THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Background of the Study

The purpose of this study is to explore and learn how people see online
shopping as a convenient tool for everyday needs the main concept of online
shopping is to allow the customers to shop virtually using the internet and allow
customers to buy items and other personal needs from the

Humanities and Social Sciences

Online shopping is basically a process of selling and buying of goods and

services on world wide web. As Forsytle and shi ( 2003) explains online shopping
has become the fastest growing use of the internet most online consumers

According to Aldrich, (1979) systems connected to modified domestic TV

to a real time transaction processing computer with a simple menu-driven human
computer interface was universally applicable, participative (interactive, many to
many) and communication medium in 1980 Redifon’s Office was establish which
enable consumers customers, agent, distributors, suppliers and service companies
to be connected on line to the corporate system and allow business transactions
to be completed electronically in real time

Christensen (2006) It is believe that satisfied customers will lead to their

loyalty and improve revenues. Customer loyalty is the degree of a customer
staying with services, it eventually will help the firm to increase its customer loyalty.
In other words, high customer satisfaction lead to high customer loyalty while low
customer satisfaction lead to low customer loyalty.

Bitner, (1990) Taylor, (1994) have pointed out that waiting created a
negative impact on customer service satisfaction. Consumers’ time will be wasted
a lot if have to keep waiting for such a long time and definitely will cause the
consumers to have bad impressions to the seller or company. Time and energy
saving are in the same concept

Brown, (1990). Time and effort play an important role because these two
factors might affect consumers’ convenience during shopping. Online shopping

definitely can help consumers to save time and effort in purchasing process by
bringing a lot of convenience. Convenience factor refers that it is easy to browse
or search the information through online is easier than the traditional retail
shopping

Rohm and Swaminathan’s (2004), one possible explanation that online

shopping saves time during the purchasing of goods and it can eliminate the
traveling time required to go to the traditional store. On the other side, some
respondent think that it is also time taken for delivery of goods or services over
online shopping

Theoritical Framework

Utility theory
The theory proposed that consumers make decisions based on the
expected outcomes decisions consumers were viewed as rational actors who
were able to estimate the probabilistic outcomes of uncertain decisions and
select the outcome which maximized their well-being.

Satisficing Theory

Satisficing is a decision-making strategy that aims for a satisfactory or

adequate result rather than the optimal solution instead of putting maximum
exertion towards attaining the ideal outcome

The theory was made to better understand the consumers decision

making in this theory it is stated that customers often select a product which is
good enough rather than perfect and consumers got approximately what was the
intended item purchase

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

LOCAL LITERATURE

According to Manglinong (2015), the conversations on social media about

shopping during the Christmas season shows the growing interests of Filipinos in
online shopping in recent years. The Philippines provided 30 percent of the social
media buzz on online shopping in the Christmas season and special holiday sales
for Black Friday and Single’s day as early as September. The Philippines ranked
second just behind neighbor Indonesia, from which 57 percent of the shopping
buzz came. It was found that the e-commerce websites Qoo10 and Lazada are the
most talked about online shopping hubs in the country. Filipinos could create as
much buzz for online shopping comes to no surprise as it becomes a household
staple.

According to Talud (2014), the attitude and behavior towards online buying
are two main factors that affect e-buying potential. The major reasons for buying
online seem to include convenience, flexibility of opening hours, and saving
money. Subsequently, firms buy online because they can get detailed product

12

Senior High School Department
Humanities and Social Sciences

information, delivery, convenience, product quality, and lower prices. However,

they believed that online buying will save their time, money, and effort, thus,
reducing their purchasing costs. They considered return policy, product
specifications, and security of transactions as important parts of online buying
because these will give them a feeling of security. Yet they have a little concern
with the availability and variety of products for online selling.

