volcanoes, earthquake epicenters, and mountain ranges.
The learners shall be able to: a) demonstrate ways to ensure disaster preparedness
B. Performance during earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions; and
Standards b) suggest ways by which he/she can contribute to government efforts in reducing
damage due to earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions.
 Describe the possible causes of plate movement. (S10ES –Ia-j-36.5)
C. Learning
Competencies & 1. Explain what causes the tectonic plates to move.

Short Review
Questions:
1. Elicit  What is magnetic reversal? PPT Slide
 What is the evidence that the scientists discovered
which proves the magnetic reversal?
The teacher will show short video and picture to the students
2. Engage video, PPT Slides
and let them answer the questions about them.
Laboratory Activity
Procedure:
1. The class will be divided into three groups according
to their interest and ability.
2. Using their LM and prepared laboratory materials, let
them perform Activity 7 in the LM entitled “Push me
up and aside.
3. Before doing the activity, students will be instructed
about the procedure of the activity and informed on
the safety measures to be followed.
4. In doing the activity, each group will be given dropper, food color,
different task to do to make the conduct of the activity 1000 mL beaker, 700
fast and due to the limited laboratory materials mL water, 3-5 small /
3. Explore available. light wood blocks,
Group 1 - Will perform the laboratory alcohol burner & tripod,
activity and write manila paper, pentel
observation about it pen, tape, PPT Slides
Group 2 - Observers and will illustrate what
they observed during the conduct
of the experiment
Group 3 - Observers and will answer the
guide questions of the activity.
5. Fifteen (15) minutes will be given to the students to
finish the activity.
6. As they finished the activity, group
reporting/presentation of output/result will be
conducted.
7. Group output and performance will be rated using a
prepared rubric by the teacher.
1. Activity Processing
Guide Questions:
1. How does the food coloring react?
2. What do you call this behavior?
3. Enumerate the factors that cause the
formation of a current.
4. What happens to the blocks? What does this
resemble?
2. Post-Activity Discussion
4. Explain LM, PPT Presentation
Guide Questions:
1. What causes the tectonic plates(continents) to
move?
2. How convection currents cause the tectonic
plates to move?
3. What are the factors that cause tectonic plates
to move?
4. What is the importance of the creation of
convection current underneath the earth?
Video-clip Viewing
 Let the students watch a video-clip that presents
convection current to make them visualize its process
5. Elaborate and fully understand it. video clip
 After watching, let them give the events or processes
that occurs in the process of convection current in the
mantle?
Short Quiz: Multiple Choice
1. The lithospheric plates are believed to be moving slowly.
What is the driving force that facilitates this movement?
a. gravitational force of the moon
b. magnetic force at the poles
c. convection current in the mantle
d. the force of the atmosphere
2. Which of the following diagrams best illustrates the
convection occurring in the mantle?

3. Which of the following are the factors that cause

tectonic plates to move?
6. Evaluate I. changes in the density of the magma PPT slides, paper
II. amount of heat from the core
III. pressure in the mantle
IV. amount of magma
a. I & II c. III & IV
b. II & III d. all of the above

convection current in the mantle?
a. continental drift theory
b. seafloor spreading theory
c. plate tectonic theory
d. all of the above
5. Which of the following shows the importance of the
creation of convection current underneath the earth?
a. It drives the rock cycle.
b. It facilitates the creation of the different geologic
features like mountain ranges.
c. It helps transfer heat from Earth's core to the
mantle and eventually to the crust.
d. All of the above.
Assignment:
 Tectonic activities at the surface just like volcanic
eruptions and earthquakes are inevitable. Since you
can’t prevent these tectonic activities from
happening, we have to be prepared and make an
7. Extend LM
action to mitigate its effects. With that, make an
informative material about ways to mitigate the
effects of tectonic activities-related disasters. Refer
on page 73 of the module for the details and
guidelines on how to do it.
