3. Describe specific characteristic(s) why a particular steel alloys has been used for a specific
purpose.
a) Carbon steels- As the skin of some supersonic jets because of its resistance to heat. The
friction in the air causes the exterior of the aircraft to heat up.
b) Nickel steels- Nickel improves hardness, tensile strength and elastic limit of steel for use
in the aircraft parts for example bolts, terminals, clevises and pins.
c) Nickel-Chromium steels- It has exceedingly hard-wear resisting surface and a hard core,
so is generally used in engine construction for gear pins, piston pins, cam rings, push rod
ends, rollers.
d) Molybdenum steels- Practically used in all parts made of sheets and tubing.
e) Chrome-Vanadium steels- Has good fatigue and machining properties and is used in
propeller cones and snap rings.
f) Nitriding steels- Used in brushings and gears requiring great surface hardness and wear
resistance.
g) Austenitic Manganese steels- Tail skids and arresting-hook toes due to high wear
resistance.
h) Hy-Tuf- Used in Landing gear components due to high tensile strength.
