading and writing,
and simple maths. No one had any books or paper then, so boys read on papyrus (like
Egyptian paper). Some boys also learned music. When the boys were 11 to 12, they usually
stopped going to school. Only a few boys went to Roman high school.
