Unit of Competency:
Plan and prepare for troubleshooting and repair
Module Title:
Planning and preparing for troubleshooting and repair
You may already have some of the knowledge and skills covered in this
module because you have:
been working for some time
already have completed training in this area.
If you can demonstrate to your teacher that you are competent in a
particular skill or skills, talk to him/her about having them formally recognized so
you don’t have to do the same training again. If you have a qualification or
Certificate of Competency from previous trainings show it to your teacher. If the
skills you acquired are still current and relevant to this module, they may become
part of the evidence you can present for RPL. If you are not sure about the
currency of your skills, discuss it with your teacher.
After completing this module ask your teacher to assess your competency.
Result of your assessment will be recorded in your competency profile. All the
learning activities are designed for you to complete at your own pace.
Inside this module you will find the activities for you to complete followed by
relevant information sheets for each learning outcome. Each learning outcome
may have more than one learning activity.

Learning Objectives:
After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to execute correctly
the procedure Plan and prepare for troubleshooting and repair.
After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to learn the
the applicable Code of Practice for Refrigeration and Air Conditioning.
This Code of Practice is to control the management, operation, compliance and use
of the data and service of Retailers Against Crime CIC (RAC
The RAC and MAC sector plays a vital role in the implementation of the
Montreal Protocol to phase out the ozone depleting substances and to improve the
service level in the refrigeration trade. Refrigeration and air-conditioning systems
are large users of electrical energy and represent huge capital investments. To
maintain these systems according to this Code of Practice (CoP) should ensure low
leaks of refrigerants and lowest possible energy consumption resulting to lowest
possible impact of the environment from Ozone Depleting Substances and on
Global Warming from direct emissions of refrigerants as well as from indirect
effects from Carbon Dioxide (CO2) emissions caused by energy consumption. This
CoP will also act as reference document for the training of service technicians, to
set minimum standards for good practices in servicing refrigeration and air
conditioning systems and initiate communication between relevant stakeholders
and other concerned trades. As a result, upon implementation of this code, it is
expected that CFC consumption will be reduced in a cost effective manner,
without requiring major capital investment.
Drop-in Refrigerant – substance that is claimed to be direct replacement for ODS
refrigerant, without changing existing mineral oil in the system.
hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) - a chemical compound containing only
hydrogen, chlorine, fluorine and carbon, known to be less damaging to the ozone
layer and are considered interim replacement for CFCs.
Hydrocarbon - a chemical compound containing only hydrogen and carbon. These
are not damaging to the ozone layer and have a minimal global-warming potential
but are flammable and appropriate measures to avoid the flammability hazard
should be taken.
Instruction: Identify what is being ask in the statement. Encircle your answer.

Given the necessary tool, materials, and equipment you need to
open and serve white wine. You must able to execute the
troubleshooting and repair domestic refrigeraton and air-conditioning
base on the proper standard procedure.
