Desks are organized in a circle. Teacher turns on computer to be ready to show a video slide show and
lesson activity in moodle website of teacher.

Description of the lesson

In the introduction to the lesson, the class discusses questions about the topic of the lesson (Does the
moon always look the same?). This question is on page 5 of textbook that Ss used in last class. This
can establish rapport and friendly atmosphere of learning. Thinking about topic activates students of
schema (use another term other than „schema‟ such as „past experiences‟). Picture on the book are
helpful for visual and young learners.

Pre-teaching vocabularies introduce key adjectives using pictures. Before introducing words about
phases of moon, teacher introduce relevant adjective (i.e. crescent of crescent moon) first for helping
understanding words. Using lesson activity including pictures could give fun and is good for visual and
kinesthetic learner. Learning key vocabularies before reading helps Ss can be active in the reading
process.

The first reading activity is a jigsaw activity. It is a cooperative technique; one segment of a learning
task is assigned to each group member who then works to become an “expert” in that area (Aaronson,
1978). It could give opportunities for English learners to interact with their English-speaking peers,
receptive and productive language learning opportunities.

In the second reading activity, students can go over reading text again by different way with images
and listening text. Pictures with text about phases of moon on the video slide show can help their
understanding of text and learning key vocabularies..

Students can apply their knowledge into real life in the third reading activity. They apply what they
learn about phases of moon to make a book – The phase of moon. Integrating art makes contents in
science more relevant to the learner. During this step, students can demonstrate both their craft and
understanding of the lesson as they develop their speaking and presentation skills. In the closure of
the lesson, teacher praise participation of students and also introduce the homework assignment.

In most steps, students work collaboratively by group and pair. It provides a safe environment to share
their ideas and checks their answers. Science concepts and contents are connected not learned in
isolation, skill development is increased, and understanding of all content is deepened. In this lesson,
students are able to understand deeply the different kinds of moon phases and why the moon has
different phases through various reading activities.

Description of materials

Earth Watch Book is main text book of this class. We use this book just for activating prior knowledge
and schema in the introduction stage. Reading text is from enchantedlearning.com website. It is
appropriate of this lesson.
Reading Text

Moonrise from Earth:


The moon rises and sets every day, appearing on the horizon just like the sun. The
time depends on the phase of the moon. It rises about 30 to 70 minutes later each
day than the previous day, so the moon is out during daytimes as often it is out at
night. At the time of the new moon, the moon rises about the same time as the sun
rises, and it sets at about the same time as the sun will set.

As the days go by and the moon circles the Earth, the shape of the moon appears to
change. The shape of the moon seems to change as different amounts of the moon‟s
surface are being illuminated by the sun. The shape varies from a full moon (when
the Earth is between the sun and the moon) to a new moon (when the moon is
between the sun and the Earth).

Phases of the Moon:


 Crescent Moon: A crescent moon is part way between a half moon and a
new moon, or between a new moon and a half moon.

 Full Moon: A full moon appears as an entire circle in the sky.

 Gibbous Moon: A gibbous moon is between a full moon and a half moon.

 Half Moon: A half moon looks like half a circle. It is sometimes called a
quarter moon (this Moon has completed one quarter of an orbit around the
Earth from either the full or new position and one quarter of the moon‟s
surface is visible from Earth).

 New Moon: The new moon is the phase of the moon when the moon is not
visible from Earth. The side of the moon that is facing us is not being lit by the
Sun.
