Who gets to decide whether a piece of work is an art?

Is it the artist or the critic?

Nowadays it is a dilemma for everyone on deciding whether a piece of work is to be

considered as an art. Sometimes it is the artist, because we all knew that art is an expression of
the emotion and feelings of the artist. On the other hand, it is the audience who decides because
art will then be subjected to the judgement of the public and they would be the ones to interpret it
according to the extent of their knowledge and intellectual capacity.
I would like to point out two points but these are only based on my foreknowledge, and
with a little help of some internet sources. First, to decide whether an art is objective or
subjective, they must be balanced. If we ought to comprehend the lay people’s perception of art,
there is a wide variety of differences when it comes to beauty. For some, they consider a piece as
an art but for other people who have different cultural backgrounds and ideas they don’t.
Therefore, art is both objective and subjective, because that is how humans work: we judge
something on a physical basis then we put our interpretation based on our background of the
subject. Second point, on the question on who to decide whether a piece of work is an art or not:
is it the artist or the critic? Again, the answer is both. Art is a tool of communication. An art is
generally a visual communication. It is the artist who tries to express an idea through his work of
art, on the other hand it is the critic who evaluates if that idea is really expressed or not.

“I think you can rely on the artist's representation; he or she would have no reason to lie.
A viewer with a combination of sensitivity and knowledge will perceive that something is art and
is good. Time also helps.” ARTHUR DANTO
