CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

As our society improves, the issue of academic pressure grows. Most of the

high school students nowadays are stressed in their studies. In the present time,

education becomes stressful but according to Socrates, education is not the filling

of a vessel but the kindling of a flame. If a student doesn’t overcome his/her

academic problems and pressure, it may lead to academic stress. Every person has

different mind. Even if it is the same, some take it easy and some stress it out. It is

up to the students on how he/she will handle the situation. If the student has a strong

mind, he/she may be able to overcome the pressure and stress. The student’s

surrounding can also affect the way he/she will respond to the given situation.

Academic pressure is one of the biggest problems of high school students.

These pressures usually come from peer and parental expectation. The students are

also afraid of being a failure and disgrace. They are afraid that they will not meet

what others want so they are using most of their time and energy to meet academic

goals. The students will aim to be good and will be anxious about going wrong. If

something will not go as they wanted, they will work harder and harder. This build

academic pressure.

Students can have different causes to have academic pressure. It can be from

siblings, if their siblings are smarter than them, they will be compared for a long

period of time. It is same with their friends or the children of their parents’ friends,

they will be compared on some points. Usually, it is from their parents, they tend
to compare their children. Most of the time, their words discourage the students and

it is very hard to handle the pressure because at the same time, you will also fight

the pain it gives. Also, when they think about the future, they will be pressured to

have a good and successful life.

Academic pressure may occur because of discontentment with what the

student’s grades and capabilities. Grades don’t measure the intelligence of a student

but still, there are parents who want their child to excel in their studies. As a result,

some students didn’t handle that. According to Lou Holtz, it’s not the load that

breaks you down, it’s the way you carry it.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Academic performance of a student plays a crucial role in deciding the next

stage of their education, which in turn shapes their career. An excess of academic

pressure during high school stage can result in adverse effects that are far-reaching

and prolonged.

According to Anoushka Thakkar (2018), Excessive levels of academic

pressure can result in an increased prevalence of psychological and physical

problems like depression, anxiety, nervousness and stress related disorders, which

in turn can affect their academic results. Problems associated with academic

pressures such as difficulty in concentrating, low performance, increased

absenteeism, alcoholism, drug abuse, hypertension and host of cardiovascular

problems that lead to their problem in school, this can be the reason to have worse
academic performance. This crucial effect of academic performance may also affect

in the daily life of a every student, which can destabilize their future.

The mental health of students, especially in terms of academic pressure and

its effect, has become a serious issue among school and policymakers because of

the increasing incidence of suicides among students across the globe. The Lancet

Report (census 2011) states that parental pressure for better academic performance

is found to be mostly responsible for academic stress. Due to the constant pushing

of the student by the parents in order to perform better in both academics and extra-

curricular activities, some children develop deep-rooted nervous disorders during

their childhood.

Academic pressure is found to be positively correlated with parental

pressure and psychiatric problems. It is important to remember that the mental

constitution or coping capacities vary from one child to another. Therefore, children

with poor coping capacities become more prone to anxiety, depression and fear of

academic failure and this shows us that one should not compare one student with

another.

Academic pressure does not begin in college. The nervous breakdowns,

panic attacks, burnouts, and depression are also apparent in many younger students.

The same situation is not always stressful for all people, and all people do not

undergo the same feelings or off-putting thoughts when stressed, According to

Nancy Brown (2013).

Academic pressure is often seeing as being a negative interaction, but it can

also be a trait that is sometimes used for good. It can be positive in the way that it

can motivate us to do better on tests, assignment, projects and activity. It can also

push us to our fullest potential. It can encourage excellence. Sometimes students

who get pressured by their parents, friends, guardian or other people is the students

who get a high grade because they don’t see pressure as a bad thing instead, they

used it as a motivation to improve their academic performance.

It can enhance memory and learning, and improve decision-making skills

and creativity to do anything. Like us, it helps us to be independent and to give our

best in everything that lead us to accomplish our goals and allow us to be successful.

Remember not every event can have a negative effect on us, and it depends on our

perception of the event to determine how it will affect us.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The researchers tend to know the effects of academic pressure to the

academic performance of the Grade 10 students of Colegio de San Jose del Monte,

Inc.

Specifically, to answer the following questions such as:

1. What is the gender of the grade 10 students of Colegio de San Jose del Monte,

Inc.?

2. What are the effects of academic pressure to the academic performance of the

Grade 10 students of Colegio de San Jose del Monte, Inc.?

3. Is there a significant relationship between the gender of the Grade 10 student

and the effect of academic pressure in their academic performance?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study will be undertaken to know The Effects of Academic Pressure to

The Academic Performance of The Grade 10 Students of Colegio de San Jose del

Monte, Inc. The results could be beneficial to the following:

Students. They will know the effects of academic pressure and how to deal with it.

They will understand how dangerous academic pressure is.

Teachers. They will understand why a student’s behavior is not proper. They will

learn how to counsel students experiencing academic pressure.

Parents. Like the teachers, they will have deeper understanding why their child’s

behavior is bad. This study will help them formulate some preventive

measures to help their children from academic pressure if they are suffering

from this. They will know that they shouldn’t pressure their children to

study more than they can.

