2. Which room does your family spend most of the time in?
My family spend most of their time in the living room. We like to sit around on
a set of comfortable sofas there and chat with each other or watch TV. But
when I am free, I prefer to read alone in my room.
I live with my mum and dad and my brother. Our apartment is pretty big so
there is enough space for everyone. We bought the apartment four years ago.
And my brother is in the school near my home, so we won't intend to move in
the future.
I live with my parents in our private house. Although during the time I studied
abroad I already experienced living in a flat, but it ended up not so good so
home sweet home, I think I’m okay with my house.
7. Do you plan to live there for a long time? (If you answer you haven’t
lived there long)
The answer would be yes for my parents, since moving in and out is too time-
consuming. Cleaning and arranging everything all over again would be like
torture to them. Instead, as I’m thinking of moving out, hopefully soon I’ll be
able to afford living in a flat or an apartment.
8. What’s the difference between where you are living now and where
you have lived in the past?
9. Can you describe the place where you live?/ Please describe the room
you live in/ What parts of your home do you like the most?
Briefly, my humble 4-floor house locates in a small and quite street, so coming
home to me is like all the craziness happened outside is left behind. Just
besides my house stands a big old tree. I have my own room with walls
painted violet, which was exactly my favorite color. The air outside is fresh. I
usually open the window to let the wind and sunshine in, which will help
cooling down my room without air conditioner. Since I spend most of my time
staying at home, my room means the whole world for me .It’s like a friend who
is always there to share ups and downs with me day and night. So yeah, I
would always miss my house, my room whenever I’m away.
10. Which room does your family spend most of the time in?
It’s the dining room where we spend most time together. We are a traditional
family that while having dinner we watch the news and talk about our days.
Endless stories have been told so we can help each other through hard times.
Also we try to keep the family dinner as something we cannot go a day
without, since for us it’s the family bonding that lies behind.
Well definitely I’ll spend some me-time there. I study, I chill with my hobbies
such as reading, drawing and dancing all by myself. Sometimes I also invite
one or two friends to spend time with. We’ll watch some movies together and
tell each other endless stories.
• Yes, I’m really into going to these places. I think it’s easy to understand
why most people gravitate to places near water. The main reason is that
I can find the water very soothing and calming. Whenever I’m under
stress, I just go straight to the lake nearby so that I can feel relieved.
Moreover, I am a big swimmer and love being in the water. That was the
first sport I mastered as a child and I felt lucky to know how to swim that
soon because there is always a feeling of weightlessness and freedom
when I’m near open water.
• 2. What do you like to do there?
• Obviously I’d first take some picture. The ocean looks stunning at any
time to me. Then I’ll go swimming. There’s no such thing more relaxing
than surfing and chasing big waves. Then probably I’ll build some
sandcastle or just lie down and enjoy the fresh ambience.
• 3. What activities would you do if you were spending some leisure
time at a beach or near the ocean?
• Obviously I’d first take some picture. The oceans looks stunning at any
time to me. Then I’ll go swimming. There’s no such thing more relaxing
than deepening myself under the water. Then probably I’ll build some
sandcastle or just lie down and enjoy the fresh air.
• 4. Why do some people like water sports?
• The first reason I could think of is because of the water. It’s fresh, it’s
cool and it’s calming. Water is even believed to have the capability of
easing our mind, which might explain why people love swimming.
Besides, when it comes to diving, surfing or canoeing, the story is totally
different. Extreme sports under the water bring about unforgettable
experiences with the nature.
• 5. Do you think the government should invest money in developing
facilities for water sports?
• Since I’m not a fan of water sports, what I know about the current
problem of facilities is actually limited. But personally, I think it depends
on whether that type of water sports worths investing in. If it serves for
practice for national or international competitions, definitely upgrading
should be allowed.
• 6. Do you think that human activity is posing a threat to the oceans
of the world? What do you think are the advantages and
disadvantages of travelling on the ocean?
• There are indeed a large number of human activities that have serious
impacts on the oceans, namely fishing, shipping, oil spillage and
tourism. Some of the consequences remain unsolved for many years.
Combining with other activities taking place on land, human nowadays
are continuously destroying the nature. There is such a wonderful world
under the sea that almost every human desires to discover. Travelling is
a good mean to kick-start. However, a number of accidents have taken
place. Therefore, travellers’ safety is one of the top concerns.
• 7. Do you think it’s important for children to learn how to swim?
• Of course the child should be taught by his parents. Unless they also
don’t know how to swim that they should need a guide for help.
However, they should also be there with their son to encourage him or
protect him.

Vocabulary and Useful Expression:
Ambience (noun): air, the atmosphere of a place
Sure, why not, if it is something that they find useful in their lives and
something that they enjoy. Learning is lifelong and I don’t know if it has to stop
in old age. Now I know that a lot of times these adults are looked upon as
teachers, but if they feel so inclined why not attend a class to further their
education. If they are not able to keep up with the young students then this
would be a detriment, but if there are no disruptions why not?
There are wonderful exercise classes that are available for adults in China. I
don’t know if you have seen large groups of older women out on the streets
performing with various percussion instruments, but these are classes that
help them to work together and perform for audiences. There arc dancing
classes available. There are even English classes available for senior citizens
in China. There are Tai Chi classes also available to seniors here. As time
goes on and the country develops there will be more classes that will be
available for seniors.
Well I guess one of the main ones is that they arc working and they need to
keep up with the latest technology that will help them to stay abreast of the
latest in their fields. Sometimes they might even be thinking of switching
careers so they take classes to get the training to do so. Other times they
might just want to learn some things in their spare time that will enhance their
life on a recreational level. Other times their bosses might want them to learn
some special skill for the good of the company.
Again it depends on the course and why they are taking it. If it is for personal
gain or gratification then of course students should be responsible to pay for it.
If the government is offering a course and adults are interested in it then it is
already paid for. If it is going to move the company ahead and bring financial
results then of course the company should pay for it. Now if the company can’t
pay for it and it interests the individual then it is up to him to get the money
together to attend the class.

Definitely, there are. They appear all over the place from the streets to social
media with a high density. For example, there is a multitude of colorful flyers
sticked on the street walls in Sydney.
Advertising is here, there, and every where. It gets to people through different
types of communication such as flyers and banners on the streets or printed
ones on newspaper, magazines or electronic ones on social media. It could
be written, verbal or a short movie.
Sometimes, I find it a little bit annoyed and disappointing because the quality
products are usually overrated. However, there are other beneficial
advertisements in supermarkets which has informative contents for customers
such as on which days there will be promotions or which new products will be
launched.
Launch (v): to introduce (a new product or publication) to the public for the
first time.
I’ve found that it really varies what kind of advice parents give. Many of my
friends’ parents are really overbearing. They try to force themselves into every
decision their kids make, be it important (like moving) or unimportant (like
buying a hike). Other parents are really hands-off. They let their kids make all
their own decisions. This way kids can learn from their own mistakes. I think
each way has its advantages and disadvantages.
Friends seem lo give each other advice about things that they have
experienced before on their own. For instance, I’ve lived in China, so I can
help my friends decide whether it’d be a smart move for them. These
situations are useful, because friends are often of the same age, so they can
offer a viewpoint from someone who is going through the same kinds of
situations. Most of the time, though, friends’ advice tends to be about small
things, like what clothes to wear or what stuff to buy. These situations aren’t
really advice, but more suggestions or what they dunk.
No, I don’t think young people should follow’ all of their parents’ advice. 1 think
they should listen to what their parents have to say. and use that information
to come up with their own decisions. Parents are there to help kids out when
they need it, but not to instruct their kids how to live their lives. If you rely on
your parents too much, you might eventually end up in a situation where they
arc not around to help you, and you have to make a decision about something
you’ve never thought about on your own before.
I’m not too sure. But in my limited experience, it seems that Chinese people
really rely on their parents. Therefore, I think that it’s rare to sec a Chinese
person flat out denying what their parents suggest they do. It seems that they
are far more likely to take what their parents say into consideration than to not
listen to it.
I think, yeah, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with giving advice. You can
make your opinions known, then whoever you are talking to can choose
whether or not to listen to it. Giving advice does nothing more than try to give
the person who is making a decision a little bit more information than they had
before. This is especially so in case of parents and children, because so many
of parents’ decisions affect kids’ lives, so the kids should have a say in the
decision-making process.
7. Which has more influence on young people, advice from their parents
or their friends?
This is a tough but good question. 1 think that when kids are really young, like
under twelve, they rely on their parents more than their friends. When they
become teenagers, though. I think they listen to a much larger percentage of
their friends’ advice. Kids at this age arc really concerned with being cool and
being accepted, and their parents aren’t that big of a help to them. Their
friends know what is cool and what’s not. As they get older, though, I think
that people rely on their friends and family pretty equally. By this time, I think
most people realize the value in everyone’s opinions, so they consider what
everybody says.
Yeah, there arc places to go for advice. One I absolutely know of is the
Internet. Any time 1 have to make a decision, I look online for different
websites that have reviews or suggestions about different things. The Internet
is a hugely valuable resource for things like this. Other than that, though, I
cant really think of anywhere people can go for advice.
Yes, it should. I think art is a very important subject, because it not only
encourages self- expression, but also is a creative art and helps to develop
artistic creativity’ in many areas of life, not just art. Also, children who feel they
are accomplished and are able to do something more than study do better in
other classes and subjects, because they have a higher self-esteem. Children
who don’t know how to do anything other than their basic subjects will feel
inferior to their peers, and will not perform as well in class as they could.
They help to develop a child’s creativity and curiosity. They help a child to
express himself through the things he draws, notice the things around him and
learn from them. Art also encourages an admiration for nature and living
tilings, so children who have been taught to appreciate art are less likely to do
things that are harmful to the environment, to others, or to themselves.
Hmmm, that’s a little hard to answer. I think that Chinese paintings arc very
popular in China. Most people here in China like paintings in the Chinese style
or paintings of familiar scenes here. There are also quite a few abstract and
realistic paintings and styles that are popular with certain groups of people.
5. Some paintings are very expensive, but people still want to buy them.
Why do you think they do so?
I think that most of the time they want to have a very expensive painting so
that they can show it off to their friends. Or maybe they feel it makes them
look more in style or more fashionable to have expensive paintings by famous
people. Some people collect paintings or works of art, so they will get anything
they think will look nice with their collections.
I think there are many benefits. For one, it can he very relaxing to paint,
especially if you are outside in nature. Also it can help to take your mind off of
any problem or stress that you might have from your work. It will also improve
your creativity and help you to think better.
self-esteem (n): belief and confidence in your own ability and value
1. Do you like art?
I have a lifelong passion for art since I was a child. Beside official art class in
school, I also joined a drawing class in The Children’ House and my teachers
were very pleased with my drawings. I also participated in some drawing
competitions back then. Until now I still draw in my free time, although not as
often as I used to do.
2. Do you think art classes are necessary? (Why?)/3. How do you think
art classes affect children’s development?
Yes, definitely. Learning arts, especially at a young age, can help stimulate
children’s cognitive development and encourage them to think outside the
box. Because they’re still little, their ideas are very fresh and lovely, which is
worth appreciating.
I think the mediation efficiency worths mentioning first. Colors in some ways
reflect our thoughts and emotions very well and somehow stimulate our body
to defense against our negativity inside. For me, in particular, I think what’s so
interesting about painting is that you have no idea how harmonized colors can
become until you actually try.
To tell you the truth, I have never visited art galleries before. Unless I have a
guide to acknowledge me, art galleries would be quite boring for me.
I think I must say it’s even challenging for a lot of people. I absolutely failed
when it comes to drawing still life paintings like fruit and flowers. I think for
those who succeed in drawing or arts in general, they first must have God-
gifted talent, then comes to the long-term commitment to arts that requires
extreme practice and high patience.

Bag is not really must-have item to me. I just use a backpack due to its
convenience. Probably I’ll spend some time getting to know more about bags
later on.
I’m not a big fan of this item so the only bag I use from time to time is the
backpack. I love backpack because I tend to put a lot of heavy stuff inside
such as my laptop, my water bottles, etc. whenever I get outdoors. It’s the
long-term convenience that makes high-quality backpacks worth my money.
I think every women regardless of age, occupation, tastes, needs, etc has at
least one backpack with them. As I’ve already explained about its
convenience, backpack is ideal for everyday life. However, the top favorite
bag would be the well-designed handbag.
Spine (n): a series of vertebrae extending from the skull to the small of the
back, enclosing the spinal cord and providing support for the thorax and
abdomen, the backbone
I really enjoy being alone during the mornings at the weekend. I can read
some books and play computer games. During that time, I can do something I
am interested in, and don't have to worry about anything.
3. Do you like to spend time with your friends or just stay at home on
your own?
The last time I was in a hurry was the time I rushed to school one morning for
a final exam, because I had woken up so late
2. Do you like to finish things quickly?
No, I don't like to do things quickly because I will not concentrate or I might
make mistakes.
I guess when people are working, for example if a doctor is doing an operation
a slight mistake could be vital to the patient. Also if a person is taking a test
they should concentrate or they might make mistakes
• Well, “The alarm didn’t go on and the bus was late or I was caught in
traffic.” Those arc just a few of the most-heard excuses. “My mom is
sick, and I have to take care of her.” is another. “I have to take my
brother to school ” will work sometimes. “I got caught in the rain.” helps
in the spring time.
• 2. Are people in China usually punctual when they have to be
somewhere at a certain time?
• Well, I wouldn’t say that they are there on time every time, but they are
getting there, they are starting to have the same attitude with people in
the West that “time is money ”. It really is a bit of a hard habit to break,
as the style of life and the culture have not been that of arriving right on
the dot. Of course if people really want to be punctual, and it is really
important to them, then they will do everything they can to get there on
time.
• 3. What do people in China think of people who are late?
• Actually Chinese people arc pretty generous overall with people who arc
late. They arc understanding and don’t make a big deal out of it. On the
other hand, if they arc really bothered by people being late, you wouldn’t
know about it anyway, as most Chinese people don’t reveal their
feelings very easily. Overall they are pretty easygoing on people who
are late.
• 4. Do you think it’s important to be on time? (Is punctuality
important?)
• Yes, I think it is very important to be on time. If you are not on time, then
you are basically robbing the time of others. It really shows a lack of
respect for others and that you don’t think their time is important.
• 5. For what situations is being on time important?
• Immediately the first thing that comes to my mind is your own wedding.
If any event is important I would say that is, getting to your wedding.
There is a funny saying in the West. It goes something like this, “He
would be late to his own funeral!” I suppose that is a little extreme but
funny, though no one has ever been late for that. A job interview would
be an important time not to be late. If you want to make a good
impression, and they say “first impressions arc the greatest ones,’’ then
you should try to be there early.
• 6. For what situations is being on time not very important?
• If you were going to go and meet your friends for a game of basketball,
and you knew they were going to be there for the afternoon, then you
would not have to get there on the dot but would have a little leeway on
arriving. If you were supposed to be home for dinner, but you came in a
little late, that would be understandable. If you were going to your
parents for the day, and you came a little late, they would understand.
Most situations in which being late isn’t too important would involve
friends and family.

