WORKSHOP 4

A load carrying frame is subjected to distributed load shown in Figure 1. The members of
frame are made S235 steel. The longitudinal beams at the upper side of frame have a
wide flange section (I Profile). The dimensions of cross-sections are given in Figure 2.
Cross beams have a tubular cross section. The other members are the rectangular box
beams. The factor of safety can be taken to be 2 according to ultimate stress.
(a) Calculate the stresses and deformations due to the applied loads
(b) Apply an eigenvalue buckling analysis to verify the structural stability. Take a FS
of 1.5 for the structural stability.
(c) Modify the dimensions of cross-sections according to the analysis results.
(d) Perform a free vibration (modal) analysis to obtain the natural frequencies and
mode shapes.
