SCENE 1

It was just before the Spaniards’ settlement in the Philippines. In the village of
Batangan, now Batangas, includes Mindoro and the southwestern slopes of Laguna to
Kamarines.
Datu Batumbakal is known as the ruling head of the tribe and other places that
they conquered. They are also rich and powerful.
(Datu Batumbakal enters, sits on his chair)
Datu Batumbakal: I am, indeed, a king because I know how to rule myself. My crown
is called content that seldom kings enjoy. (leaves)
Her only daughter, Mutya Marin, was known in the region for being beautiful,
modest and almost all of the good qualities was on her. Her hair was a naturally wavy
hair and that suits her. Her eyes were as deep as the ocean, as dreamy as the starry
night, as pretty as the lotus petals, as mesmerizing as the sunrise, and as serene as the
morning dew. Her nose is pointed, slightly turned up. She also has a mole on her nape.
Her body is slim and her height is moderate.
(Mutya Marin enters)
Mutya Marin has many admirers and this includes Datu Bagal who is rich in
resources. His kingdom is known as Mindoro (Mina de Oro).
(Datu Bagal also enters)
Datu Bagal: I don't think I knew the magic of love before I met you, Mutya Marin. I
am rich and I can buy anything for you.
Mutya Marin: If you try to buy love, you will go bankrupt trying to possess it. (smiles)
(leaves)
Not only Datu Bagal of Mindoro but also Datu Sagwil of Laguna.
(Datu Sagwil and Mutya Marin enters)
Datu Sagwil: (give Mutya Marin 11 roses) If you stood in front of a mirror holding 11
roses, you will see 12 of the most beautiful things in this world. (leaves)
Mutya Marin: Roses defines beauty. Roses defines love. Sorry, but I’m already inlove
with someone else.
Datu Kawili of Laguna also admires her beauty.
(Datu Kawili and Mutya Marin enters)

Datu Kawili: I was so enchanted by your beauty. If beauty were time, you'd be
eternity. I swear I couldn’t love you more than I do right now, and yet I know I will
tomorrow.

Mutya Marin: I’m sorry, but love is beyond looks. (leaves)

But who Marin likes is a poor poet, Garduque. He’s from Taal and a sailor of
Lake Bunbon.

SCENE 2
One day, It was announced that there would be a contest at the palace to give
tribute for their gods and goddesses.
(Announcer enters)
Announcer: There would be a contest. Everyone can freely join. This contest was
made to give tribute to our gods and goddesses. (leaves)
The long-awaited game has arrived. The contestant of all kinds of sports
gathered.
(Announcer enters)
Announcer: The first contest is archery. Whoever shoot the arrows at a target for
accuracy from a set distance will be the winner.
The contestants of this round unleashes their arrows but the one who received
the reward was the famous Mangyan, Balindada.
Announcer: The second contest is to throw stones across the river. Whoever had the
farthest stone will be the winner.
 The contestant go to their respective places. The winner of this round is an
Igorot, who is the representative of the mountaineous province.
Announcer: The next contest is horse racing. The person who can defeat Mutya Marin
will marry her.
(Mutya Marin and the Princes enters)
All of the princes fails. At the end, Mutya Marin was presented as the queen of
the tournament and was crowned with the crown of honor.
(Garduque enters and put the crown on Mutya Marin’s head)
The contest ended and the guest left.

SCENE 3
Datu Bagal, Sagwil, and Kawili are good friends with Marin’s father, both
outside and inside, the offer love to the young lady. On the other hand, the young poet
has recently been forbidden by Datu Batumbakal from meeting his daughter.
Datu Batumbakal: (angry) Why are you entering my kingdom without my
permission?
Garduque: Pardon me, but I am just obeying your daughter’s orders.
Datu Batumbakal: From now on, I don’t want to see your face here.
Garduque: I can’t disobey Mutya Marin. Everytime I enter this kingdom, I am reading
the poems that make her happy.
Datu Batumbakal: Stop, you bastard.
(Garduque left with sadness on his face)
Marin could not stand her father’s gibe for her beloved. So Marin once
defended the young man.
(Marin enters)
Marin: My father, the king! Don’t look down on my lover! He’s the only one who is
there for me!
Datu Batumbakal: (cuts Marin’s words) You are blinded. Let’s postpone this case and
we’ll talk about this on some other day.
(Marin didn’t utter another word)