Vocabulary and Useful Expression:
easygoing (adj): able to stay calm about things that anger or worry
most people
Well since I was in the middle of my final exam week, I had no time to think
about my birthday. I celebrated it once the exam was over. My friends cooked
dinner for me and bought me some cakes. And friends from my hometown
also sent me lots of wishes. I think that humble party was fairly enough for me.
I think I’m fine with any kind of casual birthday presents like stuffed animals,
flowers, accessories and cosmetics. It’s much appreciated as long as they can
remember my birthday and give me wishes.
There lies a big difference. When I was a child, I celebrated every year by a
big party with my family and lots of friends. As I grow up, I tend to separate
the celebration with my family from that with my friends.
7. How is it celebrated?
People always have their own ways to celebrate and enjoy life and their
birthday parties are no exceptions. We often come across Sweet 18 or
Coming of Age ceremony, which are relatively the same as any birthday party
except with bigger scale and higher bills.
cosmetics (plural noun): substances put on the face or body that are
intended to improve its appearance or quality
spoil – spoilt – spoilt (v): pamper, give someone anything he/ she
wants
throw a party : organize a party
turning point (n): the time when an important change takes place,
usually with the result that a situation improves
If you mean reading something meaningful and realistic, I must say it’s not
enough. The young generation are too into technology that I don’t think they
have time for reading. Plus, publishing nowadays is not as strictly selective as
it used to be, thus the young mostly read a number of books which indeed
have no value at all, compared to Les Miserable, Gone with the wind, Jane
Eyre, etc.
4. What kind of people like reading and what kind of people don’t like
reading very much?
From my point of view, I think book-nerds are those who prefer putting
themselves into the character’s shoe, you know, they wanna interact with the
story, the characters on their own way. Some of them love to imagine how the
story is supposed to continue while some keep wondering what they would do
if the drama suddenly happened in their real life. Those who do not like to
read are either too busy with their life that they even can’t remember the
characters’ names, or they prefer listening, I mean, they have someone read
the story and tell them the ending only.
I mostly like older styles, such as those during the 50s. I also like newer style
like some kinds of punk clothes. I like skirts and dresses best. Loose types of
clothing are most comfortable. I like to have nice, neat, stylish clothing, too.
Many people buy clothing because it is a new style or it’s a colour that they
like. Often people will buy something because it looks like what a favorite
movie star or singer wears. Other people buy clothes that suit them, or that
they will wear most often. Other people just buy clothes because they are
functional.
Personally I don’t really care about the brand of clothing as long as what I buy
is good quality. Famous brands are usually too expensive for me so I will
rarely buy them. Often I can find inexpensive brands that are just as good a
quality and very nice. Of course here in China you can get brand name
clothes at a very cheap price.
Many people buy brand name clothing because they like the style. However,
some people simply want their clothes to last a long time, so they buy a
certain brand of clothing that is known for its good quality. Other people buy
brand name clothing because they feel it make them look more stylish and
hip. Some people just like to have that name on their clothing. I think it might
make them feel important.
5. Compare the materials and lash ions of today’s clothing with those of
the past
In my opinion, older fashions changed more slowly and gradually from one to
another. The faded into each other. Fashions of today change drastically in a
very short period of time. Often certain clothes will only be in style for one year
or so before another, very different style is in. Of course there are more
choices to choose now.
6. Do men and women have the same shopping habits when they buy
clothes?
No, they have very different shopping habits. Often men will shop less and
only because they need new clothes. They often do not buy much, and they
will spend less money on what they buy. Actually I think that they dread
shopping and probably would rather go to the dentist. Women buy clothes
more often and they usually pay more for their clothing. Often they will buy
new clothes because they want to be in style. I think women also don’t mind
spending money as long as it’s their boyfriend’s or husband’s.
I think it helps reduce competition in the work or school area. When the
workers or students don’t feel that they have to keep up with someone else’s
clothes or style, they are able to concentrate on work or study. The bad side
to it is that if the uniform is uncomfortable or docs not look very smart or
stylish, it makes work or school unpleasant for some people. Also it can make
people feel that they have no individuality and are just like everyone else.
I guess not only me, a number of young people have been highly impressed
by her for the past months- Deshauna Barber. She is our 2016 Miss USA and
the representative of USA in Miss Universe taking place in Las Vegas in the
same year. After the beauty contests, she became well-known for her
outstanding beauty, her amazing characteristics and also her professionalism.
Absolutely. The person I’m gonna talk about is my bias ever since I was a
teenage girl-Miley Cyrus. I guess most people at the same age as me grew up
with Disney Channel and among its successful series, Hannah Montanah
starring Miley Cyrus would always be on top of my list. Although now she’s
grown up, I’m still a big fan of her amazing voice and highly inspiring songs.
Well though I’ve never thought about it, I’m pretty sure that rising to stardom
would never be one of my life goals. I appreciate all the efforts that the
celebrities, no matter which field they’re working on, are making every single
day. However, I find myself not belong to that world, I mean, you never know
what’s going on when the curtains close, right? So yeah, I don’t think I want to
become a public figure, to be honest.
Indeed. As you probably can tell, these days fans, anti-fans and even non-
fans are so curious about what their bias are doing. Some are aggressive that
they mentally attack their bias by leaving bad comments online. Some even
approach them in person on the street, especially the so-called paparazzi.
Thus I strongly agree that there should be some regulations to protect the
celebrities’ privacy.

1. Do you think it‘s a good idea to teach children to read before they
start school?
Yes, I think it’s important to try to teach children how to read at as early an
age as possible. The earlier they know how to read, the sooner they can start
learning other things. Also, if you teach them early, it may instill a desire in
them to keep learning throughout their lives, which would be extremely
valuable. I know my parents started me reading very young, and today I think I
am better off because of it.
I think kids all over the world like to read books that are either based in the
same world they are in (school) or in a world that isn’t like this one at all
(fantasy/Harry Potter). Everything else, I think, fails to hold their attention.
Unless it has a good, entertaining story, kids will not be interested, and I think
these kinds of books kids can either identify with or can get.
3. Do you think the Internet will influence the way people read in the
future? (How?)
Yes, I think the Internet will have an impact, though I’m not sure what that will
be. I imagine that sometime, someone will invent something that is the size of
a book, so people can download books onto it, and it will be easier to read
than a computer screen. Then, from there, through the Internet, it will be
extremely easy for people to read any book they could possibly imagine. Also,
I think the Internet will give people the ability to read stuff that they are
interested in. There is so much content that people will be able to find
anything, so people’s tastes will get highly specific.
Well, chocolate is my all-time favorite. After working my butt off all day long, I
usually decompress with a chocolate bar.
Well, although it’s quite pricey, I usually buy myself a box of hand-made dark
Belgian chocolates when I receive my wages.
4. When was the first time you ate chocolate?
To the best of my recollection, it was 20 years ago when I ate chocolate for
the first time. The 7-year-old me was over the moon/on cloud nine/deliriously
happy when eating something that moreish. Now that my taste changed
though, still I enjoy having some dark chocolate after working hard all day
long.
There are a variety of chocolate brands with different price range and quality
available in the market nowadays. Thanks to the health benefits that it offers
for human, consuming chocolate at a suitable level is encouraged. The
sweetness of chocolate also makes it a common present that men choose to
give their beloved women in special days, especially Valentine’s Day or
International Women’s Day.
7. Do you think people use chocolate differently now than in the past?
Well, I have never ever thought about it. However, I suppose that people living
in this modern life prefer eating chocolate than their ancestors. In my country,
the number of chocolate consumption is on the rise, especially in young
consumers.
Cardiovascular system (n): The system that circulates blood and lymph
through the body, consisting of the heart, blood vessels, blood, lymph, and the
lymphatic vessels and glands
Oh, definitely not. I always wore school uniform which was a blue jacket with a
white shirt. They were very simple and boring. So when I reached home, I
tended to put on my favourite outfits.
Oh, yes. Formal clothes really make me nervous so when I go home, I take
them off and change into my sweatshirts.
4. Did you have any special clothes to wear when you where a child?
radiation (n): powerful and very dangerous rays that are sent out from
radioactive substances
Well, actually I don't have any instinct for fashion and my look says I'm a laid-
back kind of guy. So I usually wear casual clothes. I'm most comfortable
wearing jeans, a T-shirt and my flip-flops.
I personally don’t enjoy participating in local events, but for some reason
many people actually do. I’d much rather watch the event from a distance.
Maybe this is just because I’m lazy, but I just don’t really feel the need to go
out there and be another nameless person in a crowd that won t miss me at
all.
Well, one of the advantages is that your community will look out for you. If
you’re in trouble you’ll get support from your neighbors, and they’ll be more
likely to accept whatever you decide to do. Also, if you are in a close-knit
community, more people will be your friend and invite you and your family
over to their house for dinner. Like the saying goes, a man is only as rich as
how many friends he has. A man is only as rich as how many friends he has.
This is a tough question, because I personally don’t think that they do. Most of
my neighbors are just nosey old busybodies who are always trying to find out
some new piece of gossip. All the rest are out working all day and when they
come home they just want to watch TV or sleep.
Before the community was very strong in China. You always did things with
your neighbors and helped them in whatever way that you could. Also,
whenever anyone did something that wasn’t quite right, everyone knew about
it, and the person was very embarrassed. But now everyone is out working,
and aside from a few old busybodies. no one has time to help or get involved
with the affairs of their neighbors.
Both. One can be competent but if they cannot cooperate with others, they will
meet with failure in their life. No matter where you go, what position you hold
in a company, you will have to work with others, communicate and cooperate
with them. If all you are capable of is competition, how can anyone else
benefit you? Whatever those children choose to do, they will desperately need
both skills.
2. Do you think that too much competition could damage the spirit of
cooperation in society?
Of course. By that I mean that competition can eventually lead to war, as has
happened on a number of occasions in Central America. If you promote
competition so much in comparison to fair play and good sportsmanship then
the wrong values are being espoused. Cooperation is based on working
together to help the whole. When you foster this spirit then you are
contributing to society. 11.Some people say that success means being
number one and that being number two is valueless. What do you think? This
is really an immature way to look at life. I really believe that you just have to
get up and keep trying no matter who is in first or even second place. Just
finishing the race has its rewards. Forget about what others are doing and just
get on with life, this is my philosophy, which I try to live by.
immature (adj): not behaving in a way that is as calm and wise as people
expect from someone of your age
Absolutely! I'm a huge fan of going out to the countryside. The environment
there is just superb. Every now and them I visit the countryside just because
there isn't that much pollution there so I can breath the fresh air.
2. What do people living in the countryside like to do?
People living in the countryside can enjoy various activities that those who
cities cannot such as going out at night without fear of street criminals and
doing exercise in the early morning to enjoy the fresh air
4. What are the differences between living in the city and the
countryside?
However, many people have been attracted to live and work in big cities
because of better employment opportunities and higher living standards.
I think that businesses should support local events. It not only helps to create
a good image tor the business, but shows customers that the business is
interested in their welfare. It can also provide good advertising opportunities
for the business. Everyone likes to do business with a community-minded
business.
Many Chinese like to eat their vegetables cooked. They enjoy eating food that
is fried, steamed, and sometimes boiled, but rarely eat baked food. The only
time they will eat bake food is when they have cakes from the store. Most
Chinese food is cut in bite-sized pieces before being cooked and served.
I think eating healthy is a very important part of life. If you don’t give your body
what it needs then it won’t be able to function well. This is why what you eat is
so important to how well you are able to do things. Eating well even improves
study.
I believe there are a fair amount of vegetarians. Most Chinese already eat
very little meat, so without even trying they are almost vegetarians. However, I
think if they had the chance, many Chinese would eat more meat than they do
now. Though as health awareness increases I believe there will be a rise in
the number of vegetarians in China.
4. Is the food that people eat today in China different to the food that
people used to eat in the past?
I think that in many ways it is quite the same. I do know that in recent years
there has been a rise in the number of fast-food restaurant. Many people
especially of the younger generation, enjoy going to these restaurants. The
actual Chinese food, though, has not seen much change over the years.
5. How do you think the way we cut will change in the future?
Our eating habits will of course affect the way we will live in the future
because of the effect it has on our health. If we eat well then we will have
better health as we get older. I believe, though, that as time goes by fast food
will become more popular. We will be entering a time in history where going
fast will mean the difference between success and failure, so the food industry
will change to accommodate the population’s demand.
Yes, fast food is very popular here in China. I believe the main reason the
taste is very different from that of Chinese food. This appeals to the youth of
China. Also the advertisements of most fast food restaurants portray their food
as cool or western food.
2. Do you think it’s important for people to eat with their family?
I think that when you eat with your family it strengthens the family bonds. It
helps you get to know each other better and learn more about what each are
doing in their lives. It’s very sad when families don’t see each other often.
Often in China mealtimes are the only time a family spends together.
I think most family rarely eat out. Usually either the mother or the grandmother
of the family will cook and prepare the food It is more common for young
singles and professionals to eat out, either alone or with classmates or
colleagues. Other married or dating couples will spend a dinner together for
special occasions or to get know each other more.
5. How do you think restaurants have changed, over the past few years?
Before, The restaurants did not cater for foreigners at all. The menus were all
in Chinese and had no pictures. Now more restaurants, especially in areas
with many foreigners, will have menus in English and pictures for those who
are not familiar with Chinese dishes
1. Have computers (the items you chose to talk about) changed much
over the years?
Yes. computers have changed so much since they first came out. The first
computer took up a whole, huge room. Today, computers are so small you
can put them easily into a shoulder bag. Some are even small enough to fit
into your pocket.
I use computers every day and they arc used in almost every area of my life. I
also use printers often to print out the information that I have put together on
my computer and give it to someone else. In my kitchen there are also some
electrical appliances that I use every day like toasters, microwaves, and
refrigerators. A coffee maker is an appliance not used much here in China, but
probably is used more in the U.S. and Europe.
I think that it is very possible, but I don’t think that this is good. Right now it’s
very hard to keep up with technology so what would it be like if it was all
replaced? It is almost hard to fathom. Well you know if we ever run out of oil it
seems to me that a lot of the technology would change.
I think we will have electrical appliances that will do many of the jobs and
duties that require less thinking. Jobs like cooking, cleaning, and repairing
may soon be taken over by machines and very intelligent appliances. We may
soon have appliances that can have dinner on the table by the time a mother
and father have come home from work and the child has come home from
school. We may have appliances that will clean the house and make the beds,
fix the sink and paint the walls.
The most common form of communication in the office is email. Even between
people next to or near each other it is becoming more common to just type out
an email or memo. Another very common form of communication is the
phone. No matter where someone is they will almost always have an office
phone or a cell phone.

