MUSIC
GAMELAN
 indigenous orchestra type of the Java and Bali in Indonesia
 consists of several gongs and various sets of tuned metal instruments that are struck with mallets

JAVANESE GAMELAN
 OFTEN PERFORMED DURING SACRED RITUALS AND CEREMONIES.
 BEST SUITED FOR TEMPLES AND PALACES BECAUSE OF ITS GENTLE AND REFINED NATURE.

BALINESE GAMELAN
 A dynamic, loud rhythmic.
 Wood hammers are unpadded and create bright and percussive tones.
SLENDRO
 System of tuning where an each note is distanced 1.25 tones approximately

PELOG
 Tuning system that divides an octave into seven unequal intervals

TRIPARTITE
 Shared by or involving three parties

THAILAND’S PIPHAT

PIPHAT
 Derived from two words: PI which means double-reed instrument in the ensemble and PHAT which means to
play music.
 Mainly composed of striking instruments, wind instruments and time marking instruments
 Usually performed in royal ceremonies, public festivities and accompaniment for KHON (mask dance drama),
NANG YAI ( grand shadow puppet spectacle), LAKHON ( dance drama), HUN KRABOK (bamboo puppet theater)
and LI-KE (folk dance drama)
 Also performed in death rituals.

TYPES OF PIPHAT
1. PIPHAT MAI KHAENG
 prototype from which all other types are based on.
 Formerly called Phin Phat but renamed by Prince Naritsara Nuwattiwong
 This means hard wooden stick referring to the unpadded sticks used to play the Ranat Ek (thai
xylophone)
 Performs in royal ceremonies and in commoners rites.
2. PIPHAT SEPHA
 Adds the Luk Poeng or the Song Na to the Piphat Khrueang Ha *five instrument ensemble)
 The drums serves as the time marker and drives the rhythmic pattern while the ensemble accompanies
the Sepha singing in the Lakhon Sepha performance.
3. PIPHAT MAI NUAM
 In this ensemble, the Khlui Phiang O (medium size fipple flute) and the Khlui Lib (small size fipple flute
are replaced by Pi Nai (soprano oboe) and Pi Nok (sopranino oboe).
 Padded mallets are also used to play the Ranat Ek
 This ensemble accompanies the Khon and Lakhon performances.
 Introduced by Chao Phraya Thewetwongwiwat during hthe reign of King Rama V.
4. PIPHAT DUEK DAM BAN
 Named after the hall where the new hybrid of Lakhon Nai and western Opera is performed
 Accompaniment for the new form invented by Chao Phraya Thewetwongwiwat
 The ensemble was created by Prince Naritsara Nuwattiwong in 1898
5. PIPHAT NANG HONG
 Combination of Piphat and Bua Loi ensembles
 Features the Pi Chawa and two Klong Malayu from Bua Loi ensemble
6. PIPHAT MON
 Performed at the festivals and ceremonies of the Mon Thai people

ARTS
BATIK
 Part of the ancient tradition and culture of Javanese people of Indonesia
 The patterns are more like symbols that express their cultural indentities
 Comes from the Javanese word TIK means to dot,
 Also refers to the technique of decorating cloth called wax resist dyeing

THAI SILK
 Made from cocoons of silk worms
 Hand woven and each design is unique
 It gives the illusion of changing its colors as you hold the fabric

CAMBODIAN SILK
1. IKAT OR IKKAT TECHNIQUE
- Weavers tie and dye the weft portion of the yarn in order to create a pattern
2. UNEVEN TWILL TECHNIQUE
- Three threads are woven to produce single or two color fabrics. The finished fabric shows the color of one
thread on one side

LAOS WOVEN SINH


- A traditional skirt worn by women.
- Each skirt is unique and tells a tale woven into its every strand
