The document summarizes the key organs and functions of the human digestive system. It begins with the mouth, where food is broken down by chewing and mixed with saliva. Next is the stomach, which secretes acid to kill bacteria and further break down food. The partially digested material then moves to the small intestine, where nutrients are absorbed with help from the pancreas and liver. The large intestine then absorbs water and forms waste to be excreted from the body. The overall purpose is to break food down into smaller molecules that can be absorbed and used for energy, growth, and cell repair.

learner will be able to- 1) Define Digestive System.
2) Identify its different organs.
3) State the functions of each organ.
WHAT IS IT ?
Digestive System breaks down food into simpler
substances for absorption into the blood stream. MOUTH
Digestion begins at the mouth, where food is
taken in and broken down into smaller particles by chewing. Saliva in the mouth moistens the food. STOMACH
Stomach secretes gastric juice which kills micro-
organisms that may have been ingested with food. The food then passes into the small intestine. OESOPHAGUS
Muscles in the throat make it possible to
swallow food, which then descends through a muscular tube, called oesophagus, to enter the stomach. SMALL INTESTINE
Food is further digested in the small intestine
with the help of enzymes from the pancreas and bile from the liver. LIVER
All blood leaving the small intestine travels
to the liver. The liver removes absorbed nutrients from the blood and either stores them or converts them into products needed by the body. LARGE INTESTINE
The walls of the large intestine absorb water
from the undigested food, leaving semi-solid waste matter called faeces. These waste products are excreted from the body through the rectum and anus. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