I'm really into watching films because some films are very entertaining and
provoking. I sometimes go to cinema with my friends and family to enjoy our
leisure time in the weekends.
White roses are truly my favorite flower. They are traditionally associated with
marriages and new beginnings. However, their beauty has also made them a
gesture of remembrance. Therefore, a bouquet of white rose is a perfect way
to say “I’m thinking of you”.
For an introvert like me, enjoying the harmonization of various types of flowers
with different gorgeous colors in the garden or in florist shops could brighten
up my days and lift my spirits.
Flowers are widely used in many occasions and festivals in our country to
represent for a blessing, happiness and good luck. Most families have at least
one kind of plants or flowers at home.
Yes, they do. As mention above, flowers play an essential role in different
occasions as a special gift for people to show love to one another. People,
especially girls, are happy and pleased when they receive their favorite
flowers from beloved ones on their birthday.
I hang out with my friends from time to time. Normally if we have lots of time
on the weekends, we will go to the cinema to watch movies to have a good
time. We might also have dinner together in a restaurant if we have the time.
3. Where do you like to go when you hang out with your friends?
extrovert (n): an energetic happy person who enjoys being with other people
hang out (phrasal verb): o spend a lot of time in a place or with someone
Most people buy furniture at a few main points in their lives. Naturally when
people arc getting married is one of those times. Another time is when they
buy a new flat.
2. How do people decide what furniture to buy for the home or office?
What factors do they consider?
Well, they will consider what kind of furniture is needed. They w ill also look at
which room it will go in and how much space they have. The women
especially will think about color and style and what design looks best to them.
I’d say price is probably the deciding point. They might like something very
much, but if it’s too expensive they won’t be able to buy it.
3. In Chinese families, who usually decides what furniture to buy for the
home?
I think it varies from family to family Nowadays, couples are making more
decisions together. In my family, my parents even ask me what I think or like.
In the past, often the men made decisions that concerned money, but some of
those things are changing now.
That also depends on the people and the families. I don’t think there is any set
preference. From my experience though, I would say many younger couples
prefer modem furniture. I think it goes along with other trends in our country.
What I mean is that modern or foreign fashions are often more popular and
interesting, especially for young people. Maybe I’m different in this way though
because I think many pieces of traditional furniture in our country arc very
beautiful. They are also often made better than the modern things.
5. Have there been any recent changes in the kinds of furniture that
people (in China) use?
Well, as I said a lot of foreign influence has come into China and this is
affecting what people buy, including furniture. A very popular furniture store
right now in China is IKEA, this is a store from Sweden and its style of
furniture is a big change from the recent and distant past. I think that if people
have the money they may return to the quality furniture from years gone by.
Over all, though, the predominant style of furniture that people in China use is
modern.
6. What factors should a furniture designer consider when designing a
piece of furniture?
The use of the particular piece would lie the first consideration. A designer
would also have to think of the market he is targeting. This would usually
indicate the cost of the finished product. This in turn will influence what
materials he can use within that price range, in turn price range.
I’d say he needs to he artistic and imaginative. At the same time a designer
also has to have quite a bit of practical sense. It’s generally no use to design
something that is beautiful bill impossible to construct. Or maybe the designer
can figure out how to build it. but il ends up so expensive that no one can
afford it. In any design field, there are people who design something more for
art’s sake: they don’t really expect anyone to buy it or they hope to find a
collector to buy it as a piece of art more than as something useful.
Since I’m one of those idealists when it comes to buying presents, not often
do I buy others gifts, but it doesn’t have to be a special occasion that I send
them presents. Especially to my friends, just a small gift like a handmade
bracelet or a simple drawing could make their day.
I think gifts are becoming more diverse these days. Stuffed animals,
accessories, jewelries and flowers are too traditional for the young. Probably
handmade stuff is currently on top of the list because of their spiritual value.
And sometimes it doesn’t have to be a physical gift. Probably a delicious
homemade meal is enough to make their day.
3. Are expensive gifts always better than cheap gifts?
No, definitely not. A gift doesn’t have to be expensive in order to show care for
the person receiving it. Often a very expensive gift can show that they were
just buying something but not really thinking about what would mean the most
to the receiver. This isn’t always the case, but 1 think that a cheap gilt can
mean just as much or even more than an expensive gilt can.
No, it’s not necessary. It’s nice when friends give each other gifts, but there
are other things you can do to show your friend your care. If someone is your
friend, you shouldn’t expect that they will always get you gifts. True friendship
is caring about the other, not looking for how much he can give you.
Stuffed animals (expression): a toy animal made from cloth and filled
with a soft material so that it is pleasant to hold
I think the most popular gift is the Chinese ‘hong bao‘ or ‘red envelope’.
Money is put in these red envelopes and given at birthdays, weddings, and
Chinese New Year. People will sometimes buy other gifts for these occasions.
If it is for a child, they might give a toy or stuffed animal. Sometimes food is
given as a gift, either having been cooked by the giver, or store-bought.
People send gilts mostly on birthdays or Chinese New Year. These are the
traditional times for gift-giving, but as many Western holidays and traditions
arc slowly becoming more popular in China, it is quite acceptable to give your
friends a gift at Christmas, or your sweetheart a gift on Valentine’s Day. Even
though some people may not know why different festivals are celebrated, they
still enjoy the chance to show the people they care about how they feel.
4. If you were going to give a present to a child, what would you give
them?
Well, if it were a boy, I would get him a Lego set. The reason why I would
choose a Lego set is that it is very fun and at the same time, it encourages
creativity. If it were a girl, I would give her a glass doll. I would give this to her
because most little girls like dolls, and if it were glass she would take better
care of it and treasure it more because it could break easily.
5. Do people give the same kinds of gifts to both boys and girls?
I think some people give both boys and girls the same kinds of gifts because
they don’t know what to give, so they just get them the same thing. Other
people may do this if two children are friends or siblings and the person
doesn’t want them to fight over different toys, and if they have the same thing,
they will be happy. Or people may not know that girls and boys like different
things, so they don’t think about whether the gift they arc getting is suitable for
that child.
Yes, globalization has its problems, but for the most part, it is good for most
people involved. Some people have different opinions because they are really
concerned with the loss of culture, but for me, the benefits outweigh the
drawbacks. People have access to more information, so diseases can be
better treated, food can be made more efficiently, and goods that make
people’s lives easier are now available.
3. Do you think it’s easier to learn about other cultures today than it was
before?
Yes, of course it is. All you have to do is to look at art from long ago about
foreign cultures and you can see the lack of knowledge people had. Today,
with the Internet and the number of books available, it is almost impossible to
be ignorant. It is so easy to learn about anything you want.
Yes, I do. Some things should not be advertised, such as cigarettes, which arc
harmful to people’s health. Most people arc aware of their existence, so they
don’t need to be promoted more. Children especially should not be shown
advertisements that make harmful things look cool or interesting.
Advertisements that have age-inappropriate content should also be banned.
3. Do you think that advertisements for products that harm the health,
such as cigarettes, should be allowed?
Now you arc getting into freedom of choice and whether it would be better to
just prohibit something from being advertised to get people to stop using the
product, but unfortunately this just doesn’t work, as prohibition in the States
found out. The best thing would be for the products just to not be
manufactured, but this doesn’t work either because then they would be
produced illegally, becoming more dangerous.
Well, most products are really promoted by false advertising. I hate to sound
so cynical but I have a friend in the advertising business, and a lot of so-called
experts advertising their product know absolutely nothing about it. In the Held
of beauty care products, this happens a lot. The poor women sitting at home
with nothing to do except watch TV me so susceptible In this kind of
advertising.

I love writing I must say. Writing helps me stay focus and organize things way
more effectively. In class I always have my pen and notebook ready to take
some notes and when going out I type my notes on the phone.
Yes, I'm really into communicating with my clients by email. I send emails to
them on a daily basis from my office, discussing business, guiding them how
to use the system and solving their problems. I like sending emails because I
can trace the communication in email software. It is much more useful than
the telephone.
Well, there are so many people in my country, it's really hard to say, probably
most people write something on computers, for example, people like to write
blogs to share their feelings with friends on the internet, but personally
speaking, I don't think that writing without pens can be called writing.
In China, children usually learn to write in elementary school. They firstly learn
the basic elements of the Chinese characters, then the simple characters, and
finally the complicated ones. They will have to do a lot of writing practice to
remember them. The more they practice, the better they write.
Yes, I feel that handwriting allows people to have more opportunity because if
you have decent handwriting, people will admire you and you are considered
to be both well educated and literate.
Usually I like to hang out with one of my close friends. Actually we live in the
same community so we can meet frequently. Also both of our kids are in the
same class in kindergarten, so we like to take them to the park or playground
together.
3. Where do you like to go when you hang out with your friends?
Well, if I had to choose between the two, I would go with hanging out with a
big group people because I feel that I am an extrovert. I like to meet different
people and get to know about them and their different kinds of life. I like to be
sociable whereas, you know, with few people around, it would be hard to find
something interesting to do, such as travelling, hiking, etc.

1. Do you like (to learn about) history?
Yes, I am a big fan of reading historical stories. When I was a little boy, I
always took the historical books from my father's bookshelf and read about
historical events. I feel that history not only helps me learn, but also gives me
a better understanding of human society.
Personally I am fond of the Battle of Red Cliffs which happened during the
early period of the Three Kingdoms. This was a decisive battle at the end of
the Han Dynasty. It was also a typical battle in Chinese history renowned for a
smaller and weaker army defeating a larger and stronger foe.
Yes, the main factor is that like our native language and our history forms our
cultural identity and provides a unique record of our country. We can learn
from the experiences of history to correct our current actions.
4. Do you like to watch programmes on TV about history?
5. Do you think you can really learn history from films and TV
programmes?
I don't feel that watching current TV series can make you more aware of the
history. TV programmes are more engaging than books, however, true
historical events in most of the TV series have been distorted by the
producers to cater for the audience. It's really a shame, as young people will
misunderstand history as presented by these companies.
Yes. History is full of debates but you can understand both sides of the story
by going online which will help you to become aware of the true facts and be
able to think critically about these things. I’m always Googling for interesting
historical materials about the Song Dynasty. I want to know the truth of the
matter.
7. Can you name a person from history who you would like to learn more
about?
The person I'd like to learn about is Wu Chengen, the author of A Journey to
the West. He combined folk tales and his own imagination to write this great
fairy story in the 16th century. I want to know about his personality and find
out as much as possible about him. I believe that his imagination is what is
lacking in many writers nowadays.
It depends on what kind of holiday it is. If it’s Christmas vacation, I prefer hang
out with my friends here and there and have a chit-chat. If it’s New Year
holiday, I just want to celebrate the holiday with my family and relatives in a
cozy ambiance.
I would say that I’m kind of an introvert so I would rather travel alone to some
tranquil and peaceful beauty spots than travel with a group of people during
the holiday.
5. If you could take a holiday anywhere in the world, where would you
go? Why?
Actually, it is a small province with slightly more than 1 million people. It has
breathtaking view of picturesque landscapes with mountains and lakes.
However, due to the increasing economy, a number of business, especially in
sugarcane, are invested in my hometown that turns it into a promising area.
I had lived there around 15 years before my family left for Santa City. It’s more
than ten years since the day I left my hometown, but it is indeed a good
memory of my childhood.
I like the hospitality and the love of people there which I hardly find them in my
current place. Everyone is living close together and willing to give others a
hand when they need help.
7. Do you think you will continue living there for a long time?
To be honest, I hope I could come back there one day to visit my relatives and
friends, but to settle down my life there is not my plan. I am getting familiar
with city life and there are more job opportunities for my future career.
Actually yes. It has changed enormously. 20 years ago I could barely find tall
building around my area, but now I can easily catch sight of skyscrapers and
tower blocks there.
9. Are there any changes you would like to make in your hometown?
I would like to ameliorate the infrastructure conditions there so that I can avoid
being stuck in the traffic jam during the rush hours.
Actually, it is a small province with slightly more than 1 billion people. It has
beautiful landscapes with mountains and lakes. However, due to the
increasing economy, a number of business, especially in sugarcane, are
invested in my hometown that turns it into a promising area.
For the past 21 years I have lived in a house with my family. And I think if I
can move out and start making a living on my own, I would try my best to have
an independent place where I can plan and design a house layout to suit
myself since sharing a room or a flat with strangers sounds so troublesome to
me.
Briefly, my humble house locates in a small and quite street, so coming home
to me is like all the craziness happened outside is left behind. Just beside my
house stands a big old tree. I have my own room with walls painted violet,
which is kinda a peaceful color. Since I spend most of my time staying at
home, my room means the whole world to me. It’s like a friend who is always
there to share ups and downs with me. So yeah, I would always miss my
house, my room whenever I’m away.
From my room, every time I open the window, I can catch sight of the beautiful
old banyan tree casting a long shadow on the ground where children in my
town spend their spare time playing badminton with each other. I usually open
the window to see them and enjoy the wind and sunshine.
To be honest, it’s hard to tell, as it totally depends on their taste. But I guess
it’s black because it is simple, yet classy. You know, most of them usually
dress themselves up in black in both informal or formal events.
Dress up (phrase): to put on clothes that are more formal than the
clothes you usually wear
To mix and match (v): select and combine different but complementary
items, such as clothing or pieces of equipment, to form a coordinated
set
To share ups and downs (v): together being through good and bad
times

