HRMA 1301 SPRING 2020

EXCEL ASSIGNMENT

This assignment tests your proficiency in using Excel, as discussed during the first part of the semester.
The Excel assignment is worth a total of 120 points.
INSTRUCTIONS
Open the file “Excel_data_Spring_2020”.
Take a few minutes to become familiar with the structure of the data in the file.
1. Change the name of the main sheet to “Master_sheet_1” and color its tab background in red
(University of Houston red color). Also, format the header row (row 1) with red background and
light gray or white text. Change the font to Arial, size 11. (5 points)
2. Replace all numeric values in the quantitative variables (columns B through G) as follows:
o “1” becomes “strongly disagree”
o “2” becomes “disagree”
o “3” becomes “neutral”
o “4” becomes “agree”
o “5” becomes “strongly agree” (5 points)
Leave the missing values as blanks.
3. Replace all numeric values in the “Loyalty status” variable so that:
o “1” becomes “Member status”
o “2” becomes “Silver status”
o “3” becomes “Gold status”
o “4” becomes “Platinum status”
o “5” becomes “Elite status” (5 points)
Leave the missing values as blanks.
4. Create a new sheet and name it “Cases”. Create a new variable called “Customer ID 1” in the
Cases sheet by copying only the values (but not the formulas) of the original “Customer ID”
variable. Using the RIGHT and CONCATENATE functions demonstrated in class, create a new
variable called “Customer ID 2” in the Cases sheet so that each ID number value from the
“Customer ID 1” variable fulfills the following conditions:
o The first 4 digits of the ID number are represented by four asterisks (****)
o The last 4 digits of the Customer ID number remain the same. (15 points)
 For example, if the ID number was 12345678, the new ID number will be
****5678.
5. Using the command Conditional Formatting, format only the values greater than $160 from the
“Rate paid” variable. For the conditionally formatted cells, use a yellow fill and a red font color.
(10 points)
6. Insert a filter on the header row of the Master_sheet_1. Filter the data in the “Party size” variable
so that it shows only the “couple” travelers. Then filter the data in the “Loyalty status” variable to
show only the values of “Platinum status”. Count how many rows of data are still displayed
(excluding the header row) and write this number in the area marked in green background in the
main sheet. Then remove all filters so that the full data set is displayed again. (15 points)
7. Insert a pivot table in a new sheet. Rename this new sheet as “Pivot”. In the pivot table, represent
the “Stay duration” as rows, with data represented as both numbers (counts) and percentages of
total. Represent the percentages without the decimals. Copy the table and paste (values only) in
the “Cases” sheet. Format the table using your favorite table display template. (15 points)
8. In the pivot table, represent the “Stay duration” (as rows) against “Education” (as columns).
Remove the blank values and filter out (do not display) the “7 or more nights” category from the
“Stay duration” field. Represent the data as percentages of each row, rounding off to two
decimals. Copy the table and paste (values only) in the “Cases” sheet. Format the table using your
favorite table display template. (10 points)
9. For each case, calculate the “TOTAL revenues” by multiplying the “Rate paid” with the
“Revenues retained”, then subtracting “Other commissions”. Round off to two decimals (10
points)
10. The value in cell S3 represents the Tax Rate (highlighted in yellow). Calculate the “TOTAL
TAX” (Column P) for each row in the worksheet by multiplying the “TOTAL revenues” by the
Tax Rate value from cell S3. Show the values as U.S. Dollars. (Hint: you can transform the cell
S3 from a relative to an absolute reference) (10 points).
11. Using the AVERAGEIF function demonstrated in class, calculate the averages “Rate paid” for
ALL of the “Loyalty status” variable categories (for example, for “Member status”, “Silver
status”, etc.). Present your results in a table in the area marked in blue background in the main
sheet. (10 points)