According to Macaraeg (2019), almost everything that people need is now

just one click away because of the booming e-commerce ecosystem in the country.
Instead of going to the mall to buy clothes or gadgets, e-commerce has paved its
way for a less tiring shopping experience with the use of a mobile phone and an
internet access. E-commerce has been expanding in the country now that online
marketplace Lazada introduced the concept of “shop entertainment” which gives
people fun and more entertaining experience.

FOREIGN LITERATURE

Park, et. al (2014) stated how third-party assurance seals, a privacy service
provided by vendors to mitigate customers’ fears, has a great impact on online
customer satisfaction and repeat-purchase intention. Seals provide a frame such
that a consumer’s overall satisfaction and repeat-purchase intention would be
higher when vendors provide assurance seals than when they do not.

Prybutok, et. al (2010) stated the explosion of e-commerce activities

required industry and academia to understand the key determinants of consumer’s

13
LYCEUM OF ALABANG
Senior High School Department

online repurchase intention. We developed an integrated model by examining

utilitarian factors (perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness), the hedonic
factor (perceived enjoyment), and social/psychological factors (confirmation,
satisfaction and trust) directly or indirectly influenced consumers continuance
intention in the context of online shopping.

Kumar (2015) stated that online shopping play a great importance in the
business industry. Online shopping has opened its opportunity and advantage to
the firms. Solitude and safety risk emerges regularly as a reason for being cautious
about internet shopping. Shopping convenience, information seeking, social
contact, and diversity affects the consumer attitude towards online shopping. The
impossibility of product testing, problems with complaints, product return and
missus of personal data are the main doubts regarding online shopping.

SYNTHESIS OF LITERATURE

Online shopping is a one great opportunity to start up a business or to buy

what people desires. It was all stated in both literatures that online shopping
introduced the concept of “shop entertainment” wherein just one click you can have
the product that you desire through buying online. Online shopping is now
convenient for the people especially to shoppers because it’s just an easy access
and can pay the product through its “cash on delivery” method. Although it was
also stated on the literatures that they may be circumstances such as product
testing, product’s complainants and returning of products, online shoppers risk
their fortune in order to buy product that they desire in the most convenient and
cheap price.

LOCAL STUDIES

According to Maala, et. Al (2018), the customers of Lazada are most

exposed to the online website while they are least exposed to television
advertisements. The television advertisements of Lazada can only be seen
occasionally. Some of them are not even aware that it has television
advertisement. Majority of the results of the perception of consumers towards its
communication tools are positive. Most of the respondents agreed towards the
communication tools’ attractiveness comprehensibility, acceptability, call to action,
and credibility. The consumers consider doing the browsing and/or the purchase
because they believe that it is credible.

According to Research and Tech Lab (2018), Filipino consumers still

prefer shopping in brick and mortar stores over online platforms, favoring the
physical appeal of products despite the convenience of online purchases. Filipino
shoppers also prefer inspecting the product themselves before making a purchase,
while others factored in the cost of shipping and the length of delivery time. The
majority of shoppers who used both online and traditional platforms are aged 18
to 31 years. While preferring to see the products for themselves, shoppers were
found to be searching for products online before buying them in physical stores.

According to Mahinay, et.al (2016), the consumer perception and purchase

behavior among must students were generally high. It is then established that there

16
LYCEUM OF ALABANG
Senior High School Department
Humanities and Social Sciences

was a high significant relationship between the consumer perceptions and

purchase behavior on online shopping among the students who engage in online
shopping. Substantially, the increase of consumer perceptions on online shopping
can lead to an increase of purchase behavior. To sustain their high perception on
online shopping, it is recommended that the web developers will incorporate
features on their websites regarding convenience, security, benefits, and leisure.

FOREIGN STUDIES

Choudhury (2014) stated that online shopping has become a new trend of
shopping nowadays and is quickly becoming an important part of lifestyle. Due to
widespread internet access by people and e-commerce usage by traders, online
shopping has seen a massive growth in recent years. Young people have been
the majority shoppers online and thus this study finds out the attitude of youth
towards online shopping.