can move out and start making a living on my own, I would try my best to have
an independent placewhere I can plan and design a house layout to suit
myself since sharing a room or a flat with strangers sounds so troublesome to
me.
Well definitely I’ll spend some me-time there. I study, I chill out by reading,
drawing and dancing all by myself. Sometimes I also invite one or two friends
to spend time with. We’ll watch some movies together and tell each other
endless stories.
I live with my family. There are 5 of us and we all have our own room, which is
way more comfortable as the older we grow, the more privacy we need for
ourselves. I think our house is big enough for us yet still a warm and cozy
place that I call home.
Although during my childhood my family had to move a lot, I’ve lived in the
most recent house for almost ten years. Comparing to the old houses, I think
this house has been the best so far.
6. What’s the difference between where you are living now and where
you have lived in the past?
7. Can you describe the place where you live?/ Please describe the room
you live in
Briefly, my humble house locates in a small and quite street, so coming home
to me is like all the craziness happened outside is left behind. Just beside my
house stands a big old tree. I have my own room with walls painted violet,
which is kinda a peaceful color. The air outside is fresh. I usually open the
window to enjoy the wind and sunshine, which will help cool down my room
without an air conditioner. Since I spend most of my time staying at home, my
room means the whole world to me. It’s like a friend who is always there to
share ups and downs with me. So yeah, I would always miss my house, my
room whenever I’m away.
It’s the dining room where my family spends our time together. Not only lunch
or dinner but all our family reunions take place in the dining room where we
can enjoy a harmonious atmosphere. We always try to keep the family dinner
as something we cannot go a day without, since for us it’s the family bonding
that lies behind.
To share ups and downs (v): together being through good and bad
times
There arc many kinds of housing just as in other countries. There arc Hats
and houses and also villas, but of course most people can’t afford anything
other than flats. That is at least the case in the cities. In the rural areas, there
are many people who live in houses, but these are usually very simple houses
and these people are usually farmers.
2. How do people decide on the kind of housing they choose to live in?
In reality I don’t think most people have a lot of choices. Unless they are very
rich, and these people are few in number compared to the general population.
Most decide on flats because that is all they can afford. Usually people will try
to choose something as close to their workplace as possible. Unfortunately
even in that there is not much choice and many people still have to spend a
lot of time traveling to and from work.
I think if most Chinese people could choose any house they wanted, they
would choose a private individual house rather than a flat. They’d also want
something with a garden where they could have flowers and trees and even
grow some vegetables. They would also want something big enough that they
could have members of their family live with them or at least a place they
could stay if they came for a visit.
Nowadays people live in Hals and often these are in tall buildings if in big
cities. In the past most lived in houses even if they were small. Some cities
had courtyard houses where many family members lived together, and there
was a garden in the middle where they could enjoy the outdoors together.
You’ve probably heard of these. They are interesting to foreigners.
5. How will housing change in the future?
I can imagine there will be more flats in the big cities that will he in taller
buildings and with more modem facilities and equipment built into them. I
hope though that some designers will do something to see that there are more
park areas in between the buildings. I think city planners are making a big
mistake by cramming in so much concrete. More green areas would be an
important change to make in the future.
I think that many people rely loo greatly on machines. They seem to forget
that there are people around them. It is easy to become completely absorbed
in computers or phones or PDAs or MP3 players. People will more often turn
to their machines for entertainment rather than spending time with others or
getting exercise.
2. What arc the advantages that we get from using modern home and
office equipment?
There are some advantages to using modern home and office equipment.
One of the main ones is that more things get done and often we can complete
projects and assignments very quickly. We are also able to do things that we
wouldn’t have been able to do before, like working at home. Also, because we
are able to finish tilings quickly we have more time for other activities that we
wish to do.
3. What do you think is the most useful thing that man has ever
discovered?
I think that the most important discovery was electricity. Without electricity we
would not have any of the modern equipment that we have today. We would
be unable to have phones, computers, lights, TVs. refrigerators, or music
players. Electricity runs almost everything in our houses and work areas
today.
• Simon was so absorbed in his book that he didn't even notice me come
in.
For the past few months I’ve been working for The Guardian as a news editor.
In fact this is my first job ever, I’m working really hard to contribute to the
success of this prestigious newspaper.
3. Why did you choose to do that type of work (or, that job)?
I guess it’s mainly because of the job flexibility & my passion for journalism.
To be more specific, this job offers me alternatives to the typical nine-to-five
work schedule, enabling me to find a better balance between work and life.
Besides, this job gives me opportunities to pursue my dream to become a
journalist down the road.
The Guardian is a National British daily newspaper which offers free access
both to current news and an archive of three million stories. In April 2011,
MediaWeek reported that The Guardian was the fifth most popular newspaper
site in the world. I personally believe that the guardian is the inspirational
workplace for all people who dream of becoming a journalist.
Well the perk of being a news editor is that you’ll surround yourself with
inspiring news on a daily basis. What I don’t like about this job is that I have to
do a thousand edits to get the final one to meet the requirement of my boss.
Sometimes I feel a bit overloaded with tons of tasks.
I surely will miss my student life once I get involve in the workplace. For me I
think when I’m a student, at least I have someone guide me, whereas at work
mostly you must guide yourself. The academic environment appears to be a
comfort zone for me, while I’m sure I’ll struggle with fitting in the working
environment.
Nine-to-five work (phrase): the normal work schedule for most jobs
Overloaded (adj): to give excessive work, responsibility, or information
to
Perk (n): an advantage or something extra that you are given because
of your job
In China, learning English reigns supreme. I imagine that it is by far the most
popular language to learn in the country. No other language comes close, 1
think. If J had to choose some other languages for people to learn, 1 would
guess that Japanese and Spanish would be the next two. Japanese is
important because of the size of the Japanese economy. Spanish, because it
is so similar to English, is fairly easy to learn, and because many people
worldwide speak it.
Yes, I do believe that if countries can speak to each other easily, tensions are
much easier to get rid of. Just as important, however, is studying the culture of
other countries. Understanding that other countries might act differently or
take offense at different actions is a great way to create a more easygoing
atmosphere. But yes, language is definitely the first step towards creating a
more peaceful environment.
I do think it’s extremely important to learn about other cultures. Not only can
you find out interesting things, but it makes it easier to interact with those
people if you ever come in contact with them. Also, it makes it a lot easier to
do business with those cultures. It’s important to be educated about the world
and not just shut yourself into your own country.
Several ways that people can benefit from other cultures arc in business,
personal relationships, and just in self-improvement. In business, it is
necessary to know a little bit about whatever culture you plan to work with. For
instance, I think in Muslim cultures, shaking hands with your left hand is
considered extremely rude. If you didn’t know that, it could hurt your chances
of doing business. Also, it’s important just to improve yourself by learning as
much as you can, and culture is a good subject.
3. What do you think is the best way to learn about another culture?
Obviously, the best way to learn about a culture is to go there and experience
it. If you can get a feel for the culture firsthand, it will be a lot easier to pick
things up, But I also believe that you can learn a ton about other cultures just
by reading books about them. Reading about people’s experiences in foreign
lands is the next best thing to being there.
4. Do you think that learning foreign languages can help us understand
foreign cultures?
I’m not sure that just learning the language is a good way to learn about a
culture, but most places where you would learn a language would help you
learn about the culture, so indirectly, yes. The language alone isn’t great for
understanding culture. For instance, German is a really harsh language, but
Germans aren’t harsh people. You really need to study more than the
language if you want to get to know a culture.
I think it is better to study a language in its native country. When you do that,
you are engulfed in the language and forced to encounter it outside of the
classroom. Otherwise, your only exposure to the language is when you’re
studying or in the classroom. 1 know firsthand that when learning a foreign
language in your home country, it is easy to lose what you have learned.
I believe people learn English in order to adapt to the shrinking of the world. In
this day and age, contact and business from country to country is
EXTREMELY easy, and as a result, language has become a barrier that you
must overcome if you want to participate. Therefore, learning English for most
people is a great way to be able to do business or make friends with
foreigners. I think it’s really positive.
2. Some people say that if you are going to work in a Chinese company
in China, then learning English is a waste of time. Do you agree?
I do not agree at all with this statement for several reasons. First, how do you
know you are always going to lie working for a Chinese company? If you can
speak English well, you might be able to get a better job in an international
company. Secondly, why does language-learning only have to be about
business? If you can speak English, you have expanded the number of friends
you can possibly make. I have made friends with Chinese people only
because they spoke English. I think the above statement is just an excuse
given by people who don’t want to try to learn new things.
3. What do you think is the best age for children to begin learning
English?
4. Would you say it’s better to study English overseas than in China?
I believe that for most people, this is not possible. Either it’s too expensive or
they can’t find the time or a way to live in a foreign country, so it’s out of the
question. However, if they can arrange it, it is definitely easier to learn a
foreign language in that country. Being surrounded by people speaking the
language you are trying to leant is extremely helpful. The best way to do it, I
think, is to take classes of a language to build a base, then go. That way,
when you get to the country, you aren’t totally overwhelmed.
• The minister has pledged his wholehearted support for the plans.
Starting to go to work means that I have a craving for my free time. Whenever
I have a day off, I always enjoy those moments by staying at home and
sleeping. The reason for this choice is because I have to work outside all day,
so my house is a perfect place for me to let my hair down.
To me, free time is such a precious gift from the busy pace of life. Hence, I
always do my favorite things in my free time. Since I am still a postgraduate, I
often enhance my English by watching films. Then I sometimes bake some
cakes for my snacks for the following week.
Well, there’s no denying that families are the best thing that people have.
Therefore, I prefer spending my free time with my beloved family to with my
friends. I love doing that because that’s only the time I can sit with my parents
and seek for advice about my daily problems.
Normally, I'll hang out with my friends because I want to relax, but after being
a father, I spend more time at home with my kid, telling stories to him or
playing games with him.
If I had to choose between the two, I'll probably spend more time at home with
my kid, telling stories to him or playing games with him, whereas, hanging out
with friends will reduce my quality family time with my son.
6. Do you think modern lifestyles give people enough time for leisure?
Oh, definitely not, you know, a modern lifestyle brings people more
convenience, however, in this modern fast paced society the fierce
competition makes more people spend more time at work, resulting in less
quality time with family and friends.
Yes, definitely. After a tiring week, people really need to relax. Apart from
earning money, I still need to enjoy my family time, hang out with friends to
socialise and travel around to experience different lifestyles.
8. Do old people and young people spend their leisure time in the same
way?
Well, between the two, old people are fond of a slow-pace of life compared to
young people, for example, old people enjoy walking in the garden or chatting
with old friends, on the contrary, young people are fond of energetic activities
such as football and hiking in the mountains.
9. How do people in your country spend their holidays?
Well, it's kind of hard to say but people that I know around me tend to hang
out with friends for dinner, but maybe for others, they will probably go
shopping with family in the shopping malls to enjoy themselves.
10. If you had a child, what leisure places would you go to with your
child?
Well, I'm really into taking my kid travelling around to the natural places
around here during the weekends to relax. Although travelling to other places
is really time consuming, I still like going out because I believe that staying
close to the nature can cultivate people' s mental development
11. Compare the way old people and young people spend their leisure
time.
let my hair down (idiom): to allow yourself to behave much more freely
than usual and enjoy yourself
postgraduate (n): a student who has already got one degree and is
studying at a university for a more advanced qualification
Yes, I write emails as part of my job to my clients on a daily basis. There are
many things I have to write, for example, I usually write end user training for
my clients to teach them how to use the system, or I write a development
guide for my technical staff to tell them how to code.
If I had to choose between the two, I'd probably go with writing with a
computer. In this age of fast living and convenience, writing things with a
computer is more efficient. Whereas, handwriting is really time consuming and
hard to share.
Well, between the two, a letter is printed or handwritten on actual paper and
sent through the mail while an email is typed on a computer, tablet or
Smartphone and sent electronically. While emails have become a more
popular way of communication for individuals and businesses, traditional
letters still have a place in today's modern, tech-oriented society.
Well, as 1 was saying emails have had a big effect on Chinese culture
already. We younger people want to reach out to not just the ones that
are in our neighborhood or even in our city but to those that are all over
the world. You know, for a long time China was closed to the West and
Western culture, now that it has opened its doors there have been many
changes, and writing emails is one of them. Emailing is more than just
writing : it really is a way of life, and this way of life wasn’t available here in
China before.
• 17. Do you think handwriting will still he an important skill in the future?
• Well in China right now the written characters arc important for many
things, such as billboards and small business signs But now’ that
computers are being made with Chinese character inputs, the actual
writing out of them is no longer necessary. I think there will come a lime
in the future when writing the characters by hand will be a lost ail. sad to
say, as writing characters by hand is an art form here in China.
Computerization is moving in and taking over, so for the sake of speed
we will see the slower methods of communicating—such as handwritten
characters—become a lost art and a casualty of modern times.
Well, if I had to choose between the two, I will probably go with writing
an email because I can spend plenty of time thinking about how to
express my opinions correctly and clearly, besides, the whole
conversation can be tracked in the electronic mail : whereas, you know,
making a telephone call usually leads to misunderstanding because
sometimes it is not very clear and things get missed
2. Do Chinese people change jobs very often? Do you think that’s good?
Yes I think that Chinese do change their jobs pretty often, and I think that it is
a good thing. Until you really find a job that you feel comfortable with, then I
think it is okay to change jobs. Some Chinese and people around the world
have to change jobs because they get laid off or their company gets gobbled
up by some big corporation, and they are forced to leave.
Of course they could give a lot of money, but I know that this is not always
practical. I think that one thing that would really help people stay in a job is
that they are shown some appreciation for what they do. I read that a lack of
appreciation is one reason that people go from job to job and just can’t seem
to find a home. I think if employers would just listen to their employees about
their need, that would be a big help, too.
Well. I think that people are just looking for their groove and where they
belong. Now that the opportunity is there to travel, people want to take
advantage of it, and see where their fortunes lie. There is a big world out there
and some people want to find out if it is their “cup of tea” as they say. I hate to
use so many idioms and I hope that I am using them right, but some people
just have the proverbial “grass is greener on the other side of the fence”
syndrome. They think that once they get there, all their problems will be over.
Well. I guess that one of the biggest ones is that you arc going to a different
culture, and you are not sure how you are going to lit in. In most countries one
of the hardest things to deal with is prejudice. People always seem to have a
little suspicion of foreigners in their country. I think that loneliness would he
another thing that would he hard for someone working or studying overseas. A
person would be away from family and friends, and that would be difficult.
Yes I think the price is an extremely big deciding factor. Take the World
Master’s Cup inShanghai, for instance. If the admission fee was only 100
RMB, more than half of Shanghainese could’ve attended the game.
4. What about the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing — what do you think
would be a reasonable price for admission tickets?
I’m not really sure, I haven’t thought about it that much, but I’d prefer if they
were free so then maybe I’d be able to go. My best guess is that they will
probably go for at least a few hundred yuan a ticket. People from all over the
World and China will be coming to Beijing and they will have money, so I don’t
think price will be a huge problem.
• There's increasing demand for cars that are more economical on fuel.
• What's the most economical way of heating this building?
I think most Chinese people are more concerned with local news and
domestic news, which I’d imagine is the same across the world. Unless there
are huge stories going on elsewhere, local news has more of an impact on the
average citizen. Also, it is easier to understand news that is about areas that
you know as opposed to some town in a country you might not even have
heard of.
I think if you are looking lo gel a general idea about the day’s news, TV is a
perfect way. You can get the basics from TV. If you want 10 get in-depth
information, however, newspapers arc the way to go. They can dedicate more
time to each individual story, so you can learn more about different subjects.
4. How do you think the news media will change in the future?
News in the future, I think, will come from many more directions. With the
creation of blogs, more people are able to report on many different things, so
you will see a lot more news and a lot more analysis. I don’t think there is any
way that newspapers will be able to compete with this. If people have to
choose between getting more news for free online and to pay, they are going
to choose lo go online.
5. Are young and old people interested in the same news content?
I think this question partially depends on how old young people are. If they are
in their twenties, I think for the most part, the news they are interested in is the
same. Younger people do seem to be more interested in tilings like celebrities
and pop culture than older people, but 1 think they stay pretty educated about
the more important news. Older people are less concerned with the pop
culture news, and are more concerned with the news that matters more to the
world and their country.
I firstly started to learn maths when I was in the first grade in primary school. I
was about seven years old then.
To be honest, I disliked maths because there were always too many abstract
formulas I had to remember. You know, I was not good at memorising things,
so I often used the incorrect formula in the exams, and made lots of mistakes
and got low marks as a result.
My maths teacher was an elderly woman. She was very kind and patient, but
she always tended to be demanding with us, she seemed to like making the
simplest theory very complicated. She also likes giving us endless homework
to do.
Yes, I'm afraid that I wasn't quick at figures. And I was also bored with these
abstract formulas and found it hard to pick the appropriate ones to solve the
maths problems in exams.
Well, there are many things I have to remember to do every day. For example,
after getting up in the morning, I need to do simple physical exercises like
crunches and push-ups. Besides, another important thing to keep in mind is to
teach my son to read traditional Chinese poems in the evening.
Frankly speaking, I suppose it has to be at least once every two hours, which
is quite often. I don’t think that’s a big issue since I am a woman and every
woman makes great effort to maintain her best look, especially in public.
Furthermore, mirrors are placed almost everywhere such as in the restrooms,
in a working place as decorations, which is too tempting for me to ignore.
A girl couldn’t survive without a decent pocket mirror which is portable and
convenient bring along anywhere. Collecting these small pieces of art is one
of my hobbies, too. Whenever I am in good mood, I usually wander around
some flea markets to pick up some of these vintage, yet tasteful accessories
for myself or as gifts for friends and family. There are at least ten pocket
mirrors in my possession which are beautifully designed with different unique
patterns.
It’s safe to say architects and interior designers are making full use of mirrors
in house building and decorating thanks to their inherent characteristics and
wide application. Hence, there’s no doubt that mirrors are indispensable
decorations in any constructions. For example, they can be installed in
bathrooms or dressing rooms for personal use or sometimes, small pieces of
mirrors are placed randomly in someone’s house or stores as a mere artwork.
Jobs like designing and repairing computer software, lawyers, doctors and
surgeons, building designers, scientists, and Hollywood actors arc some
better paying jobs. All these jobs require years of study, research, and lots of
experience in that field.
2. What occupations do you think will get high salary in the future?
People who are multilingual will be highly sought after in the future. As the
world is becoming more international, people who speak more than 2
languages fluently will be greatly needed. English is the main international
language right now. but there are billions of extremely intellectual individuals
who can’t speak or understand English. These people don’t want to get left
out of all the fun and games that are happening in the rest of the world, so
they need translators who will be able to make them understood by people of
different races.
3. Is pay the most important factor in your job?
banquet (n): a large formal meal for many people, often followed by
speeches in honour of someone
I think the reason is simply because money equals power. The more money
you have ,the more things you can do ,the more influence you have over
people. No one refuses power so that’s why they give priority to money
Absolutely. I can buy things with money and give presents for my family by my
own money. It makes my life more meaningful . It’s like a motivation to (1)
push me forward and work harder to enhance my life. For me, money is just
never enough and if I’m satisfied with what I earn, I’ll (2) fall behind with
fellows
I suppose it’s up to different purposes. While the young save money for
travelling or paying tuition fees, the elderly tend to keep money for health
service and their kids. However, young people have more (1) desire than (2)
the seniors so they often spend more than their (3)savings.
5. Do you think children are given too much pocket money in China?
Vocabulary and Useful Expression:
It really depends on how much they’re getting. Some kids definitely get
way more than they need, and others don’t get enough. There are some
families where the parents hardly have enough money to pay their bills
and get food : I don’t think these families should feel obliged to give their
children money that they don’t have. But if they do have money, then it would
be nice to give at least some spending money to their children.
• 6. How do you think parents could teach the value of money to their
children?
• 7. Do you think it is important to let children learn money skills?
• 8. Do you think people should he paid extra when they work overtime?
• I think that’s a wonderful idea. If all kids knew how to do banking, open
a savings account and cash checks, their parents would have a lot more
leisure time. And even if the parents still do the banking, at least when
their kids grow up they won’t be totally helpless. In fact, they’ll have a
big jump on the other kids their age.
• If you give your children only a small amount of money each week then
they’ll have to learn to make it last. It might take a while for them to
learn, and they might be broke for the first few months, but after a while
they’ll realize that money doesn’t grow on trees and will respect its
value. Of course there are children who always want everything they
see, and if the parents give it to them then the kids won’t value money
at all.
• If you pay someone extra to work overtime then you’re, in a sense,
giving them an incentive to work harder. When the work day is over,
most people just want to go home and relax. Some people are
workaholics and don’t think anything of working until 3 or 4 in the
morning and getting up at 6 a few hours later to go back to work. But
these people are rare. So if you want more people to work later an
overtime bonus is a very good idea.
There are a lot of museums in Nanjing because Nanjing has a central place in
the history of China. It allows the local residents to know more about their
traditions and historical celebrities.
I go to the museums a lot, when I go to a new place, I'll find the local
museums that have interesting features. The museum I visited last time was
the Guanfu Museum located in the rural area of Beijing. It is a private-owned
museum featuring Chinese antiques like porcelain, furniture, jade and some
paintings.
Yes, the reason is that generally, most museums are non-profit organisations,
and these goods make up a large part of their income, except for the tickets of
course, and also partly because these items are closely related to the theme
of the museums, which cannot be bought in other bookstores or shops.
Yes, there are many. In the places that I’ve been most of the museums are
about dinosaurs or stars. There are also some marine, bird and insect
museums. Often there’s a little bit of all of them mixed into one museum.
6. Are museums popular in China?
Not so popular. They are mostly for children or students. Sometimes you will
see a whole family go to a museum or perhaps a young couple, but it is quite
rare. Sometimes grandparents would take their grandchildren there.
I think if the museums had more interactive exhibits, then they would be more
interesting for most people. It would also help people to leant more from
actually being able to see first-hand what is happening and how different
things work. Having exhibits that change each week or so would make people
who have already been there want to go again to sec something new. Also
people who have not gone yet would want to go as soon as they can so they
don’t miss something, whereas if it’s always the same then they would put it
off, thinking they catch it later.
I think it’s not a good idea for people to have to pay all the time. I think it’s a
good idea for part or most of the museum to be free, but if people want to sec
certain parts or participate in special things, then they have to pay. If people
have to pay each time they go, and especially if it’s expensive, then many
won’t go or won’t go very often. The reason why I think this is bad is that I
think it’s very educational to he able to look at and learn from all the tilings in
museums.
I think that museums will become more modernized and more accurate. I think
that they will have better and more interesting exhibits. The way they are set
up and advertised I think will also improve so that they are more appealing to
the general public. I think they will also have more interesting themes
displayed and exhibited.

