COURSE ASSESSMENT DETAILS


SBLE 2113 ENGLISH PROFICIENCY II

1. Listening Test – 20%


This test requires students to listen to authentic recordings in order to identify the main ideas
and specific information for 40 questions. This will be conducted in class and will take about
30-40 minutes for the test. Students will listen to audio recordings from authentic materials
and answer the questions related.

2. Reading comprehension quiz – 15%


This quiz will test on students’ reading comprehension abilities where they are required to
transfer information for 35 questions. Students are required to complete the task on given
text. One hour will be allocated for this quiz and conducted in class.

3. Writing Test – 10% (Individual)


a) Writing Test 1 (Advice column) – 5%
Students will be given a problem which they need to evaluate and come with appropriate
suggestions. They need to write their advice within 350 words.
b) Writing Test 2 (Formal email) – 5%
Students need to write a formal email based on prompts given. They need to write their
essay within 350 words.

4. Group Discussion – 20% (Group work)


This task will be done in groups of 4-5 members. On the day of presentation, topics will be
given at the beginning of the session. Each group will be given a situation, in which the
group members need to give their responses and make a consensus. The presentation will
take about 30-35 minutes. 2 minutes will be allocated for preparation time.

5. Writing & presentation (Poster) – 25% (Group work)


a) Poster – 10%

Based on the themes, a group of students (4 or 5 members) will have to create a poster
based on the topic chosen. Students are free to create their own template for the poster
and marks will be given based on content, originality and etc. They have to submit the
poster (coloured copy) before mid-semester break starts.

b) Presentation – 15%

Students are required to present their poster to the class. Time allocated for the
presentation is 20 minutes. Students will be assessed based on contribution during the
presentation.

6. Pair presentation – 10% (ONLINE)


A pair of students will be required to prepare a presentation (10-15 minutes) on any theme
chosen from the textbook. They have to produce detailed description of events and own
experiences. This will be videotaped, uploaded to YouTube and links posted on UUM Online
Learning. Instructors may advise them to start doing this task as early as possible (during
mid-semester break).
