BRANCHING EXAM AS BASIS FOR INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY COURSE

ELECTIVE SELECTION FOR THE BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN INFORMATION

TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM

Abstract

Introduction

Technology based academic degrees such as the Bachelor of Science in Information Technology
is fast evolving everyday. Curriculum offerings in academic institutions are fast becoming obsolete
even before the students finish the degree. Tweaking the curricular offerings in the BSIT program
can serve as an offset to the fast-changing landscape of the Information Technology Education. The
current BSIT curriculum of 2018 in the Institute of Computing Studies include six (6) IT elective
courses. These IT electives are offered during the 1st and 2nd semesters of the third year level.
These courses were included to bridge the deficiencies of the professional courses being offered
in the program. The IT Electives allow the students to have a specialized field eventhough the
BSIT 2018 curriculum was designed as as generalized program. The IT electives to choose from
ranges from IT Networking, Web Development, and Mobile Development. Identifying the right
IT electives for the students can be challenging because the department needs to identify the
strengths of the students in their professional courses. A comprehensive approach will be needed
to assess the base knowledge of the students in the BSIT program.