museum featuring Chinese antiques like porcelain, furniture, jade and some
I quite like my name, and I won't change it for the world, because it is unique. I
don't think that anyone else in China has the same name. It's part of my
identity, and it is meaningful to me.
People in my country pay great attention to their names because they believe
that suitable names will bring them good fortune. Sometimes they even
change their names for their business and family purpose.
In China, I believe that fathers are in the position of naming their children.
Sometimes they will look through some Chinese classical literatures to seek
the meaningful words for their children.
Unlike newspaper, I’m a fan of magazines. I’d like to keep myself updated with
a wide variety of information that is offered by magazines. A colorful magazine
specialized for young adults is definitely a good choice for me after work, or
even when I’m on the go.
I think local news is more preferable for me. I’m the type of person who cannot
digest too much information that is brought about by international news. And
the topics are often far from my concern. So I guess I like to narrow my area
of concern down to something local.
6. In the future, do you think more people than today will read
magazines, or fewer people?
Personally I think less people will read magazines, as the material and printing
is becoming more and more expensive. In addition, because the content is
becoming highly specific for only a small group of the community, meaning
that the information provided is not widely helpful, thus I think in the future not
many people will continue reading magazines.
Although it’s not my taste, I must say that newspaper is now important to me.
The information is highly official and reliable at a reasonable price. I think I
should spend more time on reading newspaper from now on.
I'm more interested in newspapers that write about foreign cultures. I like to
learn about their religions, customs, and the foods they eat. Occasionally,
foreign news interests me, too. I also really like reading scientific related
news.
9. How old were you when you first started to read newspapers?
Well, if I had to choose between the two, I#ll probably go with reading
domestic news because it is closer to home, and it affects me more :
whereas, you know, international news sometimes have nothing to do with my
daily life, so I just read the headlines.
• 13. What are some methods that newspapers use to attract readers?
• 14. What influence do you think newspapers have on society?
• 15. Do you think the Internet is a good way to get news?
• Well, I feel that newspaper publishers always try to use bold headings,
attractive advertisements, and insights in the article to get the readers'
attention.
• Well, I guess that newspapers have a great influence on society.
Newspapers keep people informed about the economy, politics, science
and education. Also, it tells us something about our society and the
country. Moreover, it also helps to educate people about their rights and
duties.
• Yes, getting news from the Internet is popular now because it's very
convenient to get news from the Internet via a mobile phone. The news
apps on my mobile phone usually send me the most urgent notifications
so it keeps me posted minute by minute.
convenient (adj): suitable for your purposes and needs and causing the least
difficulty
uncomfortable (adj): not feeling comfortable and pleasant, or not making you
feel comfortable and pleasant
• I've eaten so much, I actually feel uncomfortable.
It’s really hard for me to say no. I mean, I really can’t bear noisy people, noisy
places or even noisy things. For me noise is the number-one distractor when it
comes to studying or working. You know, they actually just go ahead and
interrupt my flow of thoughts.
Well, I have to say that I face up to a rich variety of noises on a daily basis.
The first type of noise is from traffic, especially during the rush hours. The
second is noise from factories, construction sites which never fail to distract
me from working, thereby reducing my productivity.
I think there is one sound that can always lull me to sleep, the rain sound.
There are nights I was so stressed out that I can hardly sleep no matter how
much I tried, and then I went online searching for some sound for deep sleep
or relaxation, and rain sound is always one of the top choices. And since then
rain sound has become my go-to on sleepless nights.
From a number of sources. It can come from the crazy drivers down there on
the streets. It can come from a building being built. It can come from a music
festivals or a DJ party where the crowd totally go wild. It can even come from
a crying baby or a fight nextdoor.
Most cities in our country are suffering serious noise pollution due to rapidly
increasing population and a massive amount of daily transportation. The
consistently intense presence of noise does serious harm to the public health.
Sadly I must say no. Since getting outdoor involves choosing clothes, meeting
people and sometimes standing the weather, so most of the time I’d prefer
staying inside. If I’m free I can invite some friends to come over. We can still
have fun without going out.
For the past few weeks I’m so busy that I hardly have time to go on my
photography tours. Previously I get outside three times a week and depending
on the weather condition, I could go out more or less often than that.
As I’ve already mentioned, I’m quite busy these days for any physical
exercises. If going to the supermarket or go window-shopping are also
considered as ‘getting outdoors’ then yeah, I guess I get outdoor once a week.
9. Would you say people spend more time outdoors today than they did,
say, 20 years ago?
• 10. Are there any outdoor activities that many people used to do but
which most people don’t do now?
• 11. What are the most popular outdoor activities in your country?
• 12. Do old and young people like doing the same kinds of activities
outdoors?
• It really depends on the people playing sports, because some old
people are very til and can keep up with the younger ones quite well.
But for the most part old people generally don’t exert themselves
physically as much us the younger ones do. They’d much rather take a
walk or play badminton than climb a mountain or play a full-court game
of basketball.
• Many people enjoy playing badminton, riding bicycles, and walking.
Some sports that have been adopted from other cultures are also
popular, such as basketball, tennis, and track spoils. One outdoor
activity that most people, both old and young like is table tennis, it is a
national sport in our country so it’s not really surprising that so many
people enjoy playing it.
• One of the main ones that l can think of is walking People still walk, but
not in the same proportion that they used to years ago. Walking used lo
be the main source of travel, unless you could afford a horse, donkey,
or mule. But now with cars, buses, and the Internet, people do a lot less
walking to gel to work, the store, or wherever they need to go.
exert (v): to use something such as authority, power, influence, etc. in order to
make something happen
• If you were to exert your influence they might change their decision.
• Some managers exert considerable pressure on their staff to work extra
hours without being paid.
1. How do you think climate and the environment affect what activities
people do outdoors?
If we had more trees and plants around the city then the air would be a
lot fresher. There needs to be some kind of quality control on vehicles
that are going around the city, some of those farm tractors are blowing
out black smoke that suffocates anybody who’s nearby. The sad thing is
that people in my hometown are so accustomed to the environment
being bad that they don’t really care about changing it : they just want to
do what’s easiest, even if it means mining their health and slowly killing
themselves.
bronchitis (n): an illness in which the bronchial tubes become infected and
swollen, resulting in coughing and difficulty in breathing
suffocate (v): to (cause someone to) die because of not having enough
oxygen

Drawing has always been a passion since I was a child. It was a good
opportunity for me to have drawing a compulsory subject in my primary and
secondary school. Although as a university student, I can’t spend hours on
drawing, once I have inspiration, I would definitely manage my time to draw.
Additionally, I’m not good at painting so I think drawing is fairly enough.
To tell you the truth, I have never visited art galleries before. Unless I have a
guide to acknowledge me, art galleries would be quite boring for me.
I think I must say it’s even challenging to a lot of people. I absolutely failed
when it comes to drawing anything ‘real’ like people, trees and flowers. I think
for those who succeed in drawing or arts in general, they first must have God-
gifted taste of arts, then comes the long-term commitment that requires
extreme practice and high patience.
inspiration (n): someone or something that gives you ideas for doing
something
• The golden autumn light provided the inspiration for the painting.
I think the number of Chinese who like pets is less than half the total
population. Many Chinese are afraid of common pets. I think it’s very funny,
but some are really scared of animals, even very tiny and harmless ones. This
may be because of something in their childhood, I don’t know. There are
many people in China who like pets, but not the majority, for sure.
2. What kinds of pets are most popular in China?
Dogs and cats arc by far the most common. I think the single most common
pet is either the Pekingese dog or the Pug dog. I think they are both quite
ugly, but sometimes they’re so ugly they’re cute. A lot of people also keep
guard dogs to protect their property.
A pet can be a good friend: sometimes the best friend. Pets are also great
playmates for children. 1 think it’s very good for kids to have a pet when
growing up. The disadvantages are that pets arc expensive to feed and care
for, and require a lot of time, depending on the kind of pet.
4. Do you think there should be laws to protect the welfare of pets and
farm animals?
I don’t really know. I guess there should be laws, but we really shouldn’t need
them. People should be responsible enough to treat pets and farm animals
well. But since many people are too selfish to care, we must have some laws.
But the laws shouldn’t become so important that they nearly equal laws
protecting the welfare of human beings.
If it were 3 to 4 years ago the answer would be a big no. But now it has
become one of my hobbies and I’m actually thinking of learning more about it.
I had no idea what I can do with my iPhone until I learned to make use of its
wonderful camera as well as some miracle apps. Unlike some people, I
indeed want my photos to look unique, lively and a little bit professional.
The situation was quite all of a sudden. I posted some scenery photos I took
on the spur of the moment on Instagram and received lots of compliments,
even from those whom I’m not following. Then I realized I should develop this
skill, you know, should take it seriously and keep up the good work. And the
more I learn about it, the more passionate I become.
It would be way more comfortable taking photos myself, as I can see crystal-
clear how ridiculous my face expression looks like or if there’s something on
my hair or stuck between my teeth. And in case it’s a scenery photo, I can
apply the techniques I’ve learned to produce stunning photos.
Since my parents love decorating our house, putting photos nicely on the
walls of my house is an essential part of their decoration style. Some photos
go with frame or plastic cover, some are sticked directly onto the wall in heart-
shaped. However, it’s quite ridiculous for me to see myself grinning
everywhere in the house so I told them to let me decorate my room on my
own.