Future researchers. This can also be significant for the future researchers. This

study can be their guide to gather ideas and information. This research will

be their example on making their own research.

The researchers. This study will enhance their skill in engaging research and gain

more knowledge about academic pressure and its effects. They will have a

lot to learn in this study, including moral lessons.

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

The effects of academic pressure can either be good or bad. The effects may

be based in the intensity of the pressure or how strong the student’s mind is. Some

students can make a positive outcome from it but unfortunately, some don’t and

suffer from it.

According to Joeie Cuerpo (2017), academic pressure is a major factor to

how a child performs academically. A research done in 2000 on learning theories

states that stress can enhance learning ability, but too much of it can cause physical

and mental health problems and the academic achievement of a child is put to risk.

Students are faced with a tremendous amount of stress that comes from too much

homework, long tests, and performance tasks. The workload is not actually the

problem; rather it is the limited amount of time for these requirements. Another

study conducted in 2000 on the effects of stress on health habits, health status, and

self-esteem states that working hours and workloads are dominant sources of stress.

The academic stress that students are experiencing is probably part of the birth pains

of the students. It should be noted, however, that if a student is having difficulty in

coping with academic stress, then there might be serious repercussions such as

psycho-social and emotional health consequences.

According to Associated Press/MTV survey (2009), school is the most

frequently mentioned source of students ‘pressure from 13 to17 years old. A child

may be studying always but if not studying effectively, all the time spent with books
might actually be causing more stress. A high school is might be way of building

up a tolerance for pressure because of too much homework, testing, and pressure

from peers.

In the educational field, the common sources of academic pressure that may

lead to fear and anxiety among students are high expectations of parents, teachers,

or even friends, competition among classmates, physical set-up, limited

opportunities, and ambitions (Nakalema and Ssenyonga, 2013). Students in their

high school level are the ones who are going through the transitional phase which

is an intermediate of childhood and adulthood. Academic pressure relations take on

much more importance during adolescence. It was found that most teens go through

stress because of academic pressure.

Based on American International Journal of Research in Humanities, Arts

and Social Sciences (2014) by Krishan Lal, the modern world, which is said to be

a world of achievements, is also a world of stress. Students find stress everywhere,

whether it be within the family, business organization/enterprise or any other social

or economic activity. Stress is a subject which is hard to avoid. Everyone has had

it or has it in one point in their high school life. The students today are facing with

new challenges in education calling for greater effort from students. In addition,

there are heavy demands made by the society on students to perform various roles,

many of which are undefined, inconsistent and unachievable in the present socio-

cultural, economic and bureaucratic contexts of our society, causing heavy stress

on students mainly high school students. Unfortunately, stress is a common part of

life as we begin the new millennium, something few of us can avoid altogether.
According to Monziri et. Al (2012), some parents are at their children’s

back daily pushing them to excel academically. Nothing less than as would please

them. Parental pressures to pursue academic success have both positive and

negative effects on their children.

Parental pressure on children to pursue academic success may produce

children with imbalanced personal development. The children grow up to be

intellectual giants but dwarf socially, emotionally and physically. They spend their

working hours studying. They are not well-informed about happenings in the world.

They do not have time for fun and hobbies. As a result, they find it difficult to mix

with friends. The lack of interaction also results in poor social skills. The end result

is that children who have been pushed to succeed academically lives in a world of

his own.

In short, parental pressure on children to excel academically is helpful in

motivating them to study hard. Too much of it produces children who are either too

academically-oriented or those who relating to the business of running an

organization, or government. out of the race for academic success. Too much of a

good thing is bad. The same goes for parental pressure on children to achieve in

their studies.

According to Madison Pados (2019), by having a parent lay pressure on

them to succeed, a child can feel less inspired and more threatened. They’ll be so

paralyzed by fear of not doing well, that they won’t actually learn and succeed like

they otherwise would. Plus, if they have feelings of anxiety, they are less likely to

know what the culprit is. It is possible that they will place further blame for their
bad feelings on themselves for not being smart enough, therefore causing more

stress and anxiety. Too much pressure to do well in school can cause kids to do

unethical things. For instance, a child who has been told that they must get all A’s

on their report card could feel pressured to cheat on an exam or assignment in order

to fulfill that obligation. They might also turn to drugs and/or alcohol to deal with

the stress.

Figure 4. The comparison of the effects of Academic Pressure to Academic

Performance between Girls and Boys.

From this comparison in figure 5, it measures differences between two genders of

grade 10 students of Colegio de San Jose del Monte, inc. When it comes on effect

of academic pressure. It states that there are more boys who get a high stress level

in school works compare to girls; it also states that there are less girls who are not

poor in decision making and outcomes that can result a poor academic performance

in school. While there are more girls says that academic pressure encourages their

academic excellence. But when it comes in the measurement of grade 10 students

that enhance their memory and learning because of academic pressure, Boys and

girls have an equal measurement. We think that among the students who feel

academic pressure, there are a greater number of boys who are affected by academic

pressure negatively. On the contrary, there are more girls who are affected by

academic pressure positively.
