Title : Throwing Rubbish

“Imagine a world filled up with garbage, without a cleanup crew,

rubbish would be piling up high everywhere and diseases would spread
like wildfire to threaten the very existence of mankind”
Good morning to the honorable judges, excellent time keepers, teachers
and members of the floor. Today, the topic of my speech will be about
“Throwing Rubbish”.

Ladies and gentlemen, do you know the impact of not properly

disposing and throwing rubbish? Well, it is making the world a harder
place to live in due to pollution and contamination. Just burning rubbish
in the open causes air pollution. Which then makes the world a hard
place to live in because of the pollutants in the air. For asthmatics, like
my brother, they will find it diificult to breathe due to contamination.
Polluted air causes 5.5 million deaths a year. New research says most of
these deaths occur in the rapidly developing economies of China and
India. The main culprit is the emission of small and sometimes
hazardous particles from factories, vehicles exhausts and from the
burning of coal and wood. Even our teachers are forever informing and
scolding us to throw rubbish into the rubbish bin.
Members of the floor,

Everyday, everytime and everywhere we always produce rubbish. Do

you ever through rubbish into the trash can? If you haven’t done yet, you
are littering. Do you know the impact of littering? Littering causes many
dangers. One danger would be if you burn the rubbish or throw it into
the rivers or sea, it produces bad chemical substances. For example,
Cadmium is an extremely toxic metal commonly found in industrial
work places, can kill kidney cells. Carcinogen is radiation that is an
agent directly involved in causing cancer. This may be due to its ability
to damage the genome or disrupt the cellular metabolic processes.
Another chemical is Sulphur. Sulphur is an element that occurs naturally
in the environment and is the sixteenth most abundant element in the
earth’s crust. It’s an essential component of all living cells. When human
sniff in Sulphur, they will be infected pleurisy disease.

Ladies and gentlemen,

Not only does it gives bad impacts for human health, uncollected
rubbish also gives a bad influence to society. For example, uncollected
rubbish absolutely produces a bad horrible stench that will disrupt
human activities in the surrounding area. It will also cause less aesthetic
for environment and make human’s stress levels increase.

Finally, is the financial effect for citizens, the community and the
country. In the U.S. an estimated $11.5 billion each year is spent on
litter cleanup, according to Keep America Beautiful. In England,
approximately £858 is spent yearly to collected 30+ million tons of litter
(according to Keep Britain Tidy).
In India, A sum of Rs 17, 843 rupee has been allocated for the Swachh
Bharat Mission (Clean India Mission). I can think of a lot better ways to
spend this money. I bet you can too. There is also an indirect cost.
Lower property values; loss of commerce and in vacation spots, tourist
dollars.
Littering is easily solvable. There are lots of problems on the planet,
but this is one we CAN do something about. IF we really want to, we
could elimate litter in a year.
What can we do, you may ask. Well, according to guruhabits.com there
are 8 Littering problem solutions.

No 1. Contact Local Government Authorities

Contacting the local town council takes less time and effort than you
might think. Most city governments have a department that handles
complaints about littering.

Just call the main number, ask for the person or department that handles
these complaints and give them the details. Be sure to get the exact street
names and addresses before you call.

No 2. Contact Elected Representatives

Contacting elected officials for help in solving your littering problem
can result in action being taken in a matter of days, weeks, months, or
years depending on the complexity of the request.

Things like getting stricter penalties, signs, trash cans, and maintenance
require a lot of time before you see any results. Your efforts in initiating
these projects may prove to be very beneficial in solving your problem
permanently.

Next No 3. Is to Contact Property & Business Owners

Sometimes a letter to the property or business owner will solve the
problem. These can be done anonymously as well, but it’s very
important to be polite and respectful if you want to get favorable results
We can also do No 4. Which is to Contact Local Television News
Stations
Some local television news stations promote the fact that they will
investigate and help to solve problems within the community.

No 5. Post Stop Littering Signs

Create a sign in your word processor or other software that challenges
the behavior of those who litter.

Next 6. Organize a Community Cleanup Event

Many communities have annual cleanup days. They usually only last a
few hours, can be a lot of fun, and are very satisfying when you finish.
You might be able to speak with the leader of this event and ask them
for their advice in solving your particular problem.

And also No 7. Give them a Place to Put Their Trash

Even though it’s a poor excuse to litter when a trash can isn’t nearby,
any effort to reduce or eliminate the problem is worth the effort.

If you notice that a particular area near a bus stop, fast-food restaurant,
or convenience store has a lot of trash, ask the authorities to put a trash
can there or put something there yourself that can serve the purpose.

Finally No 8. Become a Trash Terminator

One way to improve or eliminate the problem is to pick up the trash
yourself. Not only will you appreciate the trash free environment, but it
may encourage others to follow your example. In addition, several
articles I found on the Internet state that people are less likely to litter in
clean areas.
Before I end, I would like to share with you some words of wisdom from
the great Micheal Jackson.
(sing)
“Heal the world,
make it a better place,
for you and for me and the entire human race,
there are people dying,
If you care enough for the living,
Make it a better place for you and for me”
Thank you.