Just recently. As a final year student, I no longer can spend hours on drawing,
reading or singing. Only photography which is way more instant suits me now
to document my life. And as I enjoy my life on this campus, for example the
road I walk to school everyday, the sunset, the rainbow, the trees,
photography is the best way to store my memories.
As I’ve mentioned, I snap a photo of anything that catches my eyes when I’m
in a good mood. So I take photos when my friends and I hang out or when I
participate in social activities of the university and meet amazing people.
However, when it comes to practicing for professional photography, I prefer
taking photos of scenery and foods.
Food and scenery are definitely my inspiration. I just can’t sit still when
beautiful breakfasts and stunning landscape keep appearing on my Instagram
everyday. What is more, it is my natural instinct that helps me to go find the
simple uniqueness of my university, namely the sunset, the lake, the trees and
flowers and show people how beautiful my university is. However, I’m not
good at taking photos of people so actvities or street-life is not my style.
The situation was quite all of a sudden. I posted some scenery photos I took

even from those whom I’m not following. Then I realized I should develop this
skill, you know, should take it seriously and keep up the good work. And the
more I learn about it, the more passionate I become.
Not too often I must say. Since I really don’t like posting boring photos with the
same object all the time, so timing is everything. I believe my guts will know
exactly when and how I should flick to produce high-quality photos.
I think I’m gonna go for taking scenery photos. As a beginner, the knowledge
of human facial expression, the part that needs focus, the harmonization
between them and their surroundings are a bit too advanced for me. I can’t
really make the person in my photo become lively as I do with the scenery.
Besides, looking at the beauty of nature and capturing it is kind of mind-
purifying to me and is a good way to escape from the artificial world. So yeah,
scenery is safer and more enjoyable.
Printing the photos out, making an album or sticking them on the wall for
decoration sound so common and also interesting. But I don’t think photos are
worth that much time and budget, unless what I captured is apparently
important to me, otherwise I only keep them in my iPhone.

13. Do you frame (or have you framed) any of your photos?
Although I don’t usually print my photos out, I think I would store some photos
of me with my high school friends or me with my family. And framing helps
preventing scratching and is good for long-term storage, so this is probably a
good alternative beside albums.
Mind-purifying (adj): make your mind naturally pure, free from negative
thoughts
Well actually both are much needed in society. It seems to me that practical
skills such as knowing how to cook a meal or clean a house or take care of
children arc slipping, whereas academic skills such as teaching a class or
doing research seem to be on the rise. This is not bad in itself because there
need to be people who are thinking about how things work and how to
improve them, but the skills needed for everyday life shouldn’t be looked on
as any less important than others.
A lot of these skills can be learned at home with their mother and father and
family. Skills such as sewing, budgeting or maintenance can be learned from
an aunt or uncle, grandfather or grandmother. If more difficult trades want to
be learned, such as plumber or electrician or mason, there are vocational
schools that could leach those. The main thing to learning a skill is the
motivation that is involved.
I’m afraid that there are not many. Academics are stressed so highly in
schools that they seem to overshadow practical skills. I suppose students
probably leant to listen to their teacher and how to behave and sit for long
periods at a time and apply themselves. They also have to learn how to
interact amongst themselves in a satisfactory way. They have to learn how to
get up on time and be at their school, which teaches them responsibility. I
guess it would help to define what practical skills we are talking about.
5. How useful will these skills be to the children alter they leave school?
Well as I was saying in the previous question, these skills would be very
helpful to children after they leave school. When a teenager goes from high
school to college he has to start managing things on his own without the
security of mom and dad. Even more so when a young adult graduates from
college or university, he would also be very grateful to have some practical
knowledge on how to survive in the working world.

I think that children should learn practical skills at school. This would help to
prepare them for life outside of school. A lot of times not much thought is put
into how to manage money or take care of an apartment but I think these skills
would be helpful. Life in the working world can be a lot different than the
sheltered life of schooling, so having some practical skills such as those
learned from a part-time job would be beneficial to a student.

Many Chinese arc only now beginning to learn about the importance of
protecting wild animals, as well as the environment they live in. The new
generations arc being taught to respect wild animals. But people never even
see them except on TV, so they only have a vague idea of the need to protect
them. I admire the many brave people who have made sacrifices to protect
wild animals, like the Kekexili mountain patrol. There was a recent movie
made about them.
I’m not sure what benefits there arc. but I know that everything in nature is
there for a reason. If one species dies out, it can upset the balance of nature
and do a lot of damage in the long run. Wild animals don’t always directly
affect people, but often, they fill a special role in the balance that we are also
part of, and affect other species or plants that we are directly dependent on.
So we should protect them, because we may lie protecting ourselves without
knowing it. in the long run
Zoos are really a compromise, I think. They are a way for people who live in
the city, especially children, to sec wild animals. But 1 think that unless the
zoos are the best quality, they shouldn’t be operated, as it’s cruel to keep wild
animals in small cages or dirty surroundings. High standard zoos can be
good, as they educate the general public about the world around them. But 1
still think it would be better if people could leant about animals straight from
nature, not seeing them in zoos, compromise.
• Without any doubt I would say motorbikes. You can see people driving a
motorbike all over the place in my country. Almost everyone travels by
motorbike. The reason why motorbike is so popular I think is due to their
reasonable price and convenience. They also extremely varied in terms
of size, color and quality, thus a wide variety of choices is available for
everyone.
• 2. How often do you take buses?
• Almost every day. Since my house is so far away from my university, it’s
impossible for me to travel by motorbike. In addition, the air is heavily
polluted by exhaust fumes and traffic jams always take place, especially
during peak hours. Thus, I’d prefer to take the bus, to save time, save
gasoline and causing less pollution.
• 3. Can you compare the advantages of planes and trains?
• Planes and trains regularly depart and arrive on time. Plus, there are
many convenient facilities catering particularly to certain groups of
passengers. However, traveling by plane is clearly time-saving and
enjoyable in terms of on-board services like meals or comfortable seats,
while traveling by train offers you a chance to see the world outside,
admire the views from their seats. It’s totally a great experience for most
train-travelers.
• 4.How much time do you spend travelling on a normal day?
• I have to commute from my home to my workplace on a daily basis. It
normally takes me 30 minutes to travel back and forth.
• 5. Would you ride bikes to work in the future?
• I think buses will take the lead. You can travel the distance without
much worries about ticket price or rainy weather outside. Also new
buses now offer better services like comfortable seats for the elderly or
good air conditioning systems.
• 7. Do you prefer public transport or private transport ?
• I think I’d prefer public transport. It’s much more inexpensive and
because it can contain a large number of people, it helps ease the
intensity of traffic jams during peak hours and reduce the greenhouse
gas emissions caused by vehicles. Private transportation is more costly
in terms of fees, taxes and gasoline.

Vocabulary and Useful Expression:
A wide variety of (collocation): a number or range of things of the same
general class that is distinct in character or quality.
Yeah, I think it definitely is, because it's basic good manners to be on time for
things. You know, I think you'd agree it's pretty rude to keep people waiting,
and so it kind of gives a bad impression about that person.
Well I guess it kind of depends, because I mean, if there's a good reason for
being late, you know, like getting stuck in traffic, then I will not really mind that
much. But you know, if the person does not really have any excuse and it's
simply because they could not be bothered to arrive on time, then I suppose I
might feel a bit annoyed.
No, I would not say I am. You know, most of the time I'm pretty good with
being on time for things, because I always make a quite big effort not to be
late.
I feel pretty bad, especially if I've kept the other person waiting for a long time.
So if I know I’m gonna be late, I will always try to let the person know in
advance, you know, like send them a text message or something, so at least
they know when to expect me.
I guess the best thing to do would be to always allow lots of time to get
anywhere. So for example, if it normally takes me, say, half an hour to get to
the city centre, then I should probably leave home about an hour before I
need to get there.
7. When does time SEEM to move fast, and when does it SEEM to move
Slowly?
Well, I think most people would agree that time moves fast when you're
having fun. A prime example would be when playing computer games, cos I
mean, whenever I play online with my friends, it always seems that only an
hour or two has passed, but in actual fact, it's probably been four or five hours!
And time normally goes slowly when you're bored or simply just not enjoying
yourself. For example, I remember at school, some of my classes felt like they
would never end, when in fact they were just, like, 45 minutes long!
8. If you could go back in time, what would you do differently?
That's a good question. What would I do differently? Um ... ok well first of all, if
I could go back in time, I would definitely spend more time practicing the
piano, because you know, I never really practiced that much when I was
younger, and I kind of regret it now, because I'd love to be able to play the
piano well

Vocabulary and Useful Expression:
end up (phrasal verb): to finally be in a particular place or situation
1. Does it rain much in your country? (Where? When?)
I would say yes. It rains a lot in the summer when tropical storms strike our
country. There is torrential rain in the region in June, July and August, and the
rainfall tends to be higher in the North than in the South.
To tell you the truth, I have no clue about this. I do not give a hoot about
geography and the amount of rain in my country. I think the most rainfall is in
the North where there is an intricate system of rivers.
Well, it depends on the season. In winter and spring, there is a dearth of rain
associated with the arid weather. In contrast, it is usually raining cats and
dogs in summer and august, causing loads of troubles for people travelling on
the road.
4. Can you remember any time when it rained particularly heavily in your
hometown?
That would be last summer. I was going to work and then all of a sudden it
started to rain, followed by a deluge. I was soaked to the skin and couldn’t
attend a very important meeting.
5. Does rain ever affect transportation in your hometown?
Yeah, of course. Traffic is often held up when it rains. All the roads are
clogged, and people find it difficult to escape from traffic congestion. I would
stay at home and watch TV rather than going out and being caught up in
traffic.
clog (v): to (cause something to) become blocked or filled so that movement
or activity is difficult
intricate (adj): having a lot of small parts or details that are arranged in a
complicated way and are therefore sometimes difficult to understand, solve, or
produce

Yes, I'm really into reading because I believe that reading can be both
entertaining and educational. Reading broadens my knowledge by opening up
the whole world to me. While I'm reading, I can be visiting another country or a
different time period, or travelling through space. I can find out how people
solved problems or think up new ideas.
Oh, it's a tough question, or it should be more of what books I don't read. I
have a really open mind towards books and what genre they are. Classic
literature, novels, autobiography, historical story - whatever I love reading
them all.
Yes, I remember when I was a kid, I'd like to take some historical books from
my father's bookshelf, and read the historical stories, which were really
entertaining and educational for me. As a result, I'm very familiar with our
ancient Chinese history.
It's kind of hard to say but young children that I know tend to read fairy tales to
cultivate their mental development, but maybe for others, they just want to
watch TV and play with their toys.
I believe if you want your children to be smart, they have to acquire a love for
reading, which has numerous benefits. Reading opens the door to a child's
early academic success, imparts a love of learning and leads to higher grades
in every subject. Besides, reading can help children improve linguistic skills in
the form of a richer vocabulary, correct grammar, and more articulate oral
communication. On top of that, books teach child about relationships,
situations, personalities, and what is good and what is bad in the world he/she
lives in.
No. The interests of young and old vary’ greatly. Young people mostly like
fantasy and fiction best. Older people often prefer serious or historical works.
I think martial arts stories are favorites. Some Chinese classics arc famous
and widely read as well. Of course, knowing what is the favorite of many
people is difficult.
Today education is widely available so many people can read. Also, these
days, printing is faster than it once was so many books of different kinds can
be printed. In the past fewer people could read and there were fewer books so
people enjoyed and appreciated reading more. Modern inventions have also
made more time for reading.
10. How do von think reading habits will change in the future?
I am not sure. Maybe reading will become more widespread. Maybe it will
become less common as new technology, such as virtual reality, becomes
more readily available. Of course people who like to read simply because they
can get along with their thoughts will continue to read.
11. Do you think it’s a good idea to teach children to read when they are
very young?
Yes. They can learn more. Also they may he able to enjoy a new pastime.
Many children, instead of playing games which develop social skills or doing
things which promote good values such as reading good books, play
computer games and watch TV, which often causes anti-social behavior, anti-
social behavior.
Children especially enjoy reading stones. They also like reading books about
nature. If a book has pictures, children will really enjoy it. Many children like
reading stories with silly themes often because they were never given
anything else. If parents or teachers introduce their children to a wider variety
of choices, children will enjoy a broader range of books.
Some do and some do not. My parents read to me when I was a child, they
were teachers. Some of my friends’ parents did not read to them. In poor
families the parents may not be able to read at all. Of course with their parents
being so busy, to even have the time to read is a real challenge in this day
and age.
Children are very much affected by the stories their parents read to them.
These stories arc sometimes the first education a child receives. 1 can
remember many of the stories my parents first read to me. Values found in
children’s books will often affect the young readers. Because their parents are
reading the stories, the children will listen more.
On top of that, books teach child about relationships,
situations, personalities, and what is good and what is bad in the world he/she
lives in.

