Why Differential Pressure Gauges ?

• The four pillars of instrumentation: pressure, temperature,

level and flow
• Monitor the condition and movement of liquids and gases
• Differential pressure gauges are considered ‘specialty’
gauges as they can be utilized for pressure, level and flow
measurement
• Implementing differential gauges, greatly reduces
operator errors, improves process efficiency, protects
expensive equipment and reduces maintenance
downtime
Filter Monitoring With
Differential Pressure Gauges

• The most popular application for differential pressure gauge is

filtration
• When a filter becomes clogged, efficiency and pressure drop
• A differential pressure gauge is used to detect a clogged filter
• How does it work?
‒ As the filter collects foreign particles, the pressure before
the filter builds up. The more the filter gets clogged, the
more the differential pressure increases
‒ Once the differential pressure reaches a specific value, the
instrument technician knows the filter requires changing
Traditional Filter Monitoring With
Two (2) Pressure Gauges

• One pressure gauge before filter

• Another pressure gauge after the filter

• The user will need to continuously monitor both

instruments and subtract the high-side from the low

• This approach is prone to human & instrument errors

Differential Pressure Gauges
Are The Solution

• One differential pressure gauge, installed using the

same taps, eliminates the previous problems

• The rate of error will drop

• An instant measure of the change in pressure

• No need for any math

• Preventative maintenance at a glance

Typical Air Filter Installation

High Low
Flow Monitoring With
Differential Pressure Gauges

• Flow is another common application

• Install an orifice plate and measure the pressure drop

• Finding the difference in pressure before and after the

orifice

• A differential pressure gauge solution represents a high

accuracy solution at a low cost
Flow Monitoring With
Differential Pressure Gauges
Liquid Level Monitoring With
Differential Pressure Gauges

• Differential pressure gauges also measure liquid level

• In open tanks and in a closed tanks

• The resulting measurement is the height of the liquid

within the tank

• This is a relatively inexpensive solution

DP Gauges Are Equipped To Handle Many
Commercial & Industrial Applications

• Air Handling Units

• Dust Collection Equipment
• Fume Hoods & Air Dryers
• Clean Rooms
• Tanks & Containment
Chambers
• General Filtration Equipment
Different Types Of Mechanical
Differential Pressure Sensors

• The following mechanical pressure

sensing elements are available
‒ Bourdon tube
‒ Diaphragm type and
‒ Piston
• Bourdon tube
‒ Two separate c-tubes
• Diaphragm type
‒ Separated by a diaphragm element
• Piston
‒ Magnetized calibrated piston
PDT Series Differential Gauge

• PDT Series has a single pointer

• The dial is available with either a
conventional or balanced scale
‒ The conventional scale measures the
total pressure in the system
‒ The balanced scale has a ‘0’ at the
12 o’clock position
• The PDT is available in ranges from 15 to
600 psi and is used in general purpose,
medium to high pressure applications, for
static pressure up to 900 psi
PDT Series Internals

• Single gauge with pointer for

measuring two independent but
related pressures
• Shows the difference between the
two pressures
• Limited to line or static pressure no
more than 1.5 x desired dial range
e.g. 0/200 psi dial scale has a
maximum operating pressure of
0/300 psi
PFD WinAIR
Differential Series Gauge

• PFD Series is a non-traditional

differential gauge
‒ Extremely low pressure
‒ Resistance free
• Used to measure air and non-
combustible gases
• Unlike the PDT, the WinAIR differential
gauge uses a rubber diaphragm and
magnetic movement
• The gauge measures “H2O, mmH2O,
kPa and many more pressure scales
PFD Series, WinAIR
For Very Low Pressure Differential Applications

• Installed in applications to detect

positive, vacuum or differential
pressure
• Large, clear 4” dial and contoured
lens for easy reading
• Broad temperature range for
flexible installations
• Easy access re-zero screw
• Standard installation and
mounting accessories offered at
no extra cost
PPD Series Piston Gauge

• For broader static pressure

requirements
• Differential pressure is sensed by the
movement of a floating piston magnet
against a calibrated spring
• The gauge pointer follows the
movement of the piston magnet
• Full over-range protection in either
direction
PPD Series Internals

• 2.5”, 3.5”, 4.5” & 6” dial sizes

• Differential pressure ranges from 0/5 to 0/110 psid
• Static pressures of 3K or 6K psig
• Aluminum and Stainless Steel materials
