SECTION 2
2.1 Scope
The lightning protection system for the buildings shall comply with
recommendations of the British standard Code of Practice for the Protection of
Structures against Lighting, BS 6651:1992.
The air termination shall consist of roof conductors run along the ridges of pitched
roofs and on the parapet walls or as shown in the drawings. Air termination shall
be on a closed loop roof conductors and spaced at or within 0.6m of roof edges,
corners of chimneys and other roof projections, and at intervals 6m along main
ridges of around the perimeter of flat roofs. The type of material used shall be
copper tape and the minimum size shall be 25 mm x 3.0 mm or as stated in
drawings.
Down conductors shall be of the same size and type of materials as used for the air
termination network. Down conductors shall be securely clamped to the roof
conductors and to the earth electrodes at ground level.
Down conductors shall run on the outside of the building and shall be secured at
2m intervals using specially made bar and saddles. Down conductors shall be as
direct and vertical as possible. All bends must be made with as large a bending
radius as possible.
A test joint shall be provided at 0.5m above ground level or as shown in the
drawing at every down conductors. All down conductors shall be protected by 50
mm dia HDPE Pipe Sleeve from 1.8m (7 feet) downward to ground.

2.5 Bonding
All metallic parts of the building within 3m of the lighting protection network shall
be bonded to the lightning protection network. Where dissimilar metals are
bonded together steps shall be taken to avoid electrolytic action. The cost of all
necessary bondings deemed to be included in the tender price.