Only if I’m informed about the visit. I typically don’t like sudden visits that they
pay when I have to open the door in my pyjamas. That kind of visitors to me is
so impolite. Oh, and I also don’t like a big crowd visiting my place. They’re too
noisy and most of the time I’m afraid of my property secretly being stolen.
Both friends’ and relatives’ visits are meaningful to me. Since our relatives live
miles away, we really appreciate their efforts and time to visit us. My friends
actually only come when they’re invited, so we don’t have much problem with
time.
Well, If I’m in a good mood and not up to ears in work, I would rather pay my
relatives a visit or ask them out to a restaurant nearby to have a decent meal
together as well as to strengthen our relationship.
Yes, I do. I find them (1) intriguing as it reveals hidden secrets. I’m a (2)
curious person so science enables me to explain everything in logical way
2. What science subject at school do/did you like the most? [Why?]
I’m interested in chemistry and biology, because I love to find out how our
bodies work and get to know better the things that surround us daily. Those
subjects (1) excite me in a way that nothing can make and (2) I’m still into it
now.
I love working with something as(1) complex as the brain. We hardly know
how it works at all but every day we find out a little bit more and we can use
that information not only to help people who are sick but also in completely
different areas of science like (2) artificial intelligence
At some schools, science is taught poorly which (1) kills the student’s interest.
Science is supposed to (2) figure out the answers for mistery things but the (3)
lack of cutting-edge facilities in the lab makes it more difficult. Besides, lots of
experiments need to be taken so it takes lots of time to find true result.
I have a lifelong passion for shoes since I was a child. When I’m not
overloaded with work, I will go to the shopping complex to indulge myself in
tons of different stylish shoes. Until now I reckon that I spend much more
money on shoes than anything else.
Online shopping has never been more convenient and affordable and of
course, how can I possibly miss the opportunity to take full advantages from
many occasional big sales promotions, especially clothing and footwear.
Although buying shoes or any items online comes with the inability to actually
try them on, competitive prices, wide product ranges and other exclusive
customer’s experiences on some websites are quite attractive. Once I even
got my hands on a limited-edition pair of running shoes thanks to the
accumulated points I received from my previous shopping on an online store
and I have been their loyal customer ever since.
Affordable (a): cheap enough that people can afford to buy it or pay it
Footwear (n): things that people wear on their feet, for example shoes and
boots
I absolutely love singing. Although I just figured out my singing ability like 3 or
4 years ago and of course it’s not perfect, but singing to me is just to enjoy
music, you know, often when I’m into a song, I can’t help myself singing it day
and night.
I sing whenever I feel like to, you know, when I’m bored or when I’m happy.
And since I’m not that type of a so-called performer, most of the time I sing for
myself.
Indeed. Unless you have a beautiful voice as a Gift from God, or you at least
have gained yourself some basic knowledge about notes, vocal ranges and
beat, etc., that it’s easier for you to go further in your singing career, otherwise
yes, singing well would be a huge challenge.
Well, from what I’ve known, being a singer is not easy at all. It’s not just about
performing, but it’s also involved interaction with fans and other colleagues.
Based on what I’ve known about showbiz, and even the music industry in
general, I think that is not a place for me.
Yes, I am really into watching the sky especially at night to count the millions
of stars above. When I was a kid. I remember I sometimes laid down on the
grass for hours to watch the shining stars during the summer because I was
fond of imaging my favourite folk stories about the stars.
No, I have never been on any sort of courses about stars because actually
there were no such courses in the schools or university. But fortunately my
grandmother once sent me an encyclopaedia about nature in which there
were loads of stories about stars, I got most of my knowledge about the stars
from it.
Yes, I believe that astronomy has always had a significant impact on our world
view as it can help us open our eyes, give context to our place in the cosmos
and that can definitely reshape how we see the world.
My favourite star constellation is Orion. It's very easy to spot on winter nights.
Firstly, it has a huge red giant star, which may explode any time soon.
Besides, it has a massive blue star which is very young. On top of that it also
has a big nebula where new stars are being born - so it has everything!
constellation (n): any of the groups of stars in the sky that seem from earth to
form a pattern and have been given names
Yes, I guess elderly people do need to sleep more. I believe the reason is
that after years of working and stress the natural process breaks down a
person’s body until all they want to do is sleep : consequently, their bodies
take longer to recharge their batteries.
Yes, getting up early in the morning is really beneficial for our health,
because we can enjoy the fresh air in the morning : besides we have
plenty of time to do some physical exercises liking running and jogging. In the
morning I can also prepare a good dinner for the family.
One of the main challenges for small businesses is just staying open. Most
small businesses close within a year after they’re open, so if they get past that
hurdle the next most important thing that they’ll have to tackle is getting long-
term customers. Depending on what kind of business they’re starting they’ll
also have to advertise their products and services. Good advertisement is
really what makes the difference between the success and failure of their
business.
One advantage of having a small business is that you don’t have to be lied
down by company rules, regulations, and protocols. You are free to operate
as you please and don’t have to worn, about getting the approval of the CEO
or some other person higher up on the ladder than you. There are some
disadvantages, though, to having a small business. The main one is that if
you’re not careful, the big businesses will put you out of business by slashing
their prices or advertising heavily. You see, they can afford to make their
prices lower than yours simply because they have more money.
Small businesses are able to cater to the whims and wishes of the people that
they are near. They get to know’ their customers and can specialize in taking
care of them. Small businesses can even watch out for community members:
if they are used to seeing them and they notice a change in their routine, the
business could report this to someone who would lie concerned about them.
Having a small business, like a restaurant for instance, creates a family-like
feeling in the neighborhood, as opposed to going to McDonald’s for instance,
where they don’t know you from Adam.
I really don’t think there is any comparison. Small shops retain a personal
touch and give you the feeling that the owners are more than people who just
want to make money. Small businesses make you feel that you arc
contributing to keep the community going by shopping there. Of course the big
stores have a lot more variety and are able to have sales and cut their prices
when they need to.
Well you see them everywhere and new ones pop up almost daily, what are
they? Well, you guessed it, beauty salons and hairdressers and haircutters. If
you walk down any given street you will see one or two on each comer.
People arc much more interested in style and being in fashion, so that is why
these businesses are so popular. If you look around you will sec so many new
hairdos.
A small business owner would have to be diligent with his business, wanting
to make sure that things are done right, lie would need to have patience, the
ability to wait until the business starts succeeding. He would have to have
plenty of capital to get his business off the ground. A small business owner
would also have to have a sense of humor, to laugh when he feels like crying.
There is a lot more freedom here in China to start your own business and
make it succeed. There are a lot more small businesses than in the past.
Because of China’s entry into the WTO. there are a lot more products and
therefore more businesses. As I mentioned before, style is becoming more
popular so more businesses open to keep up with it.
9. How do you think small businesses will change in the future in China?
I think that people are working together more and want to gel their small
businesses going and progressing so that they can branch out and grow. You
will see small businesses Hexing their muscle in the rural areas and
expanding their support base. You will see small businesses affecting life
much more than they do now. Small businesses are the future of China and
will continue being so as time goes on.
hairdo (n): the style in which a person, especially a woman, has their hair cut
and arranged, especially if it is unusual or done for a particular occasion
• No, not really. I generally prefer to eat at meal times rather than graze
between meals.
• 1. Do you like snacks? (yes)
• Yes, I do. Around mid morning I usually have some fruit and then at
about 3pm I have some biscuits or something like that.
• 2. What kinds of snacks are popular in your country?
• Well, I guess that most people eat junk food like crisps, chocolate and
biscuits for their snacks. I suppose office workers mainly eat junk food
like biscuits but other people sometimes eat fruit or something healthier.
• 3. Do you think eating snacks is good for your health?
• I think that if you’re hungry, it’s perfectly fine to have some fruit but if
people eat junk food between meals, then it’s really unhealthy. I think all
kind of snacking between main meals is bad for your health. If people
avoided snacking, they would be much healthier and less over weight.
•
Vocabulary and Useful Expression:
graze (v): to break the surface of the skin by rubbing against something
rough
1. What kinds of social networking websites do you like to use?
It's undeniable that social networking sites have become a huge part in our
lives, especially young people's lives. I think am addicted to Facebook and
Twitter.
I love to make friends with people who have same interests as me such as
music, travelling and learning English
I think no, most of the friends I have on Facebook are just normal friends, it is
common that people just make friends for fun and sometimes will not even
meet face to face. But we do tend to share things a lot on social websites.
•
Vocabulary and Useful Expression:
outgoing (adj): friendly and energetic and finding it easy and enjoyable
to be with others
1. Do you like to watch sports on TV?
Yes, I sometimes play football in the morning with my friends in the garden
during the weekends to get some exercises.
•
flexibility (n): the quality of being able to change or be changed easily
according to the situation
• 1. What are the benefits of sport (0r exercise)?
• Exercise keeps you healthy. It’s been proven that people who exercise
more get sick less. When you exercise, it helps build your strength to
fight sickness. I have a friend who have a bad back, and if he doesn’t
run, play basketball, or exercise in some way then his back will go out
and he’ll have to stay in bed until it is better.
• 2. What kinds of sports facilities exist in your community?
• I don’t really think it’s good if children are taught at a young age to be
competitive. If you can teach the child how to play competitive sports
without stressing that winning is the only way that you can have fun then
I guess it’s okay. But personally I think that’s a bit unrealistic because
everyone wants to win, and if kids don’t win their natural reaction is lo
cry or gel mad. This doesn’t really help them in life. When they grow up
they’ll find that you don’t always win the first time around, you just have
to keep trying and keep going on with your life.
•
Vocabulary and Useful Expression:
assortment (n): a group of different types of something
At my school we really focus on the science subjects and English. Since most
students will apply to a foreign University
In my opinion business is probably the first choice for most students. Nearly
everyone wants to be rich so they think that majoring in business would help
them achieve this goal. I guess the second most prevalent subject would be
computing. You know many students like to play computer games so there is
no doubt that people are into that subject.
•
Vocabulary and Useful Expression:
opinion (n): a thought or belief about something or someone
1. How would you define success?
Hmm, there are so many ways to define it. I believe success is feeling my life
is worth living, and being a good person to those around sue. If I have a
partner, or children, or relatives dependent on me, I would consider it a
success if I were able to provide them with a good life style and everything
they need. Success would mean my reputation as a good person travels
ahead of me. II would mean I would have a goal and hope for life, and would
stand out amongst others.
I would imagine they do. But as I said, there are many ways to define
success, it is the inborn desire of a human to want to be the best they could
be, to want more. Everybody wants life to be worthwhile, they want their
husband or wife to be proud of them, they want their children to admire them,
and they want a sense of fulfillment. It’s natural.
Well I would say it’s after they realize that life is a struggle and that they must
make it on their own. When we are young we can depend on others and do
not feel the need to make something of ourselves. It’s when the pressure
kicks in and the understanding comes to us that we find we must choose for
ourselves whether we will be happy or sad. a success or a failure. When we
grow up and are more mature, we begin to have others depend on us, looking
to us, and we feel the responsibility to do our part in the world.
6. How should parents reward their children for success, for example,
for doing very well in exams at school?
I believe parents should give their child the sense that success is their reward.
They should help the children to feel a tense of pride in their accomplishments
and not always expect to receive a candy bat or a trip to the amusement park
for every good deed. It is true that children need encouragement, but they
should realize that the reason they worked for the goal score on the exams
was because learning is important and will help their lives to be better. They
should not be thinking. “I’m studying hard and getting a good score because
my mother promised me new toys or extra money.” They will never become
truly successful if they are dependent on that candy bar, or those new toys.
reputation (n): the opinion that people in general have about someone or
something, or how much respect or admiration someone or something
receives, based on past behaviour or character
I’d love to participate in some outdoor activities under the sun like meeting up
with some friends or do some sports, especially swimming. Or I’ll grab the
chance for a photography tour. Everything becomes so clear and stunning on
sunny days, no matter it’s early in the morning or late in the afternoon, as long
as the sun shines, I’m sure I’ll find inspiration almost everywhere.
It is a modern big city so unless it’s our rainy season, otherwise the sun would
shine most of the time, either during one day or the whole year. Sometimes
the temperature rises so high that it feels like burning, that’s when people
prefer staying indoor enjoying the cool air produced by air conditioners.
Yes I can. I learnt at school when I was about 7 years old. Swimming lessons
were compulsory at our school, like at most schools I think.
2. Are there many places to swim near you?
Yes, there are a few public swimming pools. There is the main indoor one at a
big sports complex in the centre of town. There are also a couple of outdoor
ones, but you can only use them in summer, as it is too cold in winter. There
is a big one in a park, whereas the other is much smaller.
Of course, I think it's very important to learn to swim. First, you might spend a
lot of holidays by water, for example, when you go to the beach or go to a
lake, so you won't be able to enjoy yourself with your friends if you can't swim.
Also, forsafety reasons it's very important. You often hear about accidents
involving young children so it's very important.
Swimming is not only one of the necessary survival skills but a great leisure
activity, hence, it would be both beneficial and pleasurable to know how to
swim. Every year, there are many heartbreaking accidents related to water
incidents and most of the victims cannot swim or are not good swimmers.
Thus, in order to ensure their own safety and help those in need, people
should be able to swim well.
It’s a dilemma. I like swimming in the ocean because it makes me feel close to
the nature and there’s more space for me to stretch my arms and legs.
However, if I have my private swimming pool, I’d love to swim in it because
the water is fresh and shallow so I can enjoy my time without worrying about
being drowned or swallowing the salty water.
Even though it would be ideal to have swimming pools or any other sport
facilities provided for free, I still think people should be charged upon entering.
If we don’t pay when using swimming pools, the authority will have to rely on
public spending to cover labor costs, renovation and so on, which can be used
in more meaningful activities such as helping the underprivileged or building a
new medical center. And anyway, entrance ticket to the pool is not that pricey
that people cannot afford.
Renovation (n): the act or process of repairing and painting an old building,
piece of furniture, etc. so that it is in good condition again
Survival skills (n): techniques that a person may use in order to sustain life in
any type of natural environment
Underprivileged (a): having less money and fewer opportunities than most
people in society => the underprivileged (n): people who are underprivileged
Yes, I‘m really into teaching. I have a life-long passion for becoming a
dedicated teacher who can helps thousands of students stay more focused on
their studies and inspire them to become well-behaved people.
Yes, I have been teaching for more than 8 years for roughly 500 students
since I embarked on my exciting teaching career. At first, I thought I couldn’t
be a good teacher and nearly give up on teaching because I felt it hard to get
across to my students. But you know, everything takes time. Now, I’m totally
confident in my teaching skills.
Embark on (verb): start a new project or activity, usually one that will be
difficult and will take time
Take time (phrase): If you say that something will take time, you mean that it
will take a long time.
Well-behaved (adj): behaves in a way that is polite or gentle and does not
upset people
The last time I worked in a team was a project I did during the second year of
my graduate school. Our tutor gave us an assignment to review the server log
of an international trade website and give a brief analysis using data
warehouse and data mining technology.
2. Do you like to work or study with others or just by yourself?
Personally, I would like to work in a team because I'd have partner to share
the responsibility with and we could solve problems better, as the saying goes
“Many hands make light work"
I think the most important thing for teamwork is deciding who does what.
Every member of team should be assigned specific tasks and he or she
should stick to that. Also team spirit is equally important
Honestly, I would like to be a leader. Being a leader would reflect the hard
work I’ve put into the job. I can win other peoples respect as well
I actually prefer watching TV to surfing the Internet due to its selectivity and
accessibility. Because the audience can be children, teenagers and families,
the content of TV programs is examine carefully and suitable time frame is
arranged in order to avoid having negative impacts on them.
I definitely did enjoy quite a lot of shows and programs, from music, movies,
fashion, news and scientific documentaries since the foreign are so good at
visual editings and content management. Most of them are in in English
because I’m more familiar with this language compare to French or Japanese.
5. What (types of) programmes did you watch when you were a child?
Like other children, I watched a number of cartoons and music programs for
children when I was a child. Tom and Jerry, Barbie, Disney series are my
favorite which still get me excited whenever I see them on TV now. My mom
said I also was kinda attracted to music programs for children that I focused
on them completely while eating.
Televisions indeed have been changing remarkably for the past few
years. The technology has become so innovative and competitive to
meet the customers’ high demand on entertainment. The variety of TV
programs is no longer limited to national level but has reached to a
number of foreign countries : and is significantly diversifying in content for
audience preference.
To meet one’s demand on Sth (v): to provide SO with Sth/to provide Sth for
SO
Yes, when my friends can't answer my call, I will text them to let them know I
called and wait for their reply.
2. Is there any chance when texting someone is better than calling him?
Yes, I remember when I had to refuse some friends requests I had to think
carefully for a long time about how to reply.
I send text messages almost on a daily basis. I always text my friends and
family to say hello, chat and make travelling plans.
Vocabulary and Useful Expression:
conference (n): an event, sometimes lasting a few days, at which there is a
group of talks on a particular subject, or a meeting in which especially
business matters are discussed formally
ingrained (adj): (of beliefs) so firmly held that they are not likely to change
I don’t usually make detailed plans for the work I’m doing, but I really like the
outline method, where you just list the main points and sub-points of your
project. Then you can clearly see what you need to accomplish and how
realistic your time frame needs to be. But for the most part I don’t particularly
like drawing detailed plans.
One advantage, like I said before, is that you can clearly see what it is you
need to accomplish and better plan about how much time you need to
accomplish it. Another advantage is that important details arc less likely to be
left out. Quite a few times I’ve had to go back and redo something that I was
working on just because I overlooked a small but important detail, which in the
end cost me a lot of extra time, and sometimes money. Thankfully I’ve been
getting better at time management and have fewer problems than before.
4. Do you use any special tools, such as a computer, to help you draw
up plans?
I’ve tried on several occasions to start a diary, but I usually forget about it after
a week or so. 1 think I’ve started about seven diaries in my life time, and the
longest one lasted for about 2 months. Diaries just don’t seem to work for me,
so I think I’ll spend my time doing more profitable things, like playing my
guitar. Maybe some day I’ll start a diary and actually keep it but for now I think
I’ll just stay away from them.
Definitely less! If anything, modern technology has sped time up with things
moving faster everyday. Because of email, now letters are able to be sent and
received and answers are expected right away sometimes. With
transportation, you can get to places faster and do a lot more. Things arc
actually moving incredibly fast, and that means less time for all.
2. Did people in the past lead a faster-paced life or a slower-paced life
than today?
Almost every day. Since my house is so far away from my university, it’s
impossible for me to travel by motorbike. In addition, the air is heavily polluted
by exhaust fumes and traffic jams always take place, especially during peak
hours. Thus, I’d prefer to take the bus, to save time, save gasoline and
causing less pollution.
I think I’d prefer public transport. It’s much more inexpensive and because it
can contain a large number of people, it helps ease the intensity of traffic jams
during peak hours and reduce the greenhouse gas emissions caused by
vehicles. Private transportation is more costly in terms of fees, taxes and
gasoline.
Exhaust fumes (n): waste gasses or air expelled from an engine, turbine, or
another machine in the course of its operation.
Greenhouse gas emissions (np): the emission into the earth’s atmosphere
of any of various gases, esp carbon dioxide, that contribute to the greenhouse
effect
Intensity (n): of extreme force, degree, or strength
Traffic jam (n): a line or lines of stationary or very slow-moving traffic, caused
by roadworks, an accident, or heavy congestion.
Well, between the two, travelling by plane is relatively very fast, for
example, it just takes three hours for me to go to Beijing but it is quite
expensive : on the other hand, travelling by trains is an increasingly cost-
effective alternative to planes, particularly if I'm going a relatively short
distance.
I think autumn is the best time to travel. As it is neither too hot nor too cold,
people feel comfortable enough to go out. Also, the foliage of trees will turn
yellow or red so you will see the beautiful colours of the trees all around you.
Wherever you go, you will have a memorable trip.
Yes, Chinese people are renowned for their hospitality to visitors. There are
numerous tourist attractions around the country. For instance, you can visit
the countryside to see the picturesque views, or you can visit historical relics
to get to know about the events that have shaped Chinas long history, or you
can just stay in the cities to experience how the local people live.
relic (n): an object, tradition, or system from the past that continues to exist
renowned (adj): famous for something
Yes, I am a tree lover because trees let me breath more easily, and without
them I couldn't survive much longer.
There are many important trees in my country. The use of bamboo, for
example, can be used for everything from furniture making to building
construction. Also, weeping willow trees symbolised new hope in ancient
China, therefore, there are many poems complimenting them.
erosion (n): the fact of soil, stone, etc. being gradually damaged and removed
by the waves, rain, or wind
sycamore (n): a tree with leaves divided into five parts and seeds that turn
around slowly to the ground when they fall
1. What#s your favourite vegetable and fruit?
My top three favourite fruits and vegetables are broccoli, celery and grapes
because all of them are both nutritious and delicious. Also, I want to give
mushrooms an honourable mention as they are one of my favourite things to
cook with, although they are a fungus.
2. How often do you eat fruits?
I eat fruit at home on a daily basis. I always buy a lot of different types of fruit
in the shopping mall at the weekends for my whole family.
Yes, we do. We really need to eat vegetables everyday because you simply
cannot find another food group that is as perfectly matched to our everyday
human needs. There are various proteins, fibre and vitamin that cannot be
found in other foods such as meat.
nutritious (adj): containing many of the substances needed for life and
growth
1. Do you often invite friends to visit your home?
I do but only when we have known each other well for quite a long time. As
most of my friends also enjoy staying inside like me, normally I just invite one
friend then we buy some snacks home and exchange some chitchat for hours.
I sometimes invite 3 to 4 friends so we can have a girl-night-in with movies or
a small pyjama party.
Since our relatives live
far away, we really appreciate their efforts and time to visit us. My friends only
come when they’re invited, so we don’t have much problem with time.
pyjama party (n): a social occasion when a group of friends, usually children
or young people, stay for the night at one person’s house
1. Do you think people in the past walked more than people, or less?
I think that yes, people in the past did more walking. People today have many
more distractions that occupy time that was once spent walking. They go on
the Internet, or watch TV, or play video games. In the past, there was less to
do, so people walked a lot more. Whether it was walking somewhere or
walking just to walk, I think they did a lot more.
I think that it is not really the standard of living that affects how much people
walk. As long as you are talking about walking for pleasure, I think the main
variable is how people value their time. For instance, rich, busy people and
poor people that have to work really hard to scrape by probably don’t have
that much time to walk. But people that value life more than money probably
walk more often because they want to enjoy themselves every once in a
while. If you are talking about all kinds of walking, though, rich people walk
less, obviously, because they can afford other modes of transportation.
3. How do you think the government could encourage people to walk
more?
In my opinion, the best way to get people to walk more would be to build more
places where people would enjoy walking. Parks or nice tree-lined streets
would be a good way to start. People are much more likely to walk in places
that are nice as opposed to places that feel grimy. Other than that, I think
most Chinese cities are pretty walker-friendly. Lots and lots of people walk
and that is a really good thing.
4. Can you think of any examples where people walk a lot while doing
their jobs?
Well, obviously, many postal workers must walk their routes in order to deliver
the mail. As for as other jobs where people walk a lot, though, I can’t think of
many: Different kinds of deliverymen and waiters and waitresses are the two
best examples of these kinds of jobs. Other than that, I don’t think companies
need employees to walk. It’s more efficient for them to either stay in one place
or to get around by other modes of transportation.
Yeah, lots of Chinese people go for walks. Any time I walk by a park late at
night, I always see people taking a stroll and looking pretty content. I think
they do it for the same reason people worldwide who live in big cities walk: it
feels good to get outside when they have been stuck inside all day. Also,
walking in parks gives people a taste of nature in a concrete world.
Walking does hits of things for your health. First, and perhaps now obvious, is
the physical benefits. Walking is exercise. which is important for everyone.
Just as important is the good walking does for your mind. For me at least,
when I can walk somewhere, it gives me a good opportunity to think about
things and not feel stuck inside. I get to feel the sun and the fresh air.
3. Do you think that playing sports is better for your health than
walking?
Walking and playing sports are both good for your body. They both improve
your physical health, though sport does a better job at that. When playing
sports, you are more active and your heart rate increases, so your body has to
work harder, which makes the exercise more beneficial. But, walking does a
lot of good for your mental health. It provides a great escape from the working
world, and gives the mind a good opportunity to just wander. So if measuring
just physical health, sports are better for your body, but if you look at mental
as well, they are equally good for your health.
• Say if I’m in a hurry, I just walk or run as fast as I can, no time for chit-
chat right? But even when there’s a plenty of time, walking is ideal to
calm down, breath in some fresh air and enjoy the world outside in
silence. Every once in a while I take a long walk after school. So I think
I’m more into walking on my own.
• 3. Would you say that your city is a good place for walking?
• Nowadays they don’t walk as much as they used to in the past. Private
transportation is becoming more affordable and diverse in terms of
price, design and quality. You may easily catch sign of the middle-aged
and the elderly walking in the park or on the street, and they all look like
they are enjoying themselves.
• 5. Do you think walking is important?
Not one’s cup of tea (idiom): not what one likes or is interested in
Well, I am more a cosmetics girl than clothing and accessories, hence, there
are not many watches and jewelries in my possession. However, I have
nothing against wearing a beautiful piece of art on my wrist and do own a few
exclusive timepieces which suit perfectly with my clothing on some special
occasions, giving me a sense of identity and uniqueness.
Just like any other accessories, the more luxurious a timepiece looks, the
higher social status the owner may hold. Watches are widely used by either
gender and one of the visual indicators presenting how professional, smart
and attractive a person is. Therefore, if one wants to be acknowledged and
taken seriously, he/she will prefer a high-end watch rather than a collection of
low-end ones.

