“IEnvest: Understanding the Contemporary Advances in Commerce”

On the 2nd day of December 2018, the 3rd annual BSIES Provincial Congress was
held at the Lyceum of the Philippines University – Laguna. This year’s theme was
“IEnvest: Understanding the Contemporary Advances in Commerce” and it featured three
respectable speakers namely, Engr. Felix C. Veroya, Prof. Reginald Neil Recario, and Engr.
Marincho B. Monsanto Jr.

Engr. Veroya talked about Design Sprint and according to his talk, Design Sprint is
a 5 phase ideation process that is human-centered and iterative in nature aiming to
answer critical business questions. He also said that this may be helpful in coming up
with a topic for students’ Feasibility Studies. Prof. Recario’s topic was somewhat related
to Engr. Veroya’s topic I at some point. His talk focused on data analytics which is more
commonly used by Computer Science major like him but in some way could be used by
Industrial Engineers and students. Lastly, Engr. Monsanto tackled Operations Research
and how this is important in our field of study. He said that this will be very useful when
us students graduate and enter the industry. These three topics could be of good while
still studying and when students graduate and become professionals.

The Congress did not only feature talks but also a quiz bee as well as the Annual
Mr. and Ms. BSIES. Several schools competed for both of the competitions that showcased
the knowledge, wit, and beauty of Industrial Engineering students within the Province.
Polytechnic University took home the championship for the quiz bee while BSU Alangilan
and De La Salle Lipa won the pageant as Mr. and Ms. BSIES, respectively. Our
representatives also fought hard and well in the competition and they may not have taken
home the prize but put up a very good fight.

This year’s BSIES Provincial Congress may be the last one for us graduating
students but we will surely bring with us all the learnings and experiences we have had
and use it when we go out into the real world.
