Educational Computing
Tutor
Lesson Plan Title – Arithmetic Operation using Binary, Octal and Hexadecimal
Target Population –
Grade Level: 12 – First semester of undergraduate
Population Characteristics: This lesson plan introduces first and second session about
arithmetic operation using numbering system to 15-20 high schools or first semester of
undergraduate students. Students in this group are expected made arithmetic operation in
different numbering system and made conversion.
Lesson Groupings: Individual and groups activities using worksheets.
Curriculum Links – As particular part of Computer Mathematic subject, these two days
lesson plan will give exercises about arithmetic operation using computer’s numbering
system, which students have explained at previous class meeting. The next class will talk
about Set Numbering.
Objectives –
Students will be able to….
• Learn about arithmetic process in binary, octal and hexadecimal numbering system
using tutor software
• Make their own definition about how Addition, Subtraction and Multiplication in
binary system
• Make conversion from binary to other numbering system.

B. Day Two
1. At glance brief about previous class.
2. Teacher will give some questions for each group but in different topic from
what they selected before. For example, group A choose Addition in binary,
then they will get question about Subtraction or Multiplication. This step will
evaluate how much students understand other topic than theirs own.
3. Using same group from previous class, students get Worksheet_2 and access
Internet at same address from before (http://www.animath.net/index1.html)
to solve questions about Addition and Subtraction in binary but they have to
convert its results in octal and hexadecimal.
4. They also have to find out Addition process in octal and hexadecimal.
5. Each group should post their work on subject blog, which created by teacher
at the beginning class.
Supplemental Materials –
Worksheet 1: Addition, Subtraction, and Multiplication in Binary
Worksheet 2: Addition and Subtraction in Binary and convert to Octal and Hexadecimal.

Evaluation of Students –
Students will score with point 10-100 depend on their activities. Students will be evaluating
base on individual and group activities.
80-100 Points = Excellent; 50-70 = Good; 0-50 = Marks as possibility to get tutor
Objectives 0 point 10 points 20 points
Group activities • Didn’t participate • Give some • Active in give
actively in group contribution but opinion to group
task. mostly passively work
• Didn’t post • Post Worksheet_2 • Post Worksheet_2
Worksheet_2 to but wrong answer with right answer

Individual activity • Didn’t participate • Participate but • Active in class
in discussion class give out of topic discussion with
answer serious answer
• Didn’t • Work on the • Work on the

Worksheet_1 with some error right answer
Internet activities • Didn’t know how • Spend more time • Capable to find
to explore the to find right right program on
provided link program on the the link
link
• Cannot use • Need much help • Can find out how
application to to use application to use program
solve problem
At the next class, students will face harder problems then teacher can use Worksheet_2 as
one of indicator students’ success. Other indicators are students’ activities in group and
posting their answer on blog. Students will enhance their knowledge to solve variety
problem among numbering system.