SCENE 4
(Marin is walking near a strait)
A long time passed and the poet never entered the palace. Created by the
unmistakable power of love, Mutya Marin deliberately wanders into the meadow
hoping to see the poet. She reached the Hog Strait where fierce crocodile lives.
(When Marin was about to be attacked by the crocodile, the poet arrives and
saves her)
Mutya Marin: Thanks, dear!
Garduque: Why did you dare to go around the forest? Didn’t you know you might be
the next victim of the mounds? If that happens, you will never be able to return to the
palace.
Mutya Marin: (displeasured) I don’t know! I am always bothered if I don’t see you. It’
been a long time since the last time I saw you. Am I that easy to forget?
Garduque: Datu Batumbakal had warned me.
Mutya Marin: If you are really honest with me, if your love is real, you will do
everything you can, even if you will meet your own death.
Garduque: Marin, do you really love me? I am a poor person. Why do you love me?
Datu bagal is rich, Datu Sagwil is powerful. Same goes to Datu Kawili. Then why
me?
Marin: You hurt my heart.
Garduque: Follow your dear father. Datu Batumbakal don’t like me for you. What
will a singer like me benefits you? Can my poems feed you?
Marin: Food is not the only thing that keeps the human alive.
Garduque: I am truly grateful, Marin. Are you aware of this fact that Datu Batumbakal
banned me from seeing you?
Marin: Yes
Garduque: Did you know that this actions can be the reason for beheading me?
Marin: I know. I have met you so that we may once again made our promises that
only death can do us apart.
Garduque: I promise. I love you ‘till death.
Marin: Let’s love each other as long as there is a world. Meet me in the place where w
used to meet at evening. I have something to confess.
Garduque: Go away before your father find you,
(Garduque was with her until they reached the neighborhood)
SCENE 5
(Datu Batumbakal called Marin)
Datu Batumbakal: Why are you secretly seeing your poor lover? This is against my
rules e kingdom. and customs of the kingdom. The noble is for the noble. The slave is
for the slave. Tomorrow, I will behead that lover of yours.
(Marin could be seen in the Garden. Garduque searched for Marin.)
(saw marin in front of his eyes)

Marin: My love, tomorrow you'll be beheaded

Garduque: I'm ready. Did you agree to it yet?

Marin: No way. Let's escape, I decided to run away with you. I ask some slaves for
help. They are waiting for us in the estuary.

Garduque: Where are we going?

Marin: Let's run away. We are going south. We will escape this father who intervene
in his child's love.
Marin run away with her lover. They sailed the ocean overnight.
SCENE 6
The morning came and when Datu Batumbakal was about to eat breakfast, he noticed
that Marin was gone.

Datu Batumbakal: (angry) Where is Marin?

Someone: Your Highness, she fled with Garduque.

Datu Batumbakal: (still angry) Run after her for she broke my rules and the village's
tradition.

Datu Batumbakal reported what happened to Marin's three admirers.

Datu Sagwil: So that is what happened? Of course, I will immediately take action.

Datu Kawili: It is me who will marry Mutya Marin.

(the group that is ordered to run after Marin had passed Mindoro)

Datu Bagal: what happened?

Someone: Mutya Marin run away with her lover!

Batu Bagal: (shocked) WHAT?! Then I will go with you, too.

 SCENE 7
What can a little boat can do? No doubt they had already been caught. It was only five
hours after Datu Batumbakal had eaten breakfast when a giant vehicle chasing the
fleeing lover was caught.

Marin: (tied the rope on her hand) The walls are there for a reason. The walls are not
there to keep us out. The walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we
want something. Because the walls are there to stop the people who don’t want it
badly enough. They’re there to stop the other people. They are that 'wall'.

Garduque: (tied the rope on his hand)

No boundary or barrier surrounds the heart of a person that truly loves you.

(they tied the rope on a stone)

(Marin and Duque jumped on the ocean)

Garduque: Farewell, Batumbakal

Marin: Farewell, Father.

The lover, Marin and Duque, was never seen again.

The next morning, what a surprise to those who sought the lover to find a large island
at the site where Marin and Duque jumped.

The island has since been named MARINDUQUE, from Marin and Duque.

Datu Batumbakal repented but it was too late. From being cruel, he changed. He
became affectionate to his kingdo. He changed the laws in place in the village. Slaves
and nobles became equal.

Marinduque is now an island with beautiful and poetic views. The island borrow the
beauty of Marin and poetry from the great singer.
