WORKSHOP 2
The engine stand shown in the Figure is designed as a truss structure. Model the
structure using the SPAR elements in the ANSYS library. Apply the loads shown in the
Figure. Apply the proper boundary conditions to the wheel connection points. Eliminate
all rigid body motion without causing unrealistic restrictions on the structural
deformation. The materials of structure is S235 steel and the cross-sectional area of all
members can be taken as 1000 mm2 as an initial value. The factor of safety is can be
taken as 2.
(a) Analyze the structure and obtain the deformation and stress distribution. Is the
structure safe or not?
(b) Redetermine the cross-sectional area of truss members to reduce the structural
weight. Compare the structures (previous and present designs) in regard to
structural weight, deformation and stress results.
