EME 2513 POWER PLANTS

Course Aims
To give the students an understanding of the principles of power production in a variety
of power generation set-ups. To give the students an understanding of the design and
construction of various power plants; the process, technology and challenges of power
generation; and the merits & demerits and economics associated with the different types
of power plants.
Expected Outcomes
By the end of this unit, the students should be able to:
1. Understand the process of generating power
2. Classify the various types of power plants according to the process/energy-source
applied
3. Identify the fundamental components of a power-generation plant
4. Calculate the requirements of a particular power plant from a given power
demand
5. Perform an energy-balance of a given power plant
Course Content
Steam power plant, cycles and efficiencies: boilers, steam turbines, condensers, heat
exchangers. Antipollution systems and safety. Internal combustion engines; construction
and efficiencies; gas turbine, diesel engine, co-generation, gas and steam combined
power plant. Natural energy power plant: construction and operation; geothermal, solar,
windmill, water turbine. Nuclear power plant: Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR); Boiling
Water Reactor (BWR), reactor vessel, steam generator. Recycling of used nuclear fuel.