Vocabulary and Useful Expression:
Acknowledge (n): to accept that somebody/something has a particular
authority or status
Indicator (n): a sign that shows you what something is like or how a
situation is changing
It's really freezing (sunny, cool, breezy, chilly, warm, humid, hot) today. If I
didn’t have to take the IELTS exams, I would prefer to stay at home. Actually I
prefer cloudy days, because then it's neither too hot nor too cold. And what's
more important to me is that this weather is perfect for photography as the
light is so soft. So at this time of day, I like to go out with my camera to take
photos.
In my hometown the weather is quite pleasant, neither too hot nor too cold
most of the time. Even in winter, the temperature is still quite mild. But the
summer is often hot and humid.
The bad thing about the weather in my hometown is that it doesn't snow as
heavily as does up north like in Beijing for example. It does snow, but usually
we just get a little bit. Every time I see children having a snowball flight or
making a snowman on TV, I really envy them.
I believe though China is a vast country, there are four distinct seasons in
most places. But unfortunately in recent years, many places are becoming
boiling hot in the summer. I guess the changes are primarily due to the
greenhouse effect. So in this extreme weather, I will really prefer to work at
home, and the air-conditioning is working all day long, and at night, I even
sleep on the floor to be cooler.
humid (adj): (of air and weather conditions) containing extremely small drops
of water in the air
1. What do you do with your friends on weekends?
We’ll hang out for a chit-chat and go to eat some scrumptious food. After that,
we’ll huddle together to play cards. It’s a precious time for us when we can
momentarily get away from the hectic whirlwind of daily activities.
Chit chat (noun): friendly conversation about things that are not very
important
Get to know (phrase): to spend time with someone or something so that you
gradually learn more about him, her, or it
Take a trip down memory lane (idiom): to reminisce over memories of past
events, especially happy ones.
To be through (phrase): To have finished something
Vivid dream (phrase): any dream or nightmare which one remembers after
awakening
look into (phrasal verb): to examine the facts about a problem or situation
pyjama party (n): a social occasion when a group of friends, usually children
or young people, stay for the night at one person’s house
1. What do you do in your spare time?
Because I’d prefer staying at home so I spend my spare time for my hobbies.
Usually I’ll start by turning on some music. If I have plenty of time, I’ll get
straight to dancing or drawing. Otherwise, if it’s just a quick break, social
network would definitely a good choice.
Since my parents go to work for a whole day, I and my younger brother has
classes everyday, so we only meet to have dinner in the evening. Although
we’re busy with our own schedule, we try to maintain the family-dinner as
regularly as possible, so having dinner with my family has apparently become
a habit.
I don’t have any actual plan for weekends to be honest. If I’m free and the
weather is nice, probably I’d have a drink and chit chat with my friends, since
we don’t see each other often during weekdays. Otherwise I’ll just stay home,
continue with my work and enjoy myself.
7. Do you feel that weekends now are more important to you than when
you were a child?
carpentry (n): the skill or work of making and repairing wooden objects
relief (n): a feeling of happiness that something unpleasant has not happened
or has ended
1. Are young people in China today more mature than in the past?
I don’t think so. If anything, they are more immature than in the past. In the
past, life was harder here in China, and young people had to grow up fast and
had to take on responsibility. Now with the country getting richer and only one
child per household, they are actually pretty spoiled, and their parents do a lot
of things for them.
They can learn a lot if they want to. They can learn from the vast amount of
experience that older people have. They can learn what old people did under
circumstances similar to what young people go through. They can learn how
to raise a family and how to have a lasting relationship. Also, they can leant
how to deal with difficult situations.
3. Do you think young people can adapt to changes easier than old
people?
Not necessarily. I have seen some young people that didn’t know how to deal
with changes at all, and then I have seen some older people who take
changes without breaking a sweat. Of course I do know, like the old saying
goes about teaching an old dog new tricks, that it is sometimes harder for an
older person to change, but they can do if I think that a lot of young people
here in China have a hard time with changes because they have seen such
few changes and like the way things are now.
