I. OBJECTIVE
EN9G-IVd-23. Express obligation.
II. SUBJECT MATTER
Topic: Modal Verbs of Obligation
Materials: projector, power point presentation, worksheet, cartolina strips, learner’s guide

III. PROCEDURE
A. Pre- Activity
1. Motivation
 Who among you are doing some household chores, paper works and personal stuff
after school or during night time?
 What are the things you do at home? (The answers of students will be recorded on
a chart.)
 Which among these things are you oblige to do at home?
 What about the things you may do or may not do?
 Raise hands to their preferred answers and count the results.

 Your answers are the most common responsibilities that you have to do at home.
2. Presentation of Lesson
 How would you express responsibilities if you are oblige to do these things? What
if you are only advised to do it?
 Today, we are going to learn on how to express obligation.
B. Lesson Proper
1. ACTIVITY
 Group the students into three and form a small circle.
 Show the picture of a young man named Jose and describe him.

This is Jose. He belongs to the poorest family in town. And he decided to already
quit studying because of poverty. Supposed Jose is your classmate, what advice(s)
will you give?
 Ask again the guide question to the students, “What advice(s) will you give him?”
 Inside the envelope are cartolina strips where they will write their pieces of advice
to Jose within 2 minutes.
 All groups will post their strips of cartolina around the picture of Jose.
2. ANALYSIS
The teacher will ask the following:
 Do you think Jose needs to do these things? Why?
 What common words were used by all groups in their respective answers?
 Are you familiar with these words? How are they called?
 Based on your answers, how do you define modals?
 Let’s see if you’re definition of modals is correct based on this presentation.
3. ABSTRACTION
 Let the students read the definition of Modals.
 Can you identify the modals of obligation? What do you think are these?
 Why are they called Modals of Obligation?
 Examine these sentences:
Should
You should stop smoking cigarettes as early as possible before damaging your
lungs.
He should comply with the requirements to pass his course.
Must
I must tell the truth.
Maria must give her friend the benefit of the doubt.
 Based on the given examples, when do we use “should”?
 When do we use “must”?
4. APPLICATION
 This time, the teacher will check whether they fully understand the lesson.
“FAKE NEWS”
“Lot of things you read online especially in your social media feeds may appear
to be true, often not. Fake news is news, stories or hoaxes created to deliberately
misinform or deceive readers. Usually, these stories are created to influence
people’s views, push political agenda or cause confusion. To truly solve the issue
of “fake news’ we must blend technological assistance with teaching our netizens
to be literate.”

 With the same group, students will do the following activity.
Group 1
 Compose a POEM about stopping fake news using SHOULD and MUST.
Group 2
 Write a QUOTATION about spreading a fake news using SHOULD and
MUST.
Group 3
 Make a short JINGLE about the impact/ effect of the fake news in our
society using SHOULD and MUST.
 Show to them the rubrics of each activity.
 After the group performance, ask them again these questions:
When do we use SHOULD? MUST?
IV. EVALUATION
With the spread of Novel Corona Virus (nCoV), what must/should your advice to a
patient with severe cough?
Instructions:
1. Act as a doctor and recommend or advice your patient.
2. Write three (3) recommendations using the modal MUST and another three (3)
recommendations using SHOULD.
3. Write your answer on the worksheet.