Trevinal & Strenger (2012) stated that shoppers who already have
experiences in online shopping are more familiar with e-commerce and should
have more confidence in buying online. The youngest shoppers or called as “the
digital natives” who are used to the internet environment. Their online shopping
experience must be different: they might be more curious, fond of new brands with
an appetite for novelty. Thus, co-creation experiences may be shared by

17
LYCEUM OF ALABANG
Senior High School Department

consumers with their social network (family, friends, and members of the
community: all types of companions).

Chen (2012) stated that consumer’s intention of reusing online websites for
shopping is a major consequence for an electronic commerce company’s
profitability. Therefore, understanding the factors that influence online customers’
repurchase intentions is of great importance to the EC companies. Online
consumer repurchase intention is determined by satisfaction, perceived
usefulness, perceived ease of use, and internet shopping self-efficacy. Satisfaction
is influenced by perceived usefulness, perceive ease of use, confirmation, and
positive internet shopping experience.

18

Humanities and Social Sciences

SYNTHESIS OF STUDIES

Both studies showed how online shopping meets its satisfactions on

consumers. It was both stated that shoppers tend to buy products through online
rather than physical buying because it is easier, and more convenient. In foreign
study, it was stated that most of the online shoppers are teenagers that’s why they
are branded as the “digital natives”. Those people who used to buy products
through online shopping are more confident in buying products online even if
there’s no physical inspection of the desired product. Although there are some
people who still choose to get outside their houses and go to markets to buy
products, online shopping gives a great advantage to people who choose to stay
at home and just wait for the delivery of their products to come.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research Design

The method of research that the researchers used was the descriptive
survey research design gathers quantifiable information that can be used for
statistical analysis on the target respondents through data analysis. this type of
research takes the form of closed-ended questions it reveals and measure the
strength of a target group’s opinion, attitude, or behaviour with regards to a given
subject. According to Aggarwal (2008) descriptive research is devoted to the
gathering of information about prevailing conditions or situations for the purpose
of description and interpretation. gathering and arranging facts that’s includes
proper analysis, interpretation, comparisons, identification of trends and
relationships.

Respondents of the Study

The Respondents of the study are in total of 400 consumers who use online
shopping platform with different employment status and is a resident of Muntinlupa
city along with selected Barangay Alabang, Bayanan, Putatan, Poblacion and
Tunasan

Sampling Technique

The researchers used purposive sampling as defined by Ritchie (2003)

strategy where members of a sample are chosen with a purpose to represent a
location or type in relation to the criterion in summary the researchers choose
specific people with specific criteria and specific interest within a sample population
the sampling is done by selecting people who use online shopping platforms in
different areas of Muntinlupa City.

Research Instrument

The researcher created survey questionnaires that consist of 3 different parts

The First part has the demographic profile of the respondents that includes the
(Name) (Age) (Gender) and (Employee status) second part is the evaluation of
different kinds of variables that surrounds the aspect of consumers satisfaction last
part is the last part is the conclusion of the study

Date Gathering

The researchers handout questionnaires to selected respondents 400

hundred respondents were chosen through purposive sampling which were
carefully handpick by the researchers the respondents consists of residents of
different barangay’s in Muntinlupa city.

Statistical treatment of Data

The data to be gathered by the researchers will be categorized according

to the problems formulated in the research design. For the purpose of presenting,
summarizing and analyzing clear and precise data, the following statistical
treatments are to be used.

1. Percentage. The percentage is used to interpret the data gathered from the
responses of the respondents on the questionnaire according to its profile
variables and also the perspectives of the respondent to the topic.

2. Weighted Mean. This is treated statistically using the weighted mean formula.
This statistical technique was used to determine and measure the average
responses of the different options provided in the various parts of the questionnaire
used. This formula is:

𝑥 = 𝛴𝑓𝑥 ÷ 𝑛

Where:

X = weighted mean
𝛴𝑓𝑥 = the sum of the products of f and n (f being the frequency of each
weight and x as the weight of each operation)
